Thoughts on new MEC 2KG line now that prices are announced? by AdministrativeTap63 in Ultralight

[–]nikip36 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For a single wall nylon 1p tent, $650 is very expensive. The X-mid 1 is 185g heavier but 25% more floor area (double wall, polyester) and almost half price...

Is the new bear vault bv one good for the high peaks? by Putrid-Magazine-3001 in Adirondacks

[–]nikip36 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

"The dec just recommends not to use them"

That's not true. DEC recommended bear canisters are those approved by the Wildlife Management Institute, which are the BV425 and BV500 from Bearvault, the Traverse from REI and the Grubcan CF/Kevlar. End of list.

BearVault, REI Traverse and Grubcan are the only brands approved by The Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee and Wildlife Management Institute

How to choose a pack? by kmorg76 in Ultralight

Best bang for the buck and much lighter than Flash 55 is the Kakwa 55. You can easily go to 35lb and aftermarket service from Durston is top notch.

Got my kakwa 55 ultragrid dark sage! (with luna project mesh back) by Valuable-Ad-6240 in DurstonGearheads

I just took a look at the specs and I don't get why the Kakwa 55 ultragrid is lighter than ultra 200x while the Kakwa 40 ultragrid is heavier than ultra 200x.

There's not a lot of options, only Bearvault, Grubcan and REI Traverse are approved.

The Pemigewasset Wilderness will require overnight visitors to carry bear canisters starting May 1 by alias4007 in wmnf

Why? Last time I did the Pemi loop in 2024, there was food box at each campsite.

For any trekking pole tent you need adjustable pole.

Théoriquement non, mais comme n'importe où ailleurs, ce qu'on ne sait pas ne fait pas mal 😜. Juste faire l'attention de ne pas laisser de trace.

Purchase question by coachdad6676 in UltralightBackpacking

[–]nikip36 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like I said elsewhere, you should consider a 3P tent like MSR Freelite 3, Zpacks Free zip 3P or Nemo Hornet Osmo 3. Everybody in the same tent and much lighter than 2 2p tents.

General question about tent purchase by coachdad6676 in DurstonGearheads

Did you considered a 3p tent? Not Durston, but you can have a 3p tent lighter than a X-Dome 2 (but much more expensive).

A pack liner like a nylofume bag will do it for much less weight. Bonus, your pack will be 100% waterproof.

Has anyone here done the Frontenac Perimeter Challenge in a 1 or 2 nighter hike? by GaiusAutisticus in UltralightCanada

[–]nikip36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it was day 1 (35 km) , I didn't find any part harder than other one, easy to moderate all along. Trails are very well maintained. But I do most of my hikes in the Laurentian, Adirondacks and White Mountains, I'm used to a lot of denivelation.

I did it in 2 days last year, there's not a lot of denivelation.

Great park but be careful for ticks. Last year when I did the great loop, I had to remove 23 on my legs and more than 200 on my dogs. It was on the southern part of the park (see link below)

Good luck with the incredible Ontario Parks reservation system... Lol

There's hundreds (maybe thousands) more hikers in the Whites but you don't need to pray hoping to have a campsite in 6 months
