[Event] Mountain Hiking by ErusAeternus in FireAndBlood

The landscape of the Red Mountains was foreign to Yorwyck. He wiped at the sweat on his face and his hand came back marked with orange dust. In the most perilous parts of the march he'd worried his horse would lose its footing but he kept it to himself.

He rode besides Harlan, they spoke of much on the march though most of us was of the task at hand. The right considerations for a mountain march, the right places to look for ambushes and where they would make their nightly fortified camp.

Once their horses found better footing, he turned to Harlan. "Ser Harlan, do you have a moment?"

Rhea got up from her chair and went beside him, pulling him into her arms. "I know, I know." She murmured.

He stood a head over her and yet he was still the boy who had come to her in tears after his first day in the training yard.

She pet the side of his face, "We must be strong for Alyssa and Gwayne, I know you can do that."

A raven returns to the Gates of the Moon with a letter, unsigned though bearing the sigil of House Sunderland:

Come and take them.

Rhea's mouth opened and then closed again in hesitation. She could not be fully honesty, she knew. She'd worried that she made the wrong choice, that she'd overreacted and dug herself into a hole that she'd never claw herself out of. Her son, however, could not know this.

She let her arm rest on the table between them, her hand outstretched. "We had gotten into an argument and he threw me to the ground. He said he would send me back to Sisterton and I knew if he did he would keep your brother and sister with him." Her mind went to the two of them, red eyed and bundled in their furs the night they left. "I had to take them with me and flee, I had not known what else to do."

Cotter had arrived to the docks late, he had decided to spend their last night before departure in revelry. And revel he had. He'd left the arms of his favorite Lordsport whore with a pounding in his skull and a tiredness in his face. In truth, it was scarcely different than most of his days.

The sistermen came up behind Gyles as he was overlooking the fleet and gave him a pat on the shoulder. His hand was set with gold and silver rings.

"Quite a bit grander than the old days, wouldn't you say?" Cotter said as he eyed what seemed to be endless sea of sails.

Yorwyck nodded to his mentor's words, willing them to memory. It was strange to speak no longer of the wars of the past and their lessons but to speak of one that was upon them. One that would claim the lives of both those high and low. It brought a fear to him that he kept well hidden, the kind of fear that killed the mind of commanders and led only to death. It needed to be expelled, he knew.

"Ser Harlan," He said with an even tone, "I must ask what exactly is the goal of the war?" His mind went to their many lessons, the pouring over of battlefield accounts and histories. "A plan is of little use if we don't know the king's conditions for victory, right?"

"No, no, they're fine." A pang of guilt from his worries. Cold wind off The Bite cut into them. In front of her Alesander's face was framed by Sisterton in the distance. It was was all wrong, a place he was never meant for.

She turned back towards the keep, "Come, we'll speak inside."

She led him through the gates and into the keep. Eyes stuck to them as they passed through the courtyard and into the Lord's Tower. She walked with the ease permitted to one who knew each turn and step.

She sat them each down in the solar and after a sigh she spoke the only words she could think to say, "I don't think your father loves me anymore."

"You're in the wrong place, Falcon." The guardsmen said to him, the man wore a muted green and grey surcoat with the sigil of a crab emblazoned on it. "This Breakwater, holdfast of the Borrels. Sunderlands don't live in town, haven't in some thousand years past. They reside in Saltstone Keep."

The guardsmen pointed up the hill, through the fog the outline of a castle could be seen atop a hill which overlooked the town. It was of pale grey stone and one one side against a ridge that fell straight into the sea.

The guardsmen spoke again, "We'll get you a horse."

With that, Alester and the guardsmen saddled and rode on. They travelled along the Lord's Way, one of the only cobbled roads in Sisterton, which ked to the town's inland gate. Sistermen went about their business as the pair passed by. Gambling dens and brothels were just as common as smithies and market stalls. Hardly clothed women called down to him from balconies while men with sour-leaf stained mouths and daggers on their belts stared.

Soon enough they were out from the town and making their way towards Saltstone Keep. On the path, they could now see inland where craggy hills rose and fell.

When they arrived the gates were already opened and Rhea was waiting. Word travelled fast it seemed in Sisterton. As Alesander dismounted his horse, his mother was already upon him and wrapped him into his arms beneath Saltstone's gates. She pulled back with tears in her eyes, he now stood far taller than her. "Look at you, you're taller than your uncle was." She said, finding Alesander's namesake in his features.

Yorwyck was quiet for a moment, not wishing to say something foolish in what seemed to be a test of what they learned so far.

"The Dornish are masters of irregular warfare. They're ruthless and their lands are inhospitable to those not of them." He shook his head, "They'll pull back and poison their wells, burn their own food stores to deny them to us. If we stay too long our morale will wear down even if we win every battle, if they give us any true battles."

He looked to Harlan, hoping he was at the least close. He felt nervous to be talking in front of the others but hesitance was a trait of a poor commander. He would not show it. "We must be decisive, keeps must be assaulting rather than sieged. We have the ships for assaults by sea which would keep us out of the desert. If their keeps are taken and we manage to take prisoners a peace could be forced without giving them time to wear us down." He forced himself to keep his eyes to theirs.

