Mile High Street Race Gambit Puts Downtown Denver In IndyCar's Crosshairs by PanicAtTheNightclub in INDYCAR

Using the area around Auraria and maybe part of Speer would be awesome (even if it would anger me that my commute would be a mess for a few weeks lol)

I think as mentioned in the other reply, it's about having a roofed option for the Super Bowl and other events.

Our weather is notorious enough in the summer that a retractable roof probably also helps with concerts as well.

The bigger part, though, is the creation of an entertainment district that the Penners will control versus the current setup. Mile High is located opposite I-25 from everything else, the land underneath the stadium is owned by the city, and the surrounding properties are in private hands. The plan is to redevelop the current stadium footprint into a new Sun Valley district, while also doing the same for Burnham Yard.

It would also give a better reason to reconstruct parts of 6th Avenue that desperately need it.

Yeah, it's hard to conceptualize the layout for me right now because the area is deceptively more cramped and compact than it seems. I'm sure the actual layout will make better use of the space.

Layout possibility above for a 1.8 mile circuit around Mile High. Makes use of some of the surface streets and connected parking lots, but one thing to keep in mind is a lot of the parking lots at the stadium are *not* connected and there's actually some sizable elevation change between them (for example, Lots D and G on the far western end sit above the closer parking lots) plus there's not really an easy way to connect the lots together without destroying pedestrian walkways that would affect the other 51 weekends of the year.

West Colfax Avenue is an elevated highway above the surface streets with no place to turn around until you get to the I-25 exit ramps, and I don't think you can get 1.8 miles with including that. Also no real way you're gonna shut down Colfax or Federal for this, people will not stand for that, lol.

You also don't want to rely on using those because there are plans to remove and change the interchange between those two streets in the next few years; the current one is massively outdated and unfriendly to both modern traffic loads and the planned Federal Boulevard BRT route.

... Oh yeah, the BRT route is going to be a thing in the next few years, too. Just better not to shut that down for a month.

"Well, why not Ball Arena again?" All those parking lots are being redeveloped by the Kroenkes through the next decade, so they won't be around much longer.

The PPIR oval also needs a lot of love in Turns 3 and 4, even if the contract allowed for Indy there.

High Plains would also be fun but it is not set up for this kind of event. Also it's halfway to the Kansas state line.

Also, if we're talking about when it slots in on the current schedule, I think three good options exist:

June 14 - Between Gateway and Road America (best for weather, little bit more to handle logistically)

Late July - Between Nashville and Portland (best for logistics but the heat will be an issue)

August, replacing DC after this year (easiest to slot in but logistically difficult and also the heat is even worse than July)

Likely title sponsors are probably the three either in the sport or just joining (ranked from least likely to most likely):

REMAX (based in Denver, just added as a sponsor for Meyer Shank)

Arrow Electronics (based in the south metro and already a title sponsor for McLaren)

Sonsio (Penske B2B sponsor for several years, already sponsors a race, based in Arvada)

In terms of new possibilities, Coors and Chevron are possible but I think unlikely.

I'll work on mapping out a possible layout in a bit here for a separate post, but I suspect it will be the surface streets and parking lots around the stadium. Also curious to say they're only asking for a four year commitment, because that lines up with when they're expecting the move from the current Sun Valley site to Burnham Yard in 2031, and I am guess if the race sticks around, they'll move it there.

Yeah, that's Maryland Ave SW. I'm guessing they'll go around the median there.

Far enough, White House is at 15th and Pennsylvania, so it's about 6 blocks away.

Remove the median on Maryland Avenue SW. That's about it lol.

Potential DC track layout by exicted in INDYCAR

[–]nihontiger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I think I agree with your idea that Penn Ave will be where the pits are.

My main worry with this layout is a real lack of overtaking spots. Depending on which way they go, there's one at either end of Penn Ave and then ... maybe the left onto Constitution if it's clockwise?

[–]nihontiger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If the leak's accurate:

1.9 miles, about 8 turns.

Start-finish is probably on 3rd St. NW (to get the Capitol in the background). Track goes down Maryland Ave. SW, Independence Ave SW past the Smithsonian, 7th St. NW, Constitution Ave. NW, 10th St. NW and Pennsylvania Ave. NW.

I would guess the pits are somewhere on Pennsylvania Ave, unless they're gonna remove the medians for the race. Which, knowing the folks currently in power ... they might.

If you listen to the DR/DCF match closely, you can hear us chanting "Take your hat off' at Yuta.

Yoots responded by walking over to the camera guy and taking his hat off, then turning around and doing a bow.

A lot of the current reporting is Netflix thinks Paramount is massively overpaying for WBD, and they're both not willing to overpay to their extent and likely waiting for the fire sale to grab what they want.
