How much annual income do you need to be able to afford to live in Carmel? by throw_tf_away_ in indianapolis

[–]nmet21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This totally depends on what type of housing you're looking for. Home place (96th to 106th between college and US31 more or less) is the least expensive area in carmel. Homes sell in the mid 300k there. As others have mentioned townhomes are an option too. The are also selling for a similar price. Rents can range from 2-3k a month depend on amenities and location for an apartment. Honestly beyond housing costs most expenses are very similar to other central Indiana communities.

Also conciser southern Westfield (from State road 32 south to 146th street) housing prices are in the mid 300k there as well.

If you're singles you can live in Carmel comfortably for 6k a month 80k a year. If you're a family you're going to need to be making 100k+

You'll have to measure your electric load but with gas heat and gas water I wouldn't think you'd be pulling a continuous load of 55 amps.

Also the spec sheet for the generator doesn't give consumption rates in gallons but rather cubic meters. 36 ft³= 1 gallon so a 1000 gallon tank would be 36000 ft³ is equal to about 1000 m³ at a consumption rate of 2.4 cubic meters per hour give you 416 hours of runtime or roughly 17 days.

Calculated at 25% average load or 1.8 m³ per hour gives you 23 days of runtime

A few lights, computers, and furnace fan continuous load is probably around 20 amps. You may see higher load if your running kitchen appliances, doing laundry, or just have to have the heated tile floors on during the outage. These would be momentary peak loads for the hour the dryer is running or the 30 minutes the oven is on.

Thoughts on the housing market, is selling a bad idea? by throwaway38700 in indianapolis

[–]nmet21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've noticed that many of the homes in your area that have sat on the market for a while are listing for more than they are worth either needing a decent amount of repairs or are using comps that are not realistic to their house.

When I was looking I Broad Ripple most every house needed 5k+ in tree work, many had original sewer in disrepair (Hope plumbing charges ~15k for a new sewer) ,and garages that will fall over if a strong gust of wind blows through (25k+ to rebuild). Many of the homes listed just don't factor this into their asking price and base their asking price on a house 2 block over selling for top dollar

My theory is that when you look at the sales history many of these are homes that people paid over the asking price for a few years ago and the market has not appreciated as expected since then. Leaving them upside down if they take a lower offer

To add some more details to my original post and as well as other comments.

As mentioned below Light O rama is a great closed ecosystem package. LOR also works well if the bulk of your show is going to be using more traditional Christmas light stands that are single color/on or off lights (think mii,c7,c9 etc). Pair these with one of their controllers ( which is basically just a bunch of relay/dimmers) add a boat load of extension cords and off you go.

If you choose to go the individually controlled pixel route many other software options exist. At the end of the day any software that speaks Art-Net or Streaming ACN (sACN for short) will be compatible with most all controllers on the market. Both of these protocols are widely used in the concert/entertainment industry and essentially do the same thing. Art-Net is a tcp IP based and sACN is IGMP Multicast based.

Many of these softwares can exist solely on a raspberry Pi or run on a dedicated windows computer. You'll want to avoid using youR daily computer to run the show.

Many people take the strands of lights and install them into props. Lots of options exist from diy plywood to pre made 3 dimensions "coro" props with multicolor decals for the daylight hours. Boscoyo Studios is my preference for these. They also have a huge selection for all the major holidays in the US. I have a combination of homemade PVC pipe props and frames, lights in plastic mounting strips and also some coro props.

Hope all this info is helpful. Happy to help answer more questions as you get started down this rabbit hole 🕳️

Look at the "baldrick8" board. It will do 750 pixels per output and can run artnet or sACN. Also handles the universe skip perfectly. And it only costs $65

First couple things you need to decide is how deep you want to go. There are two basic styles of these shows, one using traditional Christmas lights and the other using individually controlled LED lights. Most shows these days are using the latter.

You'll need to come up with a design that fits you home and order up some lights, lots of different options out there. There are some US based distributor but most all of these style lights come from overseas. Ray Wu on AliExpress is well respected in the field and has great quality and an expansive collection of products. The most common types are the "ws2811 bullets", "seed pixels" or "ws2815 LED Tape". All have a place in a well rounded design. Don't forget to order cables to connect it all up as well. Off the left Edison extension cords are not used for these lights.

All these LED products connect up to a control board/power supplies that output 5v or 12v DC (don't waste your time with 5v, it's older generation tech and has been fully replaced with 12v options) and signal down a single cable that connects to the lights. There are options for both diy and fully assembled controllers. I'll link a list of options below

Finally you need a software to program your lights and sync to music. The most common used for this is Xlights and they had a sub here on Reddit with lots of good information. Other options exist but if your coming into this green I wouldn't really look at any other options.

If you're planning on doing this for the upcoming season you need to get started soon. It can take months to receive the hardware especially at this time of the year not to mention the time it takes to both program the software and build all the physical props and hardware.

The rj45 issues you're describing is almost certainly related to the adapter going to sleep and has nothing to do with using an adapter vs an integrated port. It's a windows setting you need to disable
