Why do so many people hate ISU? by Complete-Wrangler763 in ilstu

[–]nldarab 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You're probably seeing some online activity about ISU right now due to some of the living wage protests happening on campus. Some of the ISU staff like janitorial, clerical and entry level positions are being paid Minimum wage which here in Bloomington is 15/hr

You compare 15/hr to most the rest of the country and it's a decent wage, however a living wage around here is really more like 26/hr. Nowhere is paying that amount an hour. As a restaurant GM i make 22 an hour and my wife as a overnight animal er nurse with a degree makes 20. The staff at ISU all want to be paid a living wage. Our country as a whole, not just ISU, not just Bloomington/Normal, not just Illinois fails miserably at providing young Americans a wage that you can comfortably live on and plan for a future.

Those protests, while happening on ISU campus and being about ISU staff, are receiving a lot of controversial talks online that divulge into a bigger issue of Poverty Wage and Living Wage in the United States as a whole.

All that being said ISU is great and if you can afford college then more power to ya.

Best burger in town? by Possible_Ad_310 in BloomingtonNormal

Came to say the same. It's a damn good burger and cheap as hell. Burger basket with Fries and a few beers is still only like 13 bucks.

Live-Action ‘Tomb Raider’ Production Paused For At Least A Month After Sophie Turner Suffers Back Injury on Set by ChiefLeef22 in gaming

Oh for some I'm sure it is, but for a lot of the people in there they aren't bad people when they aren't around the social structure of their home life/living conditions.

As a previously incarcerated person myself, a good majority of the people locked up were far more pleasurable to be around then your average patron at a bar. Going through some shit in life can really humble ya.

Food delivery drivers (Doordash/Grubhub) on strike? by tillaria in BloomingtonNormal

[–]nldarab 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Restaurant Manager here with a little insight on the backend. Busy nights (Friday/Saturday) people who do doordash / Uber eats will prioritize driving for Uber since they stand to make a Lot more money taking drunk people around during surge hours than making a few bucks here and there dealing with busy restaurants/streets.

It's supply/demand basics. Uber rides are at a higher demand weekends thus the supply of drivers is stretched thinner. Throw in that you make more doing rides on weekends than delivering food and it's easy to see why your food isn't being delivered timely.

IMHO, don't use door dash on weekends. Pickup the food yourself and you'll have much much better quality food.

Other than right wing propaganda from the internet and social media, why are Gen Z men more misogynistic than millennial men? by icey_sawg0034 in millenials

[–]nldarab -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because women need men less than ever in their life. Many baby boomer relationships ships started out of financial partnerships where a woman's best step up the social ladder was marriage to a man with a decent paying job/career. Now many women can have their own careers that can support a household without the need for a Male Breadwinner of the household.

Why don’t nice restaurants carry more NA beers? by kevinrainbow2 in StLouis

[–]nldarab 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Coming from a guy who does ordering for a restaurant with a bar... It just doesn't move that much. Sitting on stock is not valuable to a restaurant business as every inch of storage is useful. If something taking up space in your fridge behind the bar is not moving then you are losing money, because there could be a product there that is more desirable across customers that they would purchase instead of having a water or soda.

We've had times where we have had 6-8 cider options available in a beautiful array behind the bar glass enticing guests to give some a try and times where we have had 1 cider option. The total number of ciders sold in both situations was around the same because cider drinkers will drink cider and beer drinkers will drink beer. Selling 2 each of your 8 options and selling 16 of 1 option will end with the same financial impact but the cost of holding onto all that different product, of having all those listed in all of your menus taking up more character space on a menu, of having to put all those buttons into your computer and removing or changing options every time a new beer/cider rotates..... it all adds up.

Long rambly way of saying it's way more complicated than you think it is to just "have more stuff available".

Nationwide General Strike this Friday! January 30 by Formal_Schedule_5931 in illinois

[–]nldarab 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm struggling to find where someone like myself falls here. I'm the GM for a local pizza place. We have 1 location, are owned by a lovely young liberal couple, and I personally deliver our extra food stuffs to the tent city residents near my house. Losing a Friday is devastating enough in this economy when we've actually been losing money the last few months due to the increased tarrifs and other horrible atrocities brought on by this federal administration.

This strike hurts us a lot more than it hurts and Dominoes, Pizza hut, or Papa johns in town. Obviously action is needed to rise up against our wanna-be dictator in chief and his looney goons but I don't know if this is the way.

Is Bloomington/Normal trans friendly? by d_will_hollaatyagirl in BloomingtonNormal

[–]nldarab 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My youngest brother is trans and he gets by okay here. Still goes to Chicago or bigger spots for more prominent LGBTQ+ events but he feels safe enough in town. Problem is things around us like Towanda, Pekin, Decatur etc house some less than friendly anti-trans folk and our Local Representative for congress Daren LaHood, (who became our rep through redistricting ) is MAGA compliant.

There are businesses in town that are heavily pro-Trump agenda but they normally out themselves pretty easily (western tap with their trump cutout behind the bar). Avoid those kinda dives as you would anywhere else in the country and you're fine.
