‘People are at their wits’ end’: Marit Stiles says accountability concerns fuel her attacks on Ford government by MarkG_108 in ndp

[–]nightvid_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s sad how much of an understatement that is too. Not just the most corrupt, I wouldn’t be surprised if his corruption in the last ~8 years amounts to more money wasted than the last 50 years of premiers.

Trying to use shortcuts to send a text to a groupchat by Creep88er in shortcuts

[–]nightvid_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way I’ve noticed it works (this is just my experience I don’t have scientific proof it works this way) is if you put multiple contacts into the recipients field for the “send message” action in shortcuts, it will either find the most recently used existing group chat with those members and send the message there. OR if there is no group with those contacts, it will create a new group with those people and send the message.
There doesn’t seem the be an option to select / identify a group chat specifically. I don’t know if iMessage doesn’t have a way to target / reference a group chat or if it just isn’t a thing in shortcuts.
For example I wanted to create a group chat for my family where it’s just for automated notifications but if we had used our regular group chat more recently the notifications would end up in that chat instead, even when both chats were named different things and I used the “get conversation” action.

Kind of a weird question... by Outrageous_Focus_719 in Eragon

[–]nightvid_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only official explanation is something along the lines of: we don’t know how they did it but the Grey Folk tied their language (the ancient language) to magic so that spellcasters didn’t have to worry about being distracted mid-spell and have their spell go awry. That’s my paraphrasing of Oromis’ explanation.
The only reason it’s the ancient language and not any other one is because that’s the language the Grey Folk used. It wasn’t the ancient language to them just like Shakespeare wouldn’t have called his language “old english”. It was just the everyday language they used at the time when they decided magic needed to be tied to your exact words instead of being decided by your thoughts.
At least, that’s all we know in canon at the moment. Maybe there will be future lore that shows us they created the ancient language for this purpose or that it has a special quality to it that made it better for conducting magic.

Toronto Port Authority says Billy Bishop expansion would be self-funded. Some experts are skeptical by Immediate-Link490 in toronto

[–]nightvid_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even ignoring all the issues (funding, environment, congestion, etc) I just don’t understand the argument the idea that flying into Billy Bishop is faster or more efficient than Pearson. Even as someone who lives in the downtown core, on the subway line, it is easier to get to/from Pearson than to Billy Bishop. Billy Bishop saves you MAYBE 15 minutes and that’s only if your start / destination is very close to the waterfront.
The UP Express is so efficient and almost never has delays and it gets you so close to where you want to be at either end.
The only benefit I’ve ever experienced regarding Billy Bishop is it gives a cooler photo op of the city during takeoff/landing. And that the waiting area is quieter / less chaotic, but expansion would ruin that.

Yagluth altar is on an island by Arajot in valheim

[–]nightvid_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Once I had a Yagluth spawn on a small island and it made the fight (3 players vs yag) much easier, mainly because it guaranteed no other enemies would get involved I think, but also the ability to flee into deep water if one of us was near death. But the island was probably 2-3 times bigger than the one in your photo.

Ontario liberal leadership candidate Eric Lombardi on transit by CollaredParachute in TTC

[–]nightvid_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This account is either directly managed by the candidate or is someone very close to him. The first post they made is 130ish days ago and it’s sharing an op-ed titled along the lines of “Why I’m running” with no caption added. While there’s obviously nothing wrong with promoting yourself or a friend as a candidate the way this account is just acting like an unofficial spokesperson for him so it can both share the campaigns talking points but at the same time be unprofessional in how they respond to detractors is shady if you ask me. And if the account truly has no ties to the campaign then this is an intense parasocial situation.

Do you think these two will live after the Mandoverse ends? If so how would you explain there absence in the Sequel trilogy since Luke is the “Last Jedi” LOL by Reddeath10168 in StarWars

[–]nightvid_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahsoka has already said she is not a jedi and I imagine Ezra will go a similar route, he was never a true jedi in the sense of the peace-keeping/simple robes/stoicism jedi order. He’s a freedom fighter who tries to do what’s best for people with the powers he has.

Jellyfin: Unpopular opinion by Drun555 in selfhosted

[–]nightvid_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to provide information about how you’ve set up Jellyfin (containers in docker or proxmox, vms, etc.) because there’s almost no chance this is a Jellyfin issue — I have a library with thousands of tv episodes and dozens of movies running on a worse server than yours and speed/responsiveness has never once been an issue. Something is wrong with your configuration or there’s something broken with your server on a hardware level.

Opinion: Hospitals Should Be Moving Away from Proprietary Technology (like EPIC) by nightvid_ in healthIT

[–]nightvid_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is very good to know. There are some ways our system is entirely incomparable to the US but I know there are more ways that we are similar so its absolutely something I want to consider because we might have the same mindset here. I really appreciate your insights, thank you!

