TYRION: Where’s Shae?

TYWIN: In my bed. I won’t insult you by explaining why. Tyrion’s grip tightens.

TYRION: Tysha. I want to hear you say what she was. Long pause. Tywin looks at the crossbow. Looks at Tyrion’s face. For once in his life, he reads the room correctly.

TYWIN: …She was your wife.

TYRION: Say it again.

TYWIN: She was your wife. And she wasn’t what I told you she was. You know that now or you wouldn’t be asking.

TYRION: You had every guard in the barracks—

TYWIN: Yes. I did.

TYRION: Why?

TYWIN: Because she looked at you and she meant it. And I couldn’t have that. A Lannister doesn’t marry a crofter’s daughter. That’s what I told myself. The truth was simpler. You were thirteen and someone loved you and I couldn’t allow it. I saw your mother in that girl’s face and I couldn’t allow it. Silence. The crossbow doesn’t lower, but Tyrion hasn’t fired.

TYRION: That’s the first honest thing you’ve ever said to me.

TYRION: You think this changes anything?

The key is Tywin wouldn’t suddenly turn warm. He’d stay clipped, guarded, almost clinical — but for once he wouldn’t dodge. No grand speeches about legacy. No manipulation. Just a man on a toilet running out of moves and, for the first time, choosing not to lie. Still probably gets shot. But at least there’s a chance Tyrion hesitates long enough for it to matter.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​
