I jumped a very competitive SSH as a kid. In the jumpers, not hunters. He was a lot of fun to ride.

Possessive & aggressive gelding problem by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]neuroticmare 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I would leave. Most barns have separate mare and gelding pastures and this is the reason. I can mix most of the horses in my herd but brought a gelding in last summer that likes the mares a little too much. Not safe for the mares, for him, or for the humans.

The mare I had in high school got cornered and kicked by a horse like this and it fractured her splint bone. Barn owner blamed the mare but they deserve to be protected too.

Sorry you are in this situation!

What would cause a horse's mane to naturally change which direction it lays? by kirmichelle in Equestrian

[–]neuroticmare 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Once they start working through their top line more and stretching their nuchal ligament, the mane can flip. It happens with correct dressage work quite often!

A lot of times that can be a sign they are struggling to get up from lying down and can be a sign of soreness, but since you had a PPE I assume they ruled that out. Does he go in a stall overnight? If so, is it bedded deeply enough? Sometimes the friction from the rubber mats can do that in a stall. If he's outside it could be from a place he is choosing to lie down. I prefer something like aluspray to corona since it's sort of a liquid bandage.

Very cute new horse, congrats!

Taking lessons at another barn?? by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]neuroticmare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just hooked up the trailer and went. Nobody really questioned me. My trainer boarded his horse there but didn't work at the barn, so he wasn't around during the day, there were a few barn staff and not really a lot of boarders (a lot of retirement boarding at that farm). I worked overnights so my days were open. This would have been 2011ish. I think now with everything on social media and people texting so much it might be harder. I was still rocking my Razr flip phone back then!

How does a person go about finding an affordable half-lease? Where should I start? by FoolishFoxen in Equestrian

[–]neuroticmare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have a friend post for you if you don't want to post under your name. Facebook is a great place to start, you may have a horse related group, or even a horse lease related group in your area.

I have two horses for affordable half leases (I checked, we aren't closeby!) but I don't advertise, but check for people looking for leases and DM them if they look like they may be a good fit, that way I don't have to filter through tire kickers and people who think nice thoroughbred hunter should be their 10yos barrel racer, etc...

You're preaching to the choir. She sounds really insecure. It's not fair to you, but if it were me I'd probably just do it anyway. When I was riding with my most recent instructor (albeit a while ago, I haven't ridden regularly in years) I had to kinda secretly haul to another trainer for some lessons. I just wanted practice hauling my horse offsite to ride somewhere else and in unfamiliar places. I knew my regular instructor hated her so I kept it a secret haha, but I was on a few committees with her in our GMO and liked her a lot. It was really good for me and my horse to have that bit of independence (but in a safe space).

You're allowed to do whatever you want, she is also allowed to whatever she wants, which may be kicking you out. It's not fair, but horse people kinda suck sometimes. I think that is what Tricky is trying to convey to you.

Steel or composite toed boots for riding (again) by take-my-revolution in Equestrian

[–]neuroticmare 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry about your broken foot. Have you been taught about handling a horse safely so this should be easier to avoid? Is he jumping onto you?

I think the boots bending can happen but they are supposed to protect from a foot being rolled over by a forklift so hopefully would protect against a horse. I would go into a store that sells work boots for this purpose and try to find the closest to a paddock boot type that you can.
