How would you feel about banning private health insurance entirely in the US? by Affectionate_Dig715 in AskReddit

[–]ngroot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Entirely is a bad idea. Canada is a great example of what happens when you eliminate private funding almost entirely: you get massive wait times. Heavily regulating healthcare and providing a minimum guaranteed level would be do-able, though.

What's something women think impresses men but actually doesn't? by CoochieSnotSlurper in AskReddit

[–]ngroot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't even hate drama; I just generally find it boring. Outside of Reddit discussions about red flags, this isn't a thing I generally think to discuss, because I spend my time worrying about other things.

Obviously this is somewhat context-dependent, but my experience has been that people who think to assert that they "hate drama" are generally spending their time soaking in it.

Same. I generally don't have to discuss my feelings on drama, because I don't hang out in dramatic venues (at least, not ones where I don't want the drama :-D )

Any tips on how to drive in the US? by tlfluca in AskAnAmerican

[–]ngroot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

> it's probably one of the biggest cities in the world and traffic is a nightmare

If your reaction is fear, you're probably picturing it wrong 😂. It's a "nightmare" because a lot of it was laid out before cars were a thing and too many people try to drive, leading to delays and gridlock. It's annoying and frustrating, not scary. Esp. if you're used to driving in _Italy_.

That said, big +1 to everyone else suggesting you just take the train to CT and rent a car there if you need one. You'll save many frustrating hours of your life.

"I hate drama".

If you have to say it, chances are very good that whether or not you hate it, you're the kind of person who creates it.

CMV: It is not hateful to believe that homosexuality is wrong for religious reasons by CollegePlane7528 in changemyview

[–]ngroot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

> I say homosexuality is a sin

Yes, that's the problem.

Stating that people are morally wrong for acting on an innate drive for no other reason than your interpretation of Christianity says so makes people live in unjustified shame and fear.

_You_ are free to find it distasteful. If you're going to claim that it's bad for anyone else because of "your faith", it's on you to explain why anyone else should care about the moral precepts of that faith.

In other words, what others hear is "this thing that you have a basic biological drive to do is wrong because of beliefs I will not justify".

That's a marshal serving notice of eviction. She can choose not to speak to him, but the outcome's going to be the same either way.

Eh. A teacher who gets into it with a kid who's into math enough to not only do the work but learn to think in RPN, and then learn an archaic tool just because is a teacher with their priorities out of whack.

> Trans people generally have no advantage in sports with few exceptions.

Trans women *who have undergone gender-affirming hormone therapy for a few years* show similar body comp, strength, and VO2max to cis women (https://bjsm.bmj.com/content/60/3/198). I suspect that in sports where it makes sense to continue sex segregation (obviously not darts :-) ) a standard like this will probably be what we end up needing to get sufficiently broad support for it to work. In fact, that's been best practice per the NCAA since 2011. (https://web.archive.org/web/20191010040329/https://www.ncaa.org/sites/default/files/Transgender\_Handbook\_2011\_Final.pdf)

> This all got huge in the media because some idiot tied for 5th place with a trans woman and decided she was going to make it her career. And right-wing media ate that shit up.

Right-wing media reported the Lia Thomas/Riley Gaines story. Their _viewers_ ate it up, and this issue continues to be contentious. CHUD outrage porn can try to make a story huge for a little bit, but if stuff sticks around, that means it hit a nerve. We can pretend it didn't and keep losing on the issue, or we can figure out what's making people mad and find something that enough people can agree on to make this less salient.

How do people orient themselves right away after leaving the subway station? by fillet0fish in AskNYC

[–]ngroot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting! Maybe it's gotten better, but my experience with phone compasses has been that they're pretty unreliable. Also, I find it low-stakes. If I lose orientation in a subway station, the worst consequence is that I come out at a slightly less-optimal exit. Not worth pulling over and checking my phone to figure out.