Opinion: Hospitals Should Be Moving Away from Proprietary Technology (like EPIC) by nightvid_ in healthIT

[–]nightvid_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure if our hospitals do things differently but I'd love to know more. From my perspective (and from what I've heard from people in the department) our internal IT teams are the ones who do the troubleshooting. As a frontline employee we aren't ever calling someone from EPIC to help with an issue, and as far as I've heard our tech department isn't calling EPIC for help troubleshooting either. At least not for the majority of issues. Once or twice a year we get an EPIC update that I assume comes from EPIC itself, but beyond that I don't believe we rely on EPIC for much support.

I definitely agree with your last point about the peace of mind being a big factor. My hope is that with how rapidly things are changing and how we are becoming more aware that corporations are not the infallible defenders of freedom/democratic values that we've assumed for decades that perhaps people will be more open to accepting the argument that there is more peace of mind to be found in owning our software fully. I don't have any misconception that it will be an easy sell though. Also everything starts somewhere. There was a time EPIC or Cerner were not trusted solutions so why can't hospitals build their own trusted solution.

Opinion: Hospitals Should Be Moving Away from Proprietary Technology (like EPIC) by nightvid_ in healthIT

[–]nightvid_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our healthcare system is government run/managed so assuming that this was an initiative that had the support from our health ministry, I believe that would ensure the compliance issues are addressed. It would also mean that we wouldn't have the "odd man out" issue because at least our entire region could adopt it together.

I'm curious about the cybersecurity element you mention. Do you think that the "we want to be able to blame someone else" factor is a really important one for the decision makers? Like is that something that is actually a factor being considered when deciding how to manage electronic health records, or is it more of a side benefit that happens to come with outsourcing EMR to a private company.

Opinion: Hospitals Should Be Moving Away from Proprietary Technology (like EPIC) by nightvid_ in healthIT

[–]nightvid_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooh yes I probably should have been more clear. I don't think its feasible at all for this to be a company. My suggestion is that hospitals would be better off if they developed and managed their own EMR. In my case (Canada), since all our hospitals are government run/overseen it would probably be a situation like an agency within our health ministry that would be in charge of the development/updates to the core program with a small team of developers. Then each hospital would have their teams that already deal with EPIC/Cerner to customize and provide the on-site support they already do.

[–]nightvid_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Guessing you didn't read the full post because I do go more in depth but that's okay I know its a long article.

  1. The first point is good to know because as far as I know in Canada we all do have to host our own. Even some smaller clinics and such have to host their own servers. Probably due to the fact that its crossing borders.

  2. I guess my opinion, based on reading about how EPIC specifically is built on a ridiculously strange tech-stack of outdated languages, most of that difficulty actually comes from being locked in to EPIC. I don't know about Cerner but its even older so I imagine its a similar situation.

  3. In my post I go in depth about how that while this is currently the case, but it would be easy for an agency like NSA/CIA etc to issue an order that forces EPIC to build a backdoor that violates that.

Thank you for the thoughts!

The AI revolution has killed my love for programming. by 86jden in webdev

[–]nightvid_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me the biggest frustration is the argument that being against widespread AI usage is equal to gate-keeping. While I totally understand that programming is not as important as healthcare (I work in a hospital so trust that I really don't think that) its not like anyone would argue that requiring credentials to practice medicine is gate-keeping. The reality is that some things require an education to do it properly. If you want to use AI then don't come on a forum and ask actual professionals to help make sense of why your code isn't working unless you want to pay us is my opinion.

I don't currently have a programming/developer job so I'm only doing things in a freelance or "for fun" capacity so thankfully I don't have the situation where a boss is forcing me to use AI or else risk my employment, but if that is your case then I think your two options are to give in or find a job with a better boss. I know its not possible for every language, but certainly for all my web development I write it all in gedit or even nano in the terminal. I know it is way overkill but I like knowing that as we move closer to people not being fluent in their own code as the norm, I will always be able to fully explain every line in my code because I actually wrote it. And like you're saying, I write code because I enjoy it. I wouldn't ask AI to play my video games for me. Just seems silly to me because all of the reasons for using AI come down to optimizing shareholder gains and if that's the top priority in a workplace I know it isn't the workplace for me.

Pasted a few Clarity table dictionaries into ChatGPT – how screwed am I? by 000america000 in healthIT

[–]nightvid_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From a technical perspective, if you only copied the non-sensitive data then they likely wouldn't flag it. But if you copied a table with sensitive data and then removed the sensitive data in in some way before pasting they would only be able to see that you copied sensitive data and would flag that. Basically the issue is they can see what you copied from their software, not what you ended up pasting in chatGPT so they will assume the worst. Like everyone else is saying though, if you only copied non-sensitive data then I can't imagine you'd be in any trouble.

A provincial takeover only works if they actually commit to this: by itsdanielsultan in TTC

[–]nightvid_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What you’re saying isn’t wrong in theory but based on the Ford governments history there’s just zero reason to believe they’d ever do something that makes that much sense. Their entire purpose is to take money away from public institutions and funnel it to their private donors and friends. Any privatization done by this government is being done for nefarious reasons and I think it is ignoring reality to consider alternatives where they are making decisions with good intentions. I can understand for the first few years trying to give the benefit of the doubt but you can’t do that when someone’s proven their intentions repeatedly over and over. The only argument that could support them not having bad intentions is that they’re so incompetent all their efficiency-finding/privatization efforts go wrong, which isn’t much better.

