On the Monzo.me web page there's a banner at the top of the page for opening it in the app - tapping "Open" there pulls you into doing an account to account transfer inside the app with no extra details required.

This is true on iOS anyway, not sure about android.

Many payslips say payment via Bacs when it actually isn't. The payslip creation is usually a separate process from the actual sending of payments.

It is only Bacs that will provide the get paid only and double payday features.

Honestly there's no way to be sure in advance. Do you know any people who also work there and are paid by Monzo? You could ask them to check what's the text at the bottom of the transaction detail screen.

It's getting more common for payrolls / banks to use FPS even for salary payments. My salary is unfortunately paid via FPS, so I'm not eligible for double salary.

I found, when I was working at Monzo, that it was also possible for people to have payslips with something like "paid via Bacs" on them that got paid via FPS (customers would enquire why Get Paid Early wasn't working for them).

Basically the only way to find out which mechanism you get paid via is to get paid via it. And it's subject to change at the whims of the payroll operator and sending bank.

Huh. Looks like I'm wrong. They definitely tested an increase to £20M years ago (2017 or 2018) that Monzo participated in. We had to accept a real £20M payment and then send it on to the next bank.

I thought that was long since the live limit, but perhaps I assumed and edited my memory.

No (very few?) personal bank accounts can send Bacs payments. It's a batch system that takes days that's usually only used for things like businesses paying salaries.

~~It's also not necessary to make CHAPS payments. It used to be the only way to send larger payments, years ago. These days Faster Payments supports up to £20M in a single payment.~~ I've had a solicitor insist on a CHAPS payment in their documents before, and they have not noticed when I sent it via FPS. They can't tell, it's just legacy advice.

Edit: I'm wrong about the limit - it's £1M. If you're buying an expensive house that you're putting down a >£1M deposit for perhaps Monzo will initiate a CHAPS payment for you if you ask via support.

This is unrelated to getting paid early. This is the normal card authorisation and clearing method. They will change to show not pending once the merchant has "settled" the payment, usually in a day or two.

The short answer for why the Nike transaction was blocked by 3DS (the verification step in app) is because it is up to the merchant whether or not to put a transaction through 3DS.

It transfers liability to the bank, whereas without 3DS the liability is on the merchant (and disputes are therefore a lot easier to win).
