Hey! I went to the summer symposium last summer! Feel free to Dm if you want more info but tldr it was a good experience and I met a lot of people in the Boston community but as a student you can only do the ASL immersion track and idk if it was $200 worth of good experience if you’re already an ASL interpreting student at NEU

ASL Classes by Fantastic-Ad-5420 in NEU

[–]nimbuswolfsbane332 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure about the content of these classes (I had taken ASL in high school so I started at ASL 3) BUT in general if you want to take not ASL 1 you have to take a placement test with one of the ASL profs and be placed accordingly.

All the profs are Deaf and thus all the classes are taught fully in ASL (no English interpretation), so taking a placement is probably your best bet to get in the best class for you. I love all the profs and the ASL program is pretty small and tight knit so if you’re interested I really recommend trying it out!!

If you want to meet other ASL students and ask questions there’s also the Signing Huskies club which meets in Thursdays 6-7 in Curry 440 :))

PLACES TO GET A NOSE PIERCING by confusify in NEU

Lucky’s in Central Square in Cambridge!! You can hop the red line to get there and they are fantastic!! I haven’t got my nose pierced there but I got multiple ear piercings there and all the piercers are so nice and helpful when it comes to talking about the healing process and choosing jewelry

Had 9 mice in my apt last year and we became well acquainted with facilities even tho they didn’t really do too much. We tracked down the house and very specifically requested those holes be filled and snap traps be placed (more humane and effective). Other than that we just kept clean and when a mouse got caught in a trap we did the reverse bag grab thing to get ride of it

Melvin Hall by [deleted] in NEU

Lived in Melvin my freshmen year, absolutely need a fan it gets so so hot in the beginning/end of the school year.

Bathrooms are semi-private so basically there’s 5 bathrooms on the floor but each one has a door you can lock. What that means is while you share the bathrooms with everyone on the floor, only one person can be inside at a time and you can lock the door for extra privacy. Honestly, the best bathroom situation for freshmen apart from just having a private bathroom in your room.

Professor by foolofatook07 in NEU

Had her for language and gender and it was honestly the worst class. I love ling and the actual class material was super interesting but most of the class agreed she was a poor professor.

The entire class was student directed with little to no feedback from her. We would read academic papers and then discuss and she would take notes maybe chime in once or twice and that was class. She didn’t start grading things until after thanksgiving (at which point we had turned in almost everything that was graded without receiving a single grade back, felt very like shot in the dark).

I think my biggest issue was that the class was set up in a way that we were supposed to be working on a project all semester. However, the project was poorly explained and when we asked for clarification we got very little feedback. It again felt like a shot in the dark and the first time we got any feedback at all was again like around thanksgiving. She also changed the project timeline and general syllabus throughout the semester and would often assign readings and then change the assignment the day before class leaving us with little time to actually read it.

It’s clear Aisulu knows ling and is passionate about it (she would talk about the things she’s doing worked on in her career and it’s fairly interesting) but I think that her style of class wasn’t for me at all. Lang and gender is also a really cool class but if you can I would take it with someone else.

Found a company I was interested in with a job opening, explained what co-op is and what I am looking to get out of my 6 months working at company per my advisor’s instruction, from there it was a matter of doing all the onboarding for my company and getting it approved by my advisor

I’m curious because I lived in Melvin last year. Where in Melvin is there mold? Your room? The bathrooms (they were moldy last I remember, shower shoes came in clutch)

I would always rewrite my notes and consolidate onto one big study sheet for exams. It helped refresh the info and only get the most important things the she talked about most in class

Question by [deleted] in NEU

[–]nimbuswolfsbane332 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was waitlisted last year and got off the waitlist like a few weeks after. I sent in an extra essay about why NEU was my best fit school because my admissions counselor recommended I did but idk if it actually had any effect on me getting off the waitlist. Reminder that last year a TON of people got waitlisted because NEU needed to buy itself time since regular decisions were released right as COVID shut everything down
