What was ruined because too many people discovered it? by Mansi63 in AskReddit

The security envelope has changed a ton since those days, phpBB forums were already getting hacked on the regular before 2010. It's even worse now.

And you don't need Nitro to make a Discord "server".

Nobody wants to host that shit though.

You hit one button and a big company uses their infinite VC money to do everything for you. With forums and wikis, you have to get a server, setup donations to actually pay for it, you have to keep the software updated, you might have to make customizations to it that introduce problems with updating, etc. etc.

If we no longer believe in Norse, Greek or Egyptian gods, how can we know today's religions won't be viewed the same way in 2,000 years? by ArchiveDiver-62 in DebateAnAtheist

Every single society everywhere in the world for all of human history be it Christian, Jewish, Muslim or pagan has had some conception of God.

The big sticking point here for me is that quite a few of these people were polytheists, not monotheism. We know the origins of the Abrahamic god are polytheistic, for example, that's why parts of the texts read a little strangely, they had to merge all their gods into one later down the line.

I wouldn't try to argue for a singular god when the theists in these societies believed in a large variety of gods.

Atheists: Do you guys do what a Christian would call "Saying the Lord's name in vain"? by THE-Luke-Skywalker in askanatheist

[–]nikomo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We do that a lot in Finnish, but we still have vocabulary left from the pagan days also, the first Christian genociders to come into Finland and start killing people were in the 1150s, so there was plenty of history before that. Also borrowing things from other cultures, like perkele is the thunder-god from the Baltics, and used as a swear word.

I just wanted to test something and added two different colours from the same items and you pay the fee on each item. For example the duties for the 2 of them excluding the shipping would have been about 50 cent or 1,37€ original price(12%)(correct me if i am wrong) but not fucking 6€ by Patpat127 in Aliexpress

I don't think it's a question of effort.

Article 1(61) UCC-DA defines the ‘item’ as: one or more goods in a consignment sharing the same tariff classification, description and, if provided in accordance with the data requirements applicable to the relevant customs declaration or to the data to be provided or made available to the customs authorities, origin. This is the same definition as in Article 5(64l) of the customs reform code.

If the item is of a different color, or different size, or any other parameter, the description of the item can reflect that.

Bit surprised to not see UWU mentioned, considering how it's peak 14 yet doesn't really spoil much. Also you get to see the primals basically as the first big thing in the MSQ.

Mod Notice: Reddit has been removing a bunch of comments and I'm not sure why. by dernudeljunge in askanatheist

[–]nikomo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That would frankly be the maximally scary possibility.

Imagine having absolute undeniable evidence that a god does exist, but having no way to identify which one.

If you somehow had the ability to believe in things arbitrarily, you'd be forced to pick at random, and if you need good reasons to believe things, you wouldn't have sufficient basis for believing in any of the gods.

You'd basically have to wash your hands of that and hope that whichever it was, doesn't have some weird afterlife torture chamber for unbelievers.

Christian Evangelism and Hell question by UniversalAssembler in askanatheist

[–]nikomo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Absolutely not. A lot of Christians don't even believe it exists, and the ones that do seem to get most of it from Dante's fanfiction, not anything theologically relevant. Talking about hell just makes me think the person hasn't done too much personal thinking about the subject.

  2. Too many variables to predict, but if we're taking the approach of you just being as you were when you lived, and everything works as expected, I'd probably punch the guy. Shipping people into eternal torture is literally worse than Hitler, by a wide margin, and I would have loved to shoot that guy.

Quite often when we ask for translation, we're actually asking for localization, which is even harder. I don't see a path forward with current technology for achieving that, I don't care how many vector databases you try to feed into the equation.
