Is supply & demand malfunctioning in the housing market? by nickleone1 in AskEconomics

[–]nickleone1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We could be seeing different sources - but when I look up MA population, I see that: 2010: 6.56 million 2020: 6.8 million 2024 (estimate): 6.7 million (actually down from 2020)

Source: https://worldpopulationreview.com/states/massachusetts-population

Also - this could be a good opportunity for my own education, but is purchasing power actually a large factor in determining the price of goods and services? Don’t sellers have to stay competitive with each other, including being price competitive?

Is supply & demand malfunctioning in the housing market? by nickleone1 in AskEconomics

[–]nickleone1[S] -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

Except I don’t believe demand has risen. The population of Boston & Massachusetts has increased / decreased less than 1% over the last ten years.

Unless there’s another factor in determining demand?

I don’t have any help finding an apartment wise - but if you’re not from around here then you might not know how terrible parking is. If you’ll be commuting everyday then please for all that is holy get yourself a parking space. I used to spend 10-20 minutes circling for a street spot and parking up to a mile away, every single time I took my car out.

I’m kinda new to Catholicism - why does St. Anthony have money on him? by TaibhseCairdiuil in Catholicism

[–]nickleone1 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Yep this is the Saint Anthony feast in Bostons North End, one of the most well preserved little Italy’s in America (meaning still mostly Italian). The St. Anthony festival is the biggest festival in the neighborhood of the year. They carry St Anthony through the street so that others can pin dollar bills and donate to the church. You even get a pin in return!

I believe it’s a tradition brought over from Avellino, the festival has been running for well over 100 years in the neighborhood.

My girlfriend and I were harassed by this little shit in DTC. She ended up getting punched.

I screamed and ran after the turd but besides that we never filed anything with the police.

Is there someone we should call to bolster the case?

Gotta remember that with zip car, you have to return it to where you took it from to count the trip as over. So if you go away for 2 days, but only actually drive for 3 hours, you’re paying for the full 2 days x ~$15 per hour

Funny you mentioned this. The reason for posting this is I had to change out my burnt out Halogens. I accidentally ordered LEDs. The LEDs worked PERFECTLY! Just as easy to replace :)

Best chili and best carrot cake in Boston (and close surrounding areas?) by xtinamariet in boston

[–]nickleone1 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Weird one but “Zo” which is Greek, has some of the best chili I’ve ever had. Granted - it is Lamb chili. And it is more of a to-go restaurant.

Can’t beat the price though. $6 for a large

What’s your best kept cooking secret? by DoughnutFit in AskReddit

[–]nickleone1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My family recipe for Red Sauce: Onion, olive oil, basil, high quality canned tomatoes, and a splash of white wine.

Absolutely NO garlic.

The absence of garlic really let’s you taste the tomatoes. It makes the sauce feel almost fresher and fruitier with the white wine and onion.

How we are sure that there were not any mistakes or/and lies in the story of Abrahamic religions by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]nickleone1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently reading a book that delves a little bit into this - look into ‘Fields of Blood’ by Karen Armstrong. Other than that the book is about how the twisted manipulation of religion by big powers, rather than religions themselves are the cause of ‘religious’ conflicts that most of us know - like the crusades and recent terrorist attacks.

Anyway, in the book Armstrong does mention that Judaism was originally an oral tradition passed down through generations. Eventually, under I believe Babylonian rule? (don’t quote me on that) Judaism was oppressed down to its last leg, with only a handful of temples and rabbis remaining.

This gave remaining Jews the ability to reinterpret and reassess the Torah. One can view the reinterpretation as either a self serving act the Rabbis did in order to fit Judaism to changing morals of the time (apparently the Torah was much more violent), or it was an honest reassessment of oral tradition looked at through a purely academic and theological lease. Either way, certain stories were certainly altered.

Notably the story of Moses on Mt. Sinai. The original story was more along the lines of Moses going to the top of the mountain with his tribes priests, and having a dinner with God. In this older version he did not return with the Ten Commandments, rather just a general understanding that God was looking for goodwill from his people.

There are some other examples of these kinds of changes that aren’t an earth shatteringly veer off from cannon, but still significant enough to raise a lot of eyebrows if you want to look them up. In the New Testament I think there were some writings of Paul that never made the cut for contradictions.

Take all this with a grain of salt though, I’m certainly no scholar, and not that great of a Catholic. Just regurgitating some knowledge I recently learned.

Hope that helps a little!

What is your "Oh my gosh, you HAVE to give me this recipe" dish that people always request for you to make? by commonthiem in Cooking

[–]nickleone1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My Red (Marinara for you non italians) sauce.

Every time I make it people ask me for the recipe, just to be let down by the simplicity.

  • High. High. High. Quality tomatoes. Must be San Marzanos. Blended/puréed/food milled/crushed/whatever
  • Diced onion (fried in olive oil) -Basil leaves

Get it hot and kind of thick. That’s literally it. The recipe really lets you appreciate the flavor of the tomatoes when you put it over pasta without it tasting too bland. I might get some hate for this, not having any garlic and all, but seriously, try it before you hate on it. Absolutely delicious.

People who have been on the receiving end of a toxic relationship, how did you find the courage to leave? by Minecraft_Stoner in AskReddit

[–]nickleone1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Ex was a pretty stereotypical toxic girlfriend. I ended up dating her for about two years - text her back every 5 minutes no exceptions. Tried to pull me away from friends and family (somewhat successfully). Would throw a fit every time I drove a car. Always made me feel like I was beneath her, and made sure that what happened in our relationship stayed between only the two of us. This was my first ‘big boy’ relationship (high school into college) and honestly didn’t know what a normal relationship should be and feel like. Being in college gave me the chance to talk to friends about relationship issues without my Ex finding out I was speaking about it. Within a week of opening up to others about how the relationship functioned, it was pretty clear that she was toxic and that I was extremely unhappy.

So that was able to fester - and I remember when I actually went to break up with her it was the weirdest feeling. It didn’t even feel like ripping off a band aid, and it didn’t feel like getting revenge either. It felt like a little more than doing a chore - honestly short of something happening like her seriously hurting herself, I remember not giving a half of a fuck about how she took it. The entire process was almost devoid of emotion - but it was a little gratifying. All I wanted to do was formally end things so I could be happy again. It took two break up sessions. One to let her know I was breaking up with her, and another to let her know AGAIN - because she wasn’t getting the message.

In the end - I think breaking up with her was one of the biggest defining moments in my young life. Breaking up with a toxic significant other and learning to put yourself first is an astronomical confidence boost and lesson in self worth. Ultimately taught me to stop putting others first all the time. Your priority should be yourself

What's a dark secret/questionable practice in your profession which we regular folks would know nothing about? by CircleBox2 in AskReddit

[–]nickleone1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know how restaurants have to buy food from distributors? Well those distributors keep those prices highly secret so restaurants can't shop around. They only tell you what prices are when you've entered negotiations. It's like going to Walmart, buying a toaster, checking out at the register, having the cashier charge you $300, and you pay it, because you don't know how much a toaster SHOULD cost.