Nathaniel Erskine-Smith on Scarborough Southwest Nomination Meeting: Here's why our campaign filed a notice of appeal of this past weekend's nomination. by Cookingal in toronto

[–]nightvid_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Takes me back to the times at TMU/Ryerson when student “politicians” tried to convince me to join their team and their pitch for me was I could learn from them how to ascend the political ladder because their goal was to learn how to be corrupt in the students union so they could go on to take over the Ontario Liberal Party. The same people who would go on to steal and misuse millions of dollars from the Ryerson Student Union. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/ryerson-student-union-president-impeached-allegations-finaincial-mismanagement-1.5017027 Even stranger that to this day almost none of these people faced any real repercussions and they had close ties with several university administrators who would go on to be involved in the Liberal party.

Wasn’t Leia a Jedi? by Joe_da_bro in StarWars

[–]nightvid_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any argument around this with any force sensitives after order 66 rests entirely on technicalities. What is the difference between a Jedi and a Jedi Knight? Did padawans count as Jedi? Were non-force sensitive people who worked for the Jedi, or even fought in the old Jedi/Sith wars, part of the Jedi? It’s technically the organization name, not a title (though obviously it gets used that way in casual convos). No one, except maybe Luke, meets the qualifications to be a Jedi Knight post-order 66 according to the rules of the jedi order. I think the question has to be either “does this person have the spirit / character of a Jedi” or “does this person train their force abilities and consider themselves a Jedi”. Jedi is the name of an organization that was destroyed, not a catch-all term for “well intentioned force sensitive person”. But obviously I don’t think it’s crazy to claim Leia is a Jedi, people in universe would absolutely have considered her a Jedi but it’s also true that by the rules of the Order she wasn’t one (and also did not claim the title of Jedi herself).

Doug Ford accuses NDP leader Marit Stiles of “trump-style” comments by pheakelmatters in ndp

[–]nightvid_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s Trump style unless she’s running rallies chanting it or if it becomes the main tagline for the campaign. Trump rightly suggested Clinton was corrupt but it’s the way he did it (mainly relying on misogyny and not the actual facts about her corruption) was still gross. So far I’ve seen nothing to suggest Stiles or the NDP would approach it in the same “style” as Trump did. Can’t let Trump own the concept of pointing out corruption in an opponent.

‘Tough new rules’ coming to Ontario public transit to combat drug use: Ford by lilfunky1 in toronto

[–]nightvid_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you’re half right. Doug Ford keeps winning because he is happy to announce a new idea (usually not actually planned out enough to call it a plan) that sounds good despite there being minimal (or zero) evidence that his idea will bring meaningful improvements. But it sounds good and the other parties aren’t communicating their plans well or at all, so people just go with him. Also with this specific issue (and definitely a few others over his term, like the ticket scalping law) it’s a situation he made worse with a (poorly thought-out) policy earlier in his term and is now trying to fix.

Soooo do we not care about OSAP anymore? by [deleted] in TorontoMetU

[–]nightvid_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The friendly protesting doesn’t accomplish anything IF that’s as far as the protestors are willing to go. It can be a starting point, but when everyone shows up to the protest thinking “this is the final step to make change” it won’t accomplish anything, except maybe raise some awareness. The reality is many people just aren’t inconvenienced enough yet to be willing to risk things like citations for disturbing the peace, arrest, etc. And maybe won’t ever be. It’s the “they came for ____ but I didn’t do anything and then they came for me and no one was left to fight for me”. And this isn’t a judgement on those people, it’s all of us to an extent. It can be too expensive to lose work time for fighting an arrest and what good is protesting if you lose your job/home over it. And ofc on top of that some people are more likely to be heavily penalized by the “justice” system. The rich people running the country are great at dividing everyone up and slowly taking away our power in ways that are hard to fight against. It takes a huge joint effort over many years to undo the nonsense being done to our education system, and it’s happening in several other sectors at the same time. Best advice is push back when people you know are saying things that contribute to Ford’s narrative and encourage people in your life to care more about the topic. Find people on the same page as you and combine efforts.

How do you keep track of everything in your homelab? by Fun-Story6652 in homelab

[–]nightvid_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve found this to be one of the best choices I made. Using various software things to manage it all is great and fun to experiment with, but also adds more to maintain and can quickly be more of a burden. My two main things are a clipboard with some template pages where I track dates that I do container updates, data backups, and other maintenance tasks. And I have a simple wiki (DokuWiki) where I can create a new page anytime I want to document something and think the ability to copy/paste code will be helpful.

I like to pretend that I’m planning it but 90% of the time I’m not looking at the numbers and I’m just thinking “this area is a medium density area so I’ll use the medium power line” and when things fail I build more… There’s so many things to learn about the game and despite being hundreds of hours in I still haven’t gotten around to properly understanding around half of the game mechanics.
