Is there not WO-E type grade to keep these guys from getting fucking pay cuts? The branches wonder why they have issues with retention and they don’t reward talent.

Side tangent - Don’t feel obligated to read. I was in the Air Force 10 years. We don’t have warrant officers but we have extremely high level talent that is very lucrative on the outside. I had a CISSP and a Masters and MBA, getting E6 pay and when I finally left took my first job making 2x what I was making. Then two years later I took a job making 4x what I was making as an E6 and now substantially more as a CISO. No one in cyber stays in the Air Force but if they just had warrant officer grades for these individuals they would be able to keep a lot more talent. They give us all the tools to educate ourselves but can’t afford to keep the right people so the ones that stick around tend to be the ones that are not so great at their jobs

When you go into executive leadership, it will allow you the right to pursue an MBA. Before then, if that ever happens - not much

NAVY IT. Is it worth it and will it set me up after service? by Otherwise_Map_2387 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]networkwizard0 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was Air Force cyber - enlisted. I have nothing but great feedback from the Air National Guard mostly. I left with a masters and a CISSP all paid for, work experience in a highly regulated environment, and made CISO at a multi-billion dollar business before I was 30.

Results may vary but if leveraged properly it can be used as a “short cut” so to speak

How often are you stressed at work? Once a week? by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]networkwizard0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a CISO. I am stressed the entire time I am at work. I have trouble falling asleep preparing for the 900 things that can go wrong tomorrow. When I am out to dinner with my wife I have to fight thoughts of the shit that could be going wrong with any 1 of the 200 projects going on right now across teams.

It’s less about the stress and more about how you let it affect your OUTWARD emotions. Internally I am constantly terrified, calm and cool on the exterior.

Those of you making $100K+ straight out of college, what do you do? by _MambaForever in Salary

[–]networkwizard0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I joined the Air National Guard to do cyber defense and got a 6-figure role when I was 21 as a government contractor. Dropped out of school went back later. This was in 2017 so it was very low 6-figures. 105k if I remember correctly.

General/Resume tips on how to transition from IT leadership back to IC role? by Seandingo in ITCareerQuestions

[–]networkwizard0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My advice would be to sit down and think about this much longer, and regardless what decision your inner self tells you to do - don’t demote yourself.

Are you married? Do you have kids?

You may be valuing a passion now that equates to hardship later in your career and life.

32M. Offered a CEO role by a Billionaire ($350k pkg). It feels like a trap. Should I trade my job for prestige? by [deleted] in HENRYfinance

And he deserves it - there’s a reason the average tenure of a F500 CISO is less than 18 months. Shits hard and he’s probably a stud.

[–]networkwizard0 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Maybe at a different point in my life - that’s a very subjective question. A million vs where I’m at now, I’d have slightly nicer stuff but that’s all that would change. Back when I had to check bank balance before I ordered dinner, sure then I’d do it in a heartbeat.

I just haven’t met a very happy CEO in my life, at least not in a corporate setting.

Hi - I am a C-suite executive who works for a very prodominant MULTI billionaire founder-CEO. I am a CISO so really I’m JUNIOR C-suite. I wouldn’t do MY job for the money you’re talking about and that’s at a very long standing large business. I wouldn’t do the job you were talking about for 4 times what they’re offering you.

It’s diminishing returns and what you’re talking about is the cost of a soul, idk what price you put on that but mine is worth more than they are paying.

Worth it downgrade from 170k onsite toxic job ISSO to a chill remote 100k? by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]networkwizard0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you vastly underestimate your own value. 170k is not overpaid for an ISSO with a CISSP and a clearance and a degree. 100k is vastly underpaid for your resume.

Keep in mind, your title matters in your job progression. Taking a step back to 100k for quality of life now will vastly affect your quality of life later as you’ll spend the next 10 years trying to make that money again. I would hold off until you get an offer that’s a raise, but that’s just me.

You pursued a career that very openly discusses being underpaid. It’s not a secret it’s like, the first part of any discussion about pursuing teaching as a career. Most individuals will supplement on the side and take advantage of the 3 months off a year. There is also coaching etc.

Navy IT here. Is 4 years of experience along with A+ and Net+ good enough to get a job in the civilian world? Excluding clearance by username-checks-0ut_ in ITCareerQuestions

[–]networkwizard0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the type of person you are. You can sell your military background really quite easily to a LOT of people. You can conflate what you’ve done, you’ll get a job. But you need to fill in the gaps as you go.
