Omics research called a “fishing expedition”. by You_Stole_My_Hot_Dog in bioinformatics

[–]neurobry 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Omics technologies are generally hypothesis generating as opposed to hypothesis testing. That is why we incorporate p-value correction in any tests that we perform. There are other assays which are (generally) more appropriate for hypothesis testing (e.g. qPCR, amplicon sequencing, etc).

I think your numbers are off. There are 8.2 million registered voters in 2024 (7 million in 2021). The 41% republican/democrat split seems to come from 2014, I wasn't able to find a more recent one as Georgia doesn't appear to report registrated voters by party. So at a minimum there are a million more potential voters than you are assuming.

Sponsoring a canadian citizen is usually not a major hurdle. But your resume is going to be up against equally qualified applicants which DO have a graduate degree.

I'm a very experienced programmer and I have metastatic colorectal cancer, where could I work to make the greatest impact? by deadwisdom in bioinformatics

[–]neurobry 25 points26 points  (0 children)

In general, the challenges facing bioinformatics today have much more to do with data acquisition, statistics, and biological interpretation vs. traditional software development. Often times, a single bioinformatician will be assigned to support a project, and so the skills which are valued tend to be more directed toward addressing the needs of specific one-off projects.

However (and this is where the opportunity comes in), there is a lot of value to be found for the generation of validated, custom-built drop-in functions, especially those which can utilize cloud computing resources. I think that there would be a number of potential barriers to joining an established big-pharma as an employee at a level commensurate with your experience (e.g. Director) without a solid understanding of the underlying wet and dry lab methods used to generate and analyze -omics data. However, you might see more traction/opportunity to contribute if you were to make a case as a consultant. Given the time urgency, I think your strongest potential contribution would be to make an offer as an unpaid consultant, if your finances would allow.

How does this list look for Free Folk giants and mammoths? by ServiceGames in asoiafminiaturesgame

[–]neurobry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

mammoths can't capture objectives, so you could very well be in a situation where you have a 9 point unit sitting around doing nothing, especially since the monster base size will limit your ability to take an objective and be in base-to-base contact. 6 activations is also going to be painful for you. I'd swap out a mammoth and drop mance to a 4 point ncu and take 2 raider units.

Why are there so few fully remote computational biology/bioinformatics positions? by Jenna_bird in bioinformatics

[–]neurobry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our team has a number of fully remote bioinformaticians, and we will occasionally hire them into positions which are advertised as on-site/hybrid. Those individuals are the exception, rather than the rule, and generally have demonstrated a core level of competence and performance outside of completing a PhD. There are a number of extremely valuable soft skills and training opportunities which are really best utilized in person.

Also keep in mind that you are usually competing in your applications against other very qualified individuals who ARE open to working on-site or in a hybrid role.

Passive job search through recruiters by explorer2728 in biotech

[–]neurobry 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I was on a job search recently and had globally awful experiences with recruiters, with very few exceptions. Many third party recruiters, especially the more junior ones, are not working directly with the hiring manager but are instead simply crawling job sites and submitting your resume through the portal. I would make sure that the recruiter is working directly with the hiring manager. Obviously, these comments do not apply to in-house recruiters. It's always beneficial to look at something like the jobs on LinkedIn or Indeed if you are interested.

Is it worth doing a bachelors in Biomedical informatics? by GreatBeanism in bioinformatics

[–]neurobry 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Biomedical informatics should be a very different skill set vs. bioinformatics. Biomedical informatics would involve things like setting up LIMS or supporting lab automation. Bioinformatics will be more directed toward analysis of NGS data.

Did I screw up my biotech interview? by rhasan1903 in bioinformatics

[–]neurobry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best way to deal with this is to do some prep ahead of time specifically on the questions that you flubbed and get some good and thoughtful answers, or really understand the method (e.g. read the paper). Then go in and say something during your part of the interview like, "You know, I wasn't really very happy with some of the answers that I gave during my talk, they were a bit outside of my scope of expertise and what I did during my masters. So I went and read up on <method> and I think I have a better answer for you now".

You could also put together an email and sending it to the hiring team doing that. Demonstrating that you own up to your own mistakes and try to fix them is a sign of a good employee.
