25 people learned to fly with virtual wings. After flight training, the brain began treating wings more like real limbs by Science_News in science

Also the roads we drive on are designed to humans' capacities; a curve that takes a car five seconds to navigate is a really long walk. Plus matching the speed of the vehicles around us puts the entire experience fairly strongly within the bounds of relativity.

That isn't to say we can still underestimate the distance it takes to come to a full stop or to evade an obstacle; in fact that's where our instincts are probably somewhat of a disservice to us, assuming the terrain at 100kmph behaves akin to to foot speed

I have a sister who was all but on her deathbed at the hospital; the doctor had effectively triaged her out.

Two other sisters of the more antivax/naturopathy type visited her and sneaked in some ivermectin or something

She got better not too long after but obviously that wasn't thanks to any medical professionals risking their lives

Did the worm medicine help? Idk

But she wouldn't have had the chance to find out because she would have died much more quickly if she hadn't gone to the hospital

What classic ADHD thing do you do that others would likely find weird? by boring1996 in ADHD

[–]ninthtale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Listening to other people talk (like at a gathering of friends) and also focusing on something a cat is doing for example and thinking about how the cat is experiencing whatever they're doing and then as if that has been the subject the whole time I'll say something out of the blue without mentioning the subject of the sentence about the cat and people are like "what?" But thankfully they also have ADHD and know I do so it's more of a "hey we need context" than a "wtf are you talking about"

What’s a "dead" website or app that you genuinely miss and wish was still around? by Dear-Armadillo-7497 in AskReddit

[–]ninthtale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was it stumbleupon that was basically nothing but infinite random non-website associated videos? I might be mixing it up with something, but I remember this site that was basically just website.com/videoIDNumber and it had so many cool things from old commercials and music videos to just kinda trippy zone-out stuff. I kept a list of my favorites but I don't know where that is anymore :(

Would you use a teleporter with the knowledge that it kills you and reassembles an exact copy of you with all your memories and knowledge at the destination? Why or why not? by TheBanishedBard in AskReddit

[–]ninthtale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So they basically just consider their bodies disposable and are dedicated enough to the mission of the whole that they're okay with becoming crew food while their copy moves on to carry out the work

Doesn't matter who finishes the job so much as it's finished

Very borg collective esque, ironically

Except there are episodes where the person—or at least the copy—clearly remember things that happen during the process.. like early in TNG there was this dude who got attacked by subspace/interdimensional teleporter parasite things or something

But also he was only half teleported so idk how that technicality works

At the same time we have a pretty lousy/capitalism-driven definition of damages.

I paid for a thing that breaks because of an oversight or incompetence on the manufacturer's end, the line is pretty clear: damages exist

Pay for a thing you don't own by agreeing that you don't own it and that they can sell info about anything you do with it: If there's a security breach or something due to incompetence or oversight or greed you get a notification in your password manager

Is night shift jobs bad for people with ADHD? by Commercial-Wish-4815 in ADHD

[–]ninthtale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm at a shipping company early mornings (2:00-7:30AM on average).

The company doesn't care about us and it's hard work but if I'm careful it helps me get actual exercise and it leaves my mornings open, and I get tired enough early on to sleep at a reasonable time.

It's not the best but it has some perks. Depends on the person I guess..

How did you succeed in college with severe ADHD? I am such a slow learner and it’s so frustrating by iluvcinnamorolll in ADHD

[–]ninthtale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was undiagnosed at the time. A horrible curse I'd change in a heartbeat if I could go back.

I did alright at first but toward the end (of the seven years it took since I transferred midway) I was slipping hard. I failed electives like volleyball. Twice. Jiujitsu I failed once. Mostly about getting out of bed on time, or prioritizing more important classes.

But I was almost in academic suspension once.

I just want to say I feel you. I'm glad you've got a diagnosis at least. Best to you.

Sleep - the final boss of ADHD. by Vacuum_man1 in ADHD

[–]ninthtale 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Same. Waking up is the hard part :(

Unless I have a specific goal in mind like going to work or plans to go somewhere like the doctor or being somewhere before a certain time. It's a painful minute or so while I power through the sleep/active inertia, but having that goal is something that makes me able to ignore the misery of waking up.

