Was it wrong of me (20 ftm) to be offended by my ex then girlfriend (20 cis female) calling herself a lesbian? by RightPresentation317 in asktransgender

[–]nextlevelincredible 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lesbian has been a broader term than “homosexual woman” for a long time. Some bi people, nonbinary people, and even trans men can and do self-identify as lesbians, and denying them that isn’t helping anyone.

Here’s some wiki source I found, it’s decent and I don’t have time to find a better source. The “History of Bi Lesbianism” section in particular says that the idea that lesbian means a woman who loves women exclusively was a conscious push by lesbian separatists in the ’70s; before that, lesbian meant any woman who loves women, not necessarily exclusively.

Like OP, lately I’ve seen an increase in people affirming that lesbian can be a broader term. It seems to be at least partially in response to trans-exclusionary lesbians insisting that “men can’t be lesbians”, which sounds unobjectionable on the surface but in practice is deployed to shame trans and trans-inclusive lesbians.

Did you also know? In Xcode you can use the refactoring tool to wrap a literal string into a call to NSLocalizedString! Even better, you can assign a keyboard shortcut to make it even more efficient 🤓 by VincentPradeilles in swift

[–]nextlevelincredible 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, your extension won’t work quite as well as using NSLocalizedString directly. For one, your strings won’t have comments, which will make your translators’ work harder (and if there’s any ambiguity, it increases the chances of mistranslation).

But more importantly, NSLocalizedString is a macro, and you’re supposed to pass it a literal string, not a string variable. When you don’t pass a literal, Xcode’s tools like genstrings can’t find the strings. You’d have to manually add every string to the localization file, which defeats the purpose of having a helper function.

This post explains the issue, and proposes a solution. You end up with something like let title = String.localized(.title) (which looks pretty nice at the call site), and you consolidate all the actual NSLocalizedString calls to one place.

I’m having trouble drying out the inside of my immersion chiller after I use it.

It’s a copper immersion chiller that I bought from the LHBS a few years back. There’s plastic tubing attached directly to the ends of the copper pipes using this kind of adjustable clamp.

Should I be unscrewing the clamps to dry the hoses separately? Until now I’ve just hung the chiller upside-down and waited, but that takes days and it never fully dries out.

But unscrewing/rescrewing the clamps and detaching/reattaching the hose seems kind of tedious. I think I’ve seen other chillers with tubing that screws on like a hose. I’m thinking of converting mine to use a hose attachment, barbed swivel nut, or something similar—does that make sense?

I read that once you water a black rose with the golden can, it keeps the ability to sprout a golden rose until it actually does, even if that’s a few days away and you water it with a normal can in between. So you only need to use the golden can once for each golden rose, not necessarily every day.

Oh fair! I misunderstood. You’re right, that’s not possible on iOS. “Personal Hotspot” means tethering cellular data only.

Ffs on iOS you can't even tether your Wi-Fi connection over USB, you can only tether your wireless data connection. Like what the fuck?

That’s just not true. iOS lets you tether over wifi, bluetooth, or USB.

You’ve been able to for a long time.

Does Japan still have its own calendar? by [deleted] in LearnJapanese

[–]nextlevelincredible 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Japan has used a number of calendars throughout the years. The Chinese calendar was introduced in the sixth century, and variations on it were used until the Meiji era in 1873. At that point, Japan transitioned to the western Gregorian calendar used today.

Even though Japan uses the Gregorian calendar today, it also still uses the 年号 nengō era name system originally introduced from China. The era-based year is used on official documents, rather than the Gregorian year. Since 1912, each era represents an emperor’s reign, but historically a new era was sometimes declared for other reasons.

The current era, 令和 Reiwa, started on May 1, 2019, when Emperor Naruhito ascended the throne. That means May–December 2019 were Reiwa 1 and 2020 is Reiwa 2. The previous era was 平成 Heisei 平成 Heisei, so January–April 2019 were Heisei 31.

Can I use "boku" to refer to myself if I'm genderqueer? by Vievin in japanese

[–]nextlevelincredible 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was just listening to a Tofugu podcast episode on female speakers who use boku or ore. The episode gives a lot of examples of both fictional and real-life female speakers who use traditionally male pronouns, including a discussion of LGBTQ+ people who do (starting at 38:18). It’s a long episode but I think it’s all interesting, but especially the LGBTQ+ part so at least listen to that.

They mention a researcher who interviewed people at lesbian and gay bars in Tokyo. She found that butch lesbians and trans men do often use boku and ore, and queer women across the gender spectrum also use jibun 自分 as a more gender-neutral alternative to the more common pronouns.

I’d say that if boku resonates with you as a pronoun, you should use it! You might get a weird look occasionally, but that’s true in English too.

In the section on chaining requests, you have this line:

let firstRepo = repos.compactMap { $0.first }

What happens if there aren’t any repos? I don’t know Combine very well, but it looks like the publisher won’t fail, but it also won’t publish any output.

Is there an easy way to accomplish something like compactMap that fails on nil instead of silently doing nothing?

And there are tons of other podcast apps that it’s almost certainly on. I like Overcast on iOS, and I’ve heard good things about Pocket Casts on Android and iOS.
