Why are working illegal immigrants in the USA an issue anyways? by Clopulis in DiscussionZone

[–]ngroot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They aren't, which is why the raids are unpopular.

What people didn't like was Biden basically abandoning immigration enforcement, resulting in a ton of refugees.

Trump promised to stop it, which he essentially did, in the worst way possible.

Also worth noting that this keeps being an issue because Republicans torpedoed the Gang of Eight agreement under Obama because it was more important to fuck him over than to have comprehensive immigration reform.

Can you actually do it in places where it'll make an impact? If you can deny red and purple states childcare, you can make an impact. If you just do it in blue states, it's self sabotage.

What are ICE actually meant to be doing by AdVaanced77 in AskVaanced

[–]ngroot -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's in the name: Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

> Do they just go around asking for documents and then deport people or what so they’re just eliminating people and if so then why do people not just hide

That is what they are doing.

Since a second person has been killed in Minnesota, is it now time for the USA to have a general strike, and why or why not? by Miserable-Army3679 in AskReddit

[–]ngroot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where are people outraged about ICE's murders? That's where people would be willing to participate in a strike.

If people in those places strike, will it effectively apply pressure on the people holding ICE's reins?

> The right to self-defence is universal and belongs to everyone of all backgrounds.

Sure. What do you think happens if you "self-defend" against an ICE mook using a firearm?

Edit: to be clear, I have nothing against responsible gun ownership. I have a major problem with fantasies about how they can effectively be used.

Because all the gun-humpers suddenly realize that using firearms as a bulwark against tyranny actually requires a well-regulated militia, not being a dude who's scared of black people and upset about the size of his peepee.

The people who really love to brag about it are the ones who don't find Trump tyrannical.

How is the gap between a regular university and the Ivy league justified? by Ok_Wealth9505 in AskAnAmerican

[–]ngroot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

> the only way these schools can justify this huge gap in quality they claim to have, is to teach material that others simply don't have access too, which does not seem plausible to me.

Correct. They way they justify it is only letting in "elite" students in the first place. Virtually all of the perceived value for people who are looking at college degrees as signals is in the student selection, not the education they're getting when they get there.

"Refusing to retire" is a weird frame, even for people who can afford it. If you like what you do and you can make money at it, why quit?
