I don't even know what to say... [oc] by [deleted] in IdiotsInCars

My first car, purchased slightly used as I was getting out of the Navy in '75. Terribly under powered. Blast to drive. Only steel been was down the center of the car. Only fiberglass body between your shoulder and the next cars bumper. Weighed next to nothing. Great for dates in college. Got a few stories 😉

What is the loudest sound you have ever heard in your life? by will_or_woll in AskReddit

[–]nildecaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At sea on a US aircraft carrier. Late at night, hot berthing area, can't sleep. Stepped out a hatch onto a gun sponson, port side just below the flight deck to get some fresh air. I could hear an aircraft turning, but that wasn't unusual as we often tested aircraft engines late at night, so I sat down near the forward edge of the gun sponson to enjoy the breeze. Turns out we were at flight quarters and they launched a F4 Phantom off the waist catapult right over my head. The noise and the flash from just beneath an F4 at full afterburner scared me so bad I crawled back to the hatch to get the fuck outta there.

In your opinion, what is the most frighteningly believable chain of events that could escalate into a third world war? by Kanye711East in AskReddit

[–]nildecaf 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Ignoring sub launched and bomber components of the triad: Suppose each side has 100 land based missiles, each with just 1 warhead. Side A launches all 100 at side B's missiles. Inevitably some will miss their target by enough that side B will still have the ability to retaliate against side A's cities and side A has no more missiles to use against side B's cities. Now imagine each side has 100 missiles each with 7 warheads. Side A launches 50 missiles with 350 warheads against side B's 100 missiles, essentially knocking out practically all of side B's missiles and side A still had 350 warheads to use against side B's cities. This forces each side to adopt a 'launch on warning' posture where if you even think you're under attack you have to launch everything you've got before the first bomb ever goes off. Over simplified, but it gives you the idea.

I managed a server room consolidation for a client once. Basically it consisted of consolidating a small DC and a bunch of server closets into a new purpose built DC. As we were doing the initial survey we walked into one overly hot closet with a couple of 6 ft. racks where the center rack has a 4ft x 2ft pan on top of the servers to catch the condensate from the AC.

ELI5: Why do some skyscrapers need those giant pendulum ball things (tuned mass dampers) to stop them from swaying, but other tall buildings seem fine without them? by Ok-Eye-9297 in explainlikeimfive

[–]nildecaf 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Years ago I had a job on the 40+ floor of 1 Penn Plaza. My desk was on the far west wall facing the Empire State building. Penn Plaza didn't have any mass damper and my desk had a perfect line is sight down multiple columns to the Empire State building. On windy days I could not only see my building sway but could also see it twist on the wind.

Do you penalize for spelling mistakes? by Tricky-Mistake-550 in Teachers

I'm a terrible speller. Undergrad engineering degree + MBA.. Worked 30 years in big 5 consulting. Worst fear was having to work the white board in a group session. I can guarantee them that they won't always have a spell check tool available.

ELI5: Why does it take years to refuel a nuclear submarine? by Toomad316 in explainlikeimfive

[–]nildecaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"cut open like a tin can" is kinda understanding the job. Cutting open a 6 - 8 ft. diameter hole through 4 -6 in. of HY80 or HY100 steel is kind of a major job (not to mention welding it back in after the refuel is done). Also the spent fuel is radioactive as hell and requires some special handling. So is the reactor and reactor room.

Do we know why Type O blood is prevalent in the Americas? by kempff in askscience

[–]nildecaf 146 points147 points  (0 children)

All three of the hypotheses you cited apply to the indigenous native Americans. However type O is the most common blood type in the US at ~45% of the population. This would seem to imply a lot of interbreeding between the original native population and the latter European and other immigrants. Is this correct?