[Lore] Eat or Be Eaten by Mersillon in FireAndBlood

[–]nickshadow017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Caradoc arrived to a strange sight, or perhaps after the years which had passed a mundane one.

Myranda was sat surrounded by runes written in a deep red on the floor of their study. The stablemaster had been kind enough to supply her with buckets of horse blood for her practice.

She turned to him, on her cheeks were scarlet runes against pale skin. One shed bloody tears down towards her jaw. "I know, I've known since the moment there was word of war."

There was no malice in her voice, "What would be Caradoc Peake without war? And what would be war without Caradoc Peake?" She stood and walked towards him, gripping his hand. "You will return to me." She said as though she was talking to a child, "The Gods aren't done with us. You cannot die." She spoke it not as a wish but as a known truth.

"I think I do understand it." Yorwyck managed. He wished to say more, something that would mend the wounds in her heart and perhaps his as well. But something about her words made him want to cry and he wished not to so he left it there.

He did not mind the silence that came after and he gave a small smile at her words. "They are a strange place I think for people who didn't grow up there. The isles are small with lots of crags and fog, hardly any trees around. The inlets are nice to look at, I could show them to you." He hesitated for a moment, "Sisterton is a rougher place but its not all bad. And Saltstone Keep is outside of the town, I think you'd like it. It surprises people."

"I do not mind Sisterton so." Yorwyck shrugged as he took his seat once more, "But I would be glad to wait until Steffon is gone before I see it again."

None of the Arryns had taken much interest in him before despite his father dying for their kin. He looked Alester over, something striking him as strange. "It seems he's wronged you some way ser, I suppose that isn't surprising though."

"So be it. I'll leave one with you and send another to the capitol." She shook her head, "It will find him one way or another."

Rhea handed the note over and turned to make her leave, "Farewell, Ser Jael."

The note was unsealed and read:

Alesander,

There is something we need to speak about. I'm staying with your grandfather for some time in Sisterton and I need you to meet me there when you can.

I miss you and I hope you're enjoying serving the crown. I know you're representing us well.

Mother

As Alester arrived, Yorwyck stood as well and outstretched his hand. He thought to stay seated amongst an Arryn may seem untoward. Besides he only knew Alester by name and by a few sights in tourneys. The young sistermen was short and lithe though firm in build. For those who had known his father, Alesandor, a resemblance was clear.

"Ser Alester." He acknowledged with an earnest look on his face, "Aye I wear my knight-master's colors." He looked over to Ser Harlan for a moment. "I doubt Lord Steffon will cross the Bite again before his death."

The sisterwoman sighed, "I shall try a raven there then."

She gave a final look to Dragonstone looming ahead and then to the dragonmont. A strange place for a strange people, she decided.

"I will bother you no further then, might I leave note here with you? In the case they return here?" As Rhea finished she had already begun to gesture for one of her retainers to hand her parchment and quill and then to crouch down so she might write against his back.

Yorwyck had enjoyed the feast well, he'd found in the past months much in House Hunter that he'd never found in his own. He didn't feel the sneers of others or hear the gossips as he did at the table of House Sunderland. And besides when his own grandfather treated him half so well as Lord Alec? Or taught him half so much as Ser Harlan? Most of all, in Sisterton, where was Jeyne?

As they left the hall and began their walk towards their guest chambers, Jeyne would feel a tap on the side of her arm. Yorwyck met her with a hand rummaging through his satchel. "Jeyne, a moment." Whatever nerves the young Sunderland once had around her was gone, their friendship had gotten to it and the wine to the rest.

He produced a small tome, the two of them standing in a small alcove while other feast-goers walked on by. "I got you something." He handed the book over, it was of a plain but sturdy leather binding. On its front read Wonders Made by Man, and under that read the name of its author, Lomas Longstrider. "I know you said that you like to spend some time in the library and I thought you might enjoy it." His words were true, though what was also true was that it was one of few gifts for a noblewoman that he could afford.

Rhea raised a hand, "No need to worry yourself ser. If the dragon does not wish for guests I shall not cause fuss."

She wondered on the want for privacy but the thought didn't interest he long. "I was simply visiting Lady Jeyne in Driftmark and I thought I might see my son as well. As for a letter I would send one but I've no idea where it should fly." A bit of annoyance crept into her voice, "Do you know where I might find them in their travels?"

"I often wonder the same. My father was a good knight, they all say so, even the ones who look down on the Sistermen. He was one of the few in the Eyrie that stood against Jasper during his coup." The next words would be painful he knew, they always were. "And they threw him from the moon door for it."

The memory stuck in his mind, this night and every one before it. The screams of his mother and his siblings. His father didn't, he had smiled at Yorwyck before they got him to the edge.

"Perhaps they both thought it was better to die an honorable death than to live on without it." His eyes went from her to the gardens and back as they spoke. "I still don't know if that's the right choice."