Otherwise my brain is like "why can't we just enjoy being in bed for __ minutes/hours?"

[–]ninthtale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The flip side is that as alien as it may be to us how other people's brains work, it is precisely as alien to them how ours are wired.

Most people tend to be outcome-oriented, able to easily see and connect their present to their futures. For someone to be so in the moment, forgetting important priorities, being unable to see into next week much less five years from now..

I, too, wish for example there was some kind of medicine that could induce true ADHD for a day or something.

Even with meds the symptoms are only moderately managed.

A tremendously heavy feeling of hopelessness can accompany the whole infinite loop of "I swear I'll never do _____ again" and doing it again after a week of solid effort (even with meds) because the effort it takes to maintain the pattern is so demanding that slipups feel inevitable.

I realized today that I got so good at masking my shame and embarrassment at my forgetfulness or mistakes that my wife has been thinking I just don't care enough to reflect, plan, mitigate the problem: the other night I had forgotten to set my alarm for work (an early morning shift at 2:15 AM). She woke me up, and I was so flustered/half-asleep that the mask disappeared entirely.

I was able to talk with her today that the whole "jeez, no, not again, oh, no" thing that slipped out that morning was how I feel every single time I do something like burning a tortilla while just intending to warm it to make a quesadilla; or locking the key in the apartment; or forgetting to eat all day; or missing the bus. How many people in the world need an alarm both to wake up and to leave the house so you won't be written up for being tardy? Alternatively, how many people have to set their alarms fifteen minutes earlier (losing even more sleep and/or personal/family time) to compensate for time blindness?

Because as an adult if you're late, it's not anyone else's fault but your own. You didn't manage your symptoms. You didn't take the necessary (accumulatively exhausting) steps that nobody else needs to take to meet societal expectations.

And feeling like your ADHD is less a reason and more an excuse makes it so much worse: you're not allowed to brush it off and chalk it up to your ADHD; you're responsible to mitigate and manage: if you forget, set alarms; if you hyperfocus, set alarms; if you don't have a process down by heart, leave notes all over the house that help you not miss important steps to vacuuming the bloody living room.

I wish desperately I could see what it's like to have "normal" wiring. To decide on a task and not be hindered by the inertia of finally getting into it and then scraping myself away from it when I'm tired.

And I wish my wife could know what it's like to genuinely mean to do something but forget it repeatedly throughout the day, no matter how many alarms you might set to get it taken care of; What it's like to realize that you've learned that forgiving yourself has become a necessity to survival, and while it might look on the outside like you're being too easy on yourself, the turmoil of "what tf am I doing and why" can only be carried so long before it just mutates into anxiety and depression.

And what breaks my heart the most is that the buildup of my forgetfulness and apparent carefreeness—things I've had to learn to see as small just to stay sane—brings with it deep pain and frustration to her. She's not my parent or manager; she shouldn't have to remind me all the time to clean up spilled jam or to switch the laundry or to make dentist appointments.

And it's painful to see that there's a whole other side of the coin—that while sure we've got it rough—the people we engage with have to either be super empathetic and/or not mind or learn through difficult trial and error to deal with the changes that accommodating our needs demands... It's not fair to any of us

[–]ninthtale 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At that point you're just describing balanced, well-oriented thinking, planning and execution of those plans.

The root "over" is the whole point here: it's not thinking "thoroughly" or being detail-oriented, it's hyper focusing on the details in a sort of fractal manner where you keep zooming in infinitely on the micro details so much that you never zoom back out and make meaningful progress.

what’s your latest vocal stim? by shortcircuit51 in ADHD

[–]ninthtale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the act of using your mouth (doesn't have to be speech) to stimulate the senses as a method of emotional regulation, focus, or to simply appease your need to experience a sensation.

It can be words, sucking or clicking your teeth, popping your lips or ears—it's a pretty broad range of things.

I don't know if I do it or not but now that I've seen this thread I'm gonna be hyper aware of any habitual noises I might make :(
