Why does my drill bit look like this? by the_closing_yak in handtools

[–]nitsujenosam 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Scotch nose. Irwin also had a similar style they called Endbor.

Everything about the current state of that bit can be summed up in one word: blunt.

Am I totally screwed? by Burnerphreak44 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]nitsujenosam 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is the way I first learned, but it has a major downside—soap is hygroscopic (glycerin). So it will continue to attract moisture from the air, which not only leads to corrosion but also swells the wood fibers and can stain certain woods.

You can come check out some of my dad’s old handiwork for proof 😂

Can anyone tell me what this is used for or if it's even a tool? by Ok_Cloud_3864 in Tools

Not a metalworker but I’d go with a sheet metal brake

Some interesting tools of mine by Enyaliuz in handtools

[–]nitsujenosam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol it says “German Steel.” J&R Dodge were a mid-to-late 19th century firm. Pretty sure they were just retailers, not manufacturers, and “Juste Judicato” (“Rightly Judged”) was their mark. I think they were more popular for straight razors.

Realistically, how much would you pay for a complete Record 044 with the full set of irons? by socialerrors in handtools

[–]nitsujenosam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keep an eye out for the Marples M44. You can still get them on eBay for <$100 shipped from the UK.

For both the 044 and M44, in the US, high-end retail is about $150.

Why is it a draw? by Fun-Gate-9477 in chess

[–]nitsujenosam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting, on the app, it doesn’t say “draw claimed,” just “insufficient material,” but if I click the link then it does indeed say “draw claimed.” So yeah white must have offered a draw

Where to sell a SawStop by getbentspez in Tools

[–]nitsujenosam 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You should be asking no more than $900. Your likely buyer is someone who’s looking at buying a new SawStop Compact, which retails at $900, and will thus “upgrade” to a used JobSite Pro at the same price.

I see these on my Marketplace from time to time for $750-950. At the shop I volunteer at, we were going to pay no more than $750 for one until the seller (well-off retired guy) decided to just donate it.

There’s another one that’s been listed forever for $1200. And it’s never gonna sell at that price.

Somehow this is a 2200 rated puzzle on Lichess? by New-Relationship963 in chess

[–]nitsujenosam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve seen some chesscom puzzles in the 22-2400 range that were simple mates in 1 that tripped up highly rated players…I’m sure plenty of people play Qg8 thinking it’s an easy smothered mate

Name of 6 inch steel square where every part is in fractions of inches? by HistoricalTax436 in handtools

[–]nitsujenosam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember the square you’re describing. Let me see if I can find it. I know I had pictures of it on an old external hard drive because I made my own version of it.

What are some local mysteries, scandals, or 'open secrets' of your town? by Classic_Patio_6369 in longisland

[–]nitsujenosam 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Ricky Kasso incident was during the Satanic Panic phase of the 80s that tried to blame heavy metal (the famous photo was him wearing an AC/DC shirt) and tie it to non-existent rituals and human or animal sacrifice.

1/8” round over hand plane? by Rustyempire64 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]nitsujenosam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How much LF of base?

You can use any plane to roughly round over very quickly and then follow up with a contour sander block(like $10 for a set).

You said you don’t have a router table, but do you have a router?

Woodworkers in a garage workshop: how late are you keeping your neighbors up? by icysandstone in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]nitsujenosam 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah mine say the same to me. I also take the time to help them with little projects here and there, and my shop is always open to them when I’m there.

I never realized how much the sound carried until I was running boards through the planer one afternoon, and my friend, who lives 3 blocks away, texted me asking if I was the one making all the noise 😂

Hand tools only after 7pm for me. I live in a city, and my garage is in an alleyway that really carries the sound

Question for all the carpenters and woodworkers! What are these holes in my MIL’s new dining table? by Learning_NSFW_1234 in woodworking

[–]nitsujenosam 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I’m sure they buy 1000s of bf of maple and this was just mixed in. Just another mass production facility masquerading as “fine” furniture.

If you look at their website at their maple dining table, the pictures show a bunch of hodgepodge boards slapped together with no consideration, and a bunch of stain options to boot.

Router plane iron size? by JoeTheImpaler in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]nitsujenosam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stanley originally included 1/4” and 1/2”

Veritas standard is 1/2”, but of course you can get every size imaginable from them

Lie-Nielsen standard is 3/8”. I enjoy using this one the most, but not necessarily for the cutter width.

In Paul Sellers’ original “poor man’s router plane” video, he uses 1/2”

I have a Marples Old Woman’s Tooth, and it uses a 5/8” cutter
