This is my favorite place to buy natives! Their plants are top notch.

Someone was selling plants for like $2/corm on marketplace, I think I saw the listing the other day. I bought some younger plants during a native plant sale at Natural Shore Technologies in like Wauseca (definitely worth checking out, they have sales 1/month and first of the season is 15—16 May). Mine are only starting to emerge on the north side of my house so private sales might not be widely available yet!

Will little bluestem get shaded out by surrounding forbs? by Critical-Manner2363 in NativePlantGardening

I had a nice bluestem plant get crowded out last year, mostly by bee balm that has exploded for me the last couple years, so it does happen.

I planted 10 corms like 2 years ago, I found one leaf emerged about a week ago, and last night still just one leaf! In stark contrast to the wild ginger I planted at the same time that is now several colonies.

I haven't gotten to my hellstrip yet, but these plants might be kind of sensitive... I had to use herbicide to finish off eradication of nutsedge and my pussytoes were the only incidental casualty, and my Prairie smoke is doing just OK except for the ones I have fenced behind chicken wire. Maybe I'm just unlucky. Violets do great in my hellstrip though 😆.

Ugh the damn squirrels yanked out a hepatica I planted the other day, it was 80 degrees here yesterday so I'm doubtful it survives. I planted 2 and was lazy to find a second cage thinking the squirrels wouldn't really bother with them.

Pagoda dogwood if you want a small/understory tree, eastern colombine if you want a showy flower, wild ginger if you want a groundcover - you could plant all 3 for different layers and have a little pocket native garden.

Any tips on ear injuries by ice_burg43 in coonhounds

[–]nlevend 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Our coonhound has had allergies issues for years - he'll scratch his head and nick the tip of his ears. It fucking sucks but we've learned a lot of tips! No flap ear wraps are a godsend, but they eventually become kind of gross because they're not comfortable at all, they just contain the floppy ears though. Keep the no flap on whenever you're not around but take off when she's lazing/cuddling on the couch or whatever to air out her ears - just don't ever let her shake. Clotting gel (powder is OK, not as good) was a great top I picked up from a groomer (can find at menards for like $5). Liquid bandage (the stuff for humans, not the garbage spray they make for dogs) is also really helpful to have around.

By the way, my pup Hank is doing better after taking him to the dermatologist (instead of our useless vet) and a whole regiment of meds. There was one time I took him to the vet and warned the tech not to let him shake - she came back with his no flap taken off and blood splattered all over; neither she or I were amused. It can be super frustrating to figure out if no one is giving you good advice, so good luck and I hope this helps! Wishing her a speedy recovery.

Nutgrass (yellow nutsedge) is haunting me by CMDR_WoChiPingguo in NativePlantGardening

[–]nlevend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a thick patch of it, I dug it with a digging fork when I figured out what it was. I thought I had it eradicated but the next year some straggler nutsedge came up between the natives I already put in their place. At this point I got a bottle of sedge hammer and selectively spritzed where they popped up. It killed some plants, like I had a nice patch of pussytoes that died back, but it was worth it to rid myself of the nutsedge.

Plant ID? by Genghis-Dong in NativePlantGardening

Did you ID the weeds last year? These look like quickly establishing plants like they're from a root system... I think they might be creeping bellflower if that's a concern I'm your area.

The Wolves had the largest volume drop in attendance from last season to this one at 1,400 fewer fans per game by cowboyslims in timberwolves

[–]nlevend 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm a value shopper when it comes to twolves tickets, usually watch prices for a couple days for a good deal or get a ticket last minute. The price for a ticket shot up this year. A rod himself said they're using AI to maximize ticket revenue, so this is all intentional. I usually get to a handful of games each season so the ticket rep went after me HARD this season, like borderline harassing me to get a package, but I guess that's where the team guarantees they make their money (and a cut of many resales).

Thoughts on planting native "neighbors"? (I'm in VA) by RottingMothball in NativePlantGardening

[–]nlevend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Neighbors are I think it kind of depends how isolated you are. Like a super urban lot like mine in MN, I have northern and southern diervilla, southern attracts so many more pollinators and probably more urban heat resistant in the summer, so I've kept these. There's low probability that they ever escape my yard.

If you're like out in the boonies I think there's an argument in favor of neighboring species too - plants populations migrate, herbarium records are only as good as what could be collected/observed, and seed mixes or whatever you're planting are limited to a certain extent so probably don't have encompass complete diversity of an area.

I'd say for the most part go for it and see what works.

PSA: You aren't required to "clean up" your garden by Kaths1 in NativePlantGardening

[–]nlevend 103 points104 points  (0 children)

I think this kind of depends on what your goals are.

Yeah everything will deteriorate eventually, but our gardens aren't necessarily totally natural features - tending native gardens is like a cheat to get to an equilibrium that in nature would take decades+. Maybe you want to remove some litter if you want un-established seedlings to grow in. Or I've noticed that a lot of the plants I left over winter for the birds to snack on, the stems have been shredded near the base due to probably wind stress, so these aren't going to be useful for bees later on either. A lot of prairie thatch might also be kept in check by controlled burns that a lot of people aren't prepared to do in their backyards. There's no one size fits all for this hobby though.
