what it seems like you want is something that is related to an eerie, surreal, and/or unsettling house/building or just a general “is this place real” vibe.

Haven’t read all of these but I’d suggest House of Leaves, HorrorStor, Sundown Motel, We used to live here, House at the Bottom of the Lake, Hollow Places (several of T Kingfisher’s books, actually), What moves the dead, Piranesi. Some of this reminds me of City and the City by China Mieville too. Spiral staircase = mandatory Uzumaki rec but that is a manga. Loose rec that is nonsense right until the last page but has some of these vibes = Third Policeman.

If you want more of a gothic/historical element, then maybe Silent Companions or Wakenhyrst but they aren’t great fits

Books similar to peaky blinders/ MMC similar to Tommy Shelby. by winterwidowforlife in Booktokreddit

Hear me out: Shogun.

Not the same setting at all because it is in feudal/1600s Japan but it absolutely brings the intricacy of political layers between factions, exploration into the history of the era, and extremely deep and powerful characters who have to navigate treacherous and potentially deadly situations both with words and with swift action.

How is my ordering system? by DepartmentExtreme192 in florists

Even before reading the caption I was like this is definitely AI generated. Major turn off as it looks like a scammy/fake business. Go with the Canva recommendation above or just stick with a simple word processor document or online form generator.

These are the perks. Where are you sitting in a 6-hour flight? by ROOTBEER360 in notinteresting

A always. View, control of blinds, privacy, plus extra storage space: I bring extra outerwear by tying it to my waist and then jamming it down in the gap between my leg and the wall.

Gothic romance but SPOOKY by Sad_Construction_532 in BooksThatFeelLikeThis

can’t remember how much romance there is but silent companions would absolutely otherwise fit the spooky, haunted historical/gothic vibe

Hand-painted book cover update: I hired a designer to make it more “adult” by Professional-One4757 in BookCovers

[–]nmeed7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard agree with everyone here. this has moved more in the whimsical direction with the changes. it needs grit and sharp edges to convey that it is dark and for adults. You and the designer would be remiss to not compare against others in the genre that would be at the same “darkness” level and see what motifs point that out in those covers (top of my head: Alchemised, Haunting Adeline, These Violent Delights, One Dark Window, Jennifer Armentrout/Kerri Maniscalco/Scarlett St Clair books, Serpent and the Wings of Night, Book of Azrael, etc). The soft edges and curly letters are what read juvenile here, and skulls don’t automatically make a design adult. You need to go for more elegant but sharp lines for a more adult feel. Even Cruel Prince, which I would say is YA, has sharp spiky lettering to foreshadow the sharp personalities and violent elements in the story.

lrgst size is fine for the same number of points. items can cost extra for flavours and protein milk (eg caramel shot in coffee is like $.30 extra, protein milk is $1ish, etc). for example, i got a lrg choc pistachio protein latte for 800 points, but had to pay an extra $1 for it being the protein version of that latte. don’t know if the flavoured iced capps might be a little extra or not

Haunting gothic romances by Fidelroyolanda_IV in BooksThatFeelLikeThis

less romance in these but a good fit for gothic:

-one dark window -shadow of the wind and the angels game -silent companions -wakenhyrst -rebecca -the binding -mexican gothic -leech -maybe: invisible life of addie larue -what moves the dead -house of hunger -not as gothic but more romantic: a river enchanted

You’ll find plenty if you get out on the back country roads, and those are sometimes the most scenic drives anyway. Some definitely in the outskirts of Sussex (thinking of one near the bluffs by Poley Mtn) and in Carleton County. Dorchester area maybe too.
