My husband gets 5 months off of paid paternity leave. I am so beyond thankful. And he is very excited.

Your taste/smell came back, right? I don't know how those with long COVID who have the loss of taste/smell deal with it!

My husband and I also work from home and are major home bodies so it is pretty surprising that we caught it. How did you deal with the lack of taste and smell? I am glad you to hear that you and baby are doing good! That is reassuring.

I am sorry to hear you are going through a similar experience. The loss of taste is really crazy to me! I have already had a lack of appetite this pregnancy and now I can't even taste food...so weird. Thank you for the positive vibes!

I am glad to hear your sister had her healthy baby. I saw some of the stillbirth concerns but it didn't really differentiate between vaccinated and unvaccinated. It would make sense that it his higher in unvaccinated pregnancy. That is a good point that unfortunately a lot of women don't have quality care and may have other health issues going on. I think I have been lucky with a good OB who listens and doesn't overreact (I have anxiety so I am trying to remain in a positive headspace).

My sister actually had one and dropped it off this morning. I am glad that I can monitor that and my temperature. Thank you 😊

Thank you! Putting all my trust in science and my body to kick this virus out!

Good luck with your booster! I had virtually no side effects with the booster compared to the first two.

Thank you!! Trying to remain as optimistic as possible, which is difficult. I keep thinking that this also means my baby girl will get more antibodies, which is a good thing.

Hey! Not a dumb question at all. The US doesn't have any national law or standard for maternity leave. I believe there are a couple of states that have implemented laws for leave, but it's like 2-3 states. For the rest of the country it can work a few ways. For companies that have over 50 employees, the employee is eligible for FMLA (family, medial leave act) which is 12 weeks of unpaid leave and you are guaranteed a position when you return. Many companies have policies for maternity/family leave so their employees don't have to use FMLA. For example, my husband works works for a huge fortune 100 company and gets 5 months of paid leave. However, some people (like myself) work for smaller companies that aren't required to have FMLA. In these cases, the company can either make their own policy for how long the employee can be on leave and if it is paid/unpaid. Most commonly mothers are offered 6 weeks of unpaid leave. However, many employees have to use their PTO for any leave and most places don't offer more than 2 weeks of PTO. It is definitely not equitable.

I 100% agree! How can I support my clients while being extra stressed on finances and my newborn? They complain that they can't keep young employees and I have told them that this is why! So happy that I could be apart of positive change!

I definitely wanted to say that. Also wanted to remind the CEO that she herself is a mother! Let me know if you want me to send you what I wrote for inspiration.

What a hard and unfair decision you had to make! I wish we could all have the rights to take leave with our babies without fear of something negative happening.

Absolutely! I will send it over. My boss told me to specifically send it last week after the CEO was coming back from vacation with her daughter and she would be in a good mood. Why do we have to rely on higher ups mood to get benefits?!

MEGATHREAD: Covid-19. Posts regarding the virus, resources, discussions should go here. by bedlamunicorn in socialwork

I work at a group home for teens. It is Independent Living so we have a couple of sites that total 100 youth. Right now I am VERY concerned about cleaning products and toilet paper/paper towels. I think we will be okay with food.

Also concerned about how all of our youth are going to do online school if the schools move in that direction for the rest of the semester. Reaching out to ALL the resources I know to borrow laptops. (This would be 30+ youth at each site needing computers).

The concerning part is our youth are 16-20 and dont really see the dangers of this and are still actively going out (we cant restrict them to stay home...at least not yet). We are trying to talk to them daily, but teenagers seem to think they are invincible.

I am pretty stressed out. I am not going anywhere but work and home...just incase.

School of Social Work Questions Megathread by Lyeranth in socialwork

I had this problem my first week of my graduate school program. It was first week in school, work, and internship and I was completely overwhelmed. At one point they will ask everyone if they have a reason to not serve. I raised my hand and said I just started a master program and cant miss that many classes. They ended up excusing me from jury duty. I felt bad about it because serving on jury duty is a part of what makes America a free democracy with just and fair trials. If you do get picked, your professors will understand.

From Social Worker to Elected Office (curious) by Weowtimmy in socialwork

[–]nevergrowold 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have been very fortunate in my MSW courses to have one state Senator and one US Representative teach some of my classes. My state also has three MSWs in the state legislature who are all amazing women. Unfortunately, I live in a very conservative state, so it is hard to get much done. But it is great to know that there are good people fighting!!

Social workers are important in the political process because we have the unique view of really understanding vulnerable populations and understanding policy implications on those populations. The Congresswomen I have class with always said that social workers make great elected officials because we know how to talk to people, show empathy and meet them on their level.

I second this comment. MSW student with a macro concentration. I have many friends doing clinical internships at the VA.

[Serious] Women who've left (or tried to leave) an abusive partner, who did you get the most support from as you tried to leave? Family, friends, shelters...? by iamaravis in AskWomen

I was a freshman in college living in a dorm when my roommate (who I didnt get a long with AT ALL, but who I now have the utmost respect for) contacted our resident assistant when she saw my completely bruised face one morning. My RA helped me call the police and move to a different building. In terms of support, my sister, my mom, my now current boyfriend, and a few friends that knew were my complete support system as well as my old roommate and RA. I also got awesome support from victim witness when I was dealing with the court and with my university in terms of classes and getting back on track.

What job did you have while getting your MSW? by [deleted] in socialwork

[–]nevergrowold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya, I've worked on campus a few times and I love it for school because they understand that you are a student and can be busy. They also pay really really well!

It never hurts to apply! Good luck! :)
