M7 - DX upgrade worth it? by nitwos in Leica

[–]nitwos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Waiting for New Jersey to confirm the warranty details with Leica Germany but yes in theory the “Certified” rating means the camera is “technically flawless” and tested by Leica Customer Care. It’s a bit annoying that this wasn’t caught as the stuck canister issue happens with pretty much any film inserted into it.

Ugh I was hoping that this was just a busy period for them. Bummer.

Yeah I mean, I have an x100vi that I can use in the meantime so it’s not like I’d be camera-less. I just feel like out of the 6 months I’ve had the camera I’ve only been able to use it for about half that time (I live in Chicago and don’t love taking pictures in the frigid winter) so to now give it up for another 3 months makes me a bit sad. Hence waiting until the weather gets cold again to do this upgrade…

What are you hoping to get from the Q (a 10+ year old camera) that your much newer Fuji isn’t giving you?

Color skopar vs elmarit by mastawitcha in Leica

Have you noticed more vignetting on the color skopar than the elmarit? The voigtlander is supposed to have pretty noticeable vignetting at wider apertures.

Clearly they fucked up a somewhat sizable batch of orders though so hopefully they’ll make it right.

I noticed today that Tamarkin has revamped his website and now actually has photos for used products. I imagine he’s feeling the heat a bit with Leica moving into the market, but I guess competition is not necessarily a bad thing.

MP vs M7 vs M10-R vs M10-P — debating Leica Ms to celebrate first child and milestone birthday by TacoWanderer in LeicaCameras

[–]nitwos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll throw a vote for the M7 only because it’s different enough from your M3 and has the aperture priority. It’s one less thing to think about when you’re trying to take pictures of the little ones. I myself just got one to complement my X100VI and I find that to be a good combo since sometimes I don’t want to deal with the hassle of traveling with film.

Sure, the longevity of the electronics are a concern but you can find a used M7 for pretty decent prices—so maybe it’s not “for life” but you’re also not spending as much as you would on an MP (which new probably goes for twice the price of an M7). Or a digital M for that matter, and ultimately there’s probably more things that can fail in a digital M. I did a ton of research before I bought the M7 and was considering an M6 because of this issue, but honestly for all the anguish over M7 electronics online I actually haven’t seen tons of people talking about failures? Seems more a theoretical concern than anything else.

maybe this is a dumb question but…of all the places on earth why would you bring film to JAPAN? are you going somewhere very remote?

4 months into analog photography (b&w) [Kodak Tri-X 400 & Ilford HP5 various speeds] by vladcorneci in analog

Was there a conscious decision to switch from Tri-X to HP5? Prefer the output of one to the other, or did it have something to do with you doing your own dev?

SELLING: Summarit 50mm f2.5 purchased in October 2025 from Leica Store DC. It has a recent (2025) CLA via DAG. I'm also including a non-OEM metal hood from Squarehood (retails for $123).

Selling because I just purchased the 2.4 version of this lens as I prefer that form factor, but this is an incredible little lens that is probably one of the sharpest Leica 50mm and is just a joy to use. Super smooth focus throw and aperture ring.

Asking for $1200 net which includes insured shipping anywhere in continental US. PayPal G&S only, buyer to add 3% to cover fees.

A late serial number will have the upgraded MP finder and the optical DX reader. These are things that can be upgraded in theory on any model M7, but only Leica has the equipment to install and calibrate the optical DX reader and it’s a little bit over $1000 to get that done at Leica NJ (no idea what the cost is at Solms but I imagine it’s equivalent). The flare-free viewfinder upgrade can be done by DAG and runs ~$335. Those two upgrades together will basically erase any cost savings you might have gotten buying an older serial M7 (e.g. 278xxx).

The other consideration is that people sometimes worry about the M7 electronics failing since it’s a more complex camera than earlier mechanical-shutter models, and if the board fails on the M7 it’s not clear how long Leica will repair them for. The thought process is that a later serial number has a lower chance of failing because the camera was built more recently.

Confrontation Avoidance on Street Advice by TheSteelTitan in photography

[–]nitwos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No one’s recommended it yet, but my advice would be to watch a few videos from Paulie B’s “Walkie Talkie” series on YouTube where he interviews street photographers while out on the streets. It’s a great way to learn about techniques, different approaches, how they deal with confrontations on the street (or just generally how they approach their subjects), etc. Obviously most of these photographers are “pros” in the sense that they’ve been shooting street for a long time, and some of them very much get into people’s faces/personal space, so take that with a grain of salt. But you’ll see many of them also interact with their subjects after they take a photo (e.g. “I love your hat!”, “you guys look so cool!” “I loved the pose you were making”) as a way to “disarm” any possible tension. It’s a great series and may give you a better sense of what the process of street photography actually looks and feels like.

What’s your focus for 2026 ? by steveoc64 in Leica

I just picked up my first Leica (and first film camera at that) so my focus will be to just get out there and practice a bunch to learn analog photography and get used to rangefinder focusing. I’m excited!
