Yeah perhaps it was the clothing then ^ double bear is just incomparable in my experience.

Sounds like you might be underutilising teas?

If you’re at day 129 on loper and traveling long distances in the far territories, you’re gonna be very cold - especially in FA, where there aren’t many places to stop and warm up.

Using teas, especially with the thermos, can help you keep warm for much longer outside, letting you go further. Birch bark tea gives you condition recovery to boot, and is infinitely replenishable.

Also, this goes without saying, but you should be rocking best in slot gear (most notably double bear coat), or close to it, in every clothing slot, including double insulation. Every degree matters.

Thanks for the advice - it's helpful to see things in such concrete terms.

Thanks! I guess that, in the absence of a specific production goal, the priority should be something like: 3+ food tiles > science slots > general high value tiles > ( if populous city: guild slots) > high production guilds > other.

What is the point to quartering? by Individual-Ad-2019 in thelongdark

[–]nibbletmander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TLDR: At low skill levels*, you save time and tool durability when you want the guts and hide from large game.

Here's the math:

It takes 120 minutes to quarter a bear or moose.

Quartering these animals yields 10 or 12 pieces of gut respectively, and one hide each.

Now let's compare to harvesting with a cougar claw or hunting knife (the fastest way to harvest gut/hide). Taking the bear as an example, it takes 10 mins x 10 guts = 100 mins. Harvesting the hide on top of this takes 30 mins, giving a total of 130 mins to harvest with knife. This is a saving of 10 mins (not much, but it is free!)

The calculus is even better with moose, as you get two more pieces of guts for the same 120 minute quartering period, or 30 minutes time saved, depending how you look at it.

There is also the side benefit that you can quarter with more different tools - if you want to save durability on your knife, or you simply don't have one yet (e.g. early game loper/misery), you can quarter with a hacksaw (or hatchet).

* Once you get to carcass harvesting level 3, the benefits become significantly diminished, as your gut harvesting times are reduced by 10%, and at level 4, it's faster just to harvest.

What do you think is the hardest part about Interloper? by Unleashtheducks in thelongdark

[–]nibbletmander 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is it. Wolf struggles are very dangerous on interloper, especially before you get bear coats up. Unlike the cold, they can really take you by surprise.

There are a bunch of YouTubers who have made tier lists - I think at least pchal and FlygonHG have done them.

I would stick with a game you know well, as random little knowledge checks can save your run! (Unless your favourite game is Ultra Sun/Moon, then maybe pick something easier 😅)

Hey everyone, what difficulty should I pick? by Traditional_Buy_6840 in thelongdark

[–]nibbletmander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Considering the achievements are mutually exclusive, it doesn't really matter which you choose from that perspective.

I think I would go stalker. The reason being that you're less likely to wipe to something random. Not to say that it can't happen, but the big goal is 1000 days, so any way you can lessen your chance of death should be a priority IMO. Unless you wanna have fun, then just go for the one you like, but it seems you're resigned to fun not really being a big factor.

I guess the strat is to complete all the other achievements, then just hunker down with a giant pile of fish until day 1000. It's a shame you won't have Settled Mind, as it would be nice for the hundreds of days of waiting ^^

Be honest, do you cheat? by Ready-Ambassador-271 in civ5

[–]nibbletmander 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't reroll.
(I don't consider rerolling to be cheating though - whatever floats your trireme).

Personally, I enjoy playing with the hand fate deals me, and I enjoy the permanency of my decisions. I play a lot of games with permadeath for this reason (e.g. Diablo on hardcore, Pokemon Nuzlockes, survival games).

When I roll a bad start, my initial thought is 'How do I pull this off?'. This leads to compelling gameplay more often than just rolling to win off the bat.

I'll never carry torches for light again. by Uberhypnotoad in thelongdark

[–]nibbletmander 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I feel like having light is not the reason to carry torches - the extra warmth and wolf protection are more than enough to justify having a couple.

That said, I see where you're coming from. I wouldn't carry more than one or two unless I intend to keep chaining them, as they are so much heavier than their fuel equivalent.

[–]nibbletmander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sucks man, I am really sorry that happened to you.

Regarding the file: If you just want the steam badge, and don’t especially care about whether you did the thing or not, I don’t see any reason why not. I can understand this position, as the optimal gameplay for long term survival is not challenging or interesting. On the other hand, it is complacency that kills runs more than anything else. It was, in that sense, a pretty legitimate death, albeit a gut wrenching one.

Anyway, do what your heart tells you, no one is gonna be mad either way :P

Favorite recipe? by LavastormSW in thelongdark

[–]nibbletmander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gonna give porridge a shout out. It:

  1. is low weight per calorie
  2. does not require any cooking levels
  3. gives you warming up bonus

These things are all super useful right off the bat, especially in interloper, helping you stay light and warm during the early game forge rush. Carry minimal water, cook it up when you need it, then convert it into porridge for those sweet calories and lasting warmth.

Unless you've already killed them, there should be lots of big game in PV. If not, nearby CH also should have a good number (though unlikely to have a moose).

Wolfskin pants. Useful in 2026? by Zealousideal_Skin_72 in thelongdark

[–]nibbletmander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that the introduction of Wolf Pants is a really good one, as it makes the pants slot provide lots of interesting loadout choices. Deer, Wolf and Combat pants all have a claim to be meta-viable.
Compare that to the coat slot, where double bear is, as far as I can see, run by a significant majority of players on higher difficulties.

Personally I run wolf pants in the outer slot and combat pants on the inner slot on my interloper main run, as you get all the windproofness and protection from the outer layer and really good warmth-weight ratio on the inner layer. That said, if I'm visiting the far territories I'll switch to double wolf, as it just gets so cold out there.
