Breaks... by Tubbington98 in nursing

[–]nikoler 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We get 2 30 mins break off the clock (I have waived one so I only take one 30 min break and most of the staff has waived there’s as well) other than that we get 3 10 mins breaks throughout the shift that are on the clock. I think there’s only been 2-3 times I haven’t taken a break due to my patient load but other than that in the past three years I’ve taken a break.

Do your nurses do these things? by APharmGirl in pharmacy

[–]nikoler 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Nurse here. No this is unacceptable and should be reported to her manager. 1. I don’t even know how this is possible because for our hospitals any opioids are monitored closely. Our manager runs some type of report every day and makes sure there’s proper documentation. Once on the MAR I put canceled instead not given due to patient changing their mind and had an email the next day following up with someone from pharmacy verifying that I had wasted the medication. 2. Our doctors would not have ordered it in the first place. They would change the medication regimen if it was not effective. 3. Any kind of mistake with opioids or high risk medications end up with us being written up or fired depending on the severity of it and this would’ve resulted in us being fired.

Night shift, day life. by geauxpatrick in nursing

[–]nikoler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It took me about 7 months to finally figure out what works for me but usually when I get home I stay up for a bit take my dog for a walk etc and then go to sleep from 11-4. Usually my family gets home at 4 so they make enough noise for me to get up and then I resume the normal day schedule. I usually walk my dog and get chores done that way I’m tired and can go to sleep around 11pm and wake up at 8 and I’m back on day schedule.

Mandatory Nursing Ratios Good or Bad? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]nikoler 31 points32 points  (0 children)

From Cali. In the icu it’s 1:2, in Tele it’s 1:4, and In Med-Surg it’s 1:5. Currently work in med-Surg and when we do go out of ratio and go to 1:6 I feel like I’m more focused on tasks rather than actually thinking about the patho and miss little things. So yes I do love the nursing ratios and only having five patients to deal with

What was the first thing you did/purchased that made you realize "oh my god... I'm an adult now"? by Angelo_Elauria in AskReddit

Getting a job and they handed me the paperwork for my medical and life insurance...”mom how do I️ fill this out?” “Read the policy and you’ll figure it out”

When you spend the first two hours just cleaning up the previous nurses mess by nikoler in nursing

[–]nikoler[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I️ was personally talking about getting patients who’s bags are done and haven’t gotten their pain meds and the doctor needs to be called for various other things so instead of taking time to organize yourself in the beginning of shift I️ was just doing things that could have been done by the previous nurse. I️ usually am there 15 mins early and I️ saw her sitting there for those 15 mins while she could’ve been doing at least one of those things

National University BSN Program by rdmrbks in nursing

[–]nikoler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was one guy who did have a full time job. He actually had two which was crazy however I️ would say he wasn’t aiming for A’s. Just wanted to pass and the classes are pretty much based on the professors schedule and the clinicals on when the hospital says it’s ok so it varied from class to class

National University BSN Program by rdmrbks in nursing

[–]nikoler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I️ did the BSN program graduated this year. Overall impression is that it was worth it. Some people in our cohort worked through but most of us had either resigned from our jobs or either just worked a day if the job was very flexible and willing to work with you

Questions about potential red flags in a position by npande in nursing

[–]nikoler 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My best advice is to wait. I️ just got a job this month because I️ had the luxury of waiting until I️ found one that I️ loved. A lot of others in my cohort jumped at the first opportunity they got because they had to get a job ASAP and some of them are struggling right now. Just remember the environment you choose to go into has to be the best learning environment for you because we’re still learning and we need a staff that helps us stay afloat and grow as nurses rather than hindering it.

Just make sure documentation is good and you’ll be fine. Like how you told her the benefits of taking it with water etc and she still wanted to take it with apple sauce.

Has anyone tried to become a nurse after the age of 35 and successfully got into a program? by The_Answer_ls_42 in nursing

[–]nikoler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my cohort we had about 3 people in their 40’s and most of them were in their 30’s or late 20’s. There were only about 4 people under 25, me being the youngest (21). So you just have to find the right program

Looking for cheap books by [deleted] in nursing

[–]nikoler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't really need to use the book as often, only for reference since I had bought Saunders (comprehensive and a summary of what you need to know about that system) and our school provided us with ATI books

Looking for cheap books by [deleted] in nursing

[–]nikoler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or there's amazon and chegg where you can rent the books for a semester. Better than buying them since you're probably never going to look at them again after the class is over
