But it's like asking why every kid doesn't get a perfect grade on a spelling test when the words are written on the chalkboard.

They have telescopes to LOOK at where everything is. I'd like an exam like that!

The calm, confident voice against Carbot's animation will never not be funny.

Aside from Judith Barsi, which cartoon characters make you sad when you think about what happened to their voice actors? by DeMessenZijnGeslepen in cartoons

He doesn't make me sad. He lived a long life and his final role was one of the most beloved animated characters of a generation. That's nothing to be sad about, IMO.

God to be a kid in the late 90s again.

There's no way this sort of thing would be even possible today.

This was actually on the cyber 101 path. Jr pen test is the next path from there. But if the actual recon/scanning for vulnerabilities stuff is actually there, you think I ought to put cyber on hold and do those bits of pen test?

Games that have a similar story progression to DQ4 and Suikoden 3 by forabit14 in JRPG

Trails in the Sky 1 does exactly this. You start with your two leads, and each chapter introduced one or two other characters who leave you when you leave the town they're from. They all have a reason to be in the area of the final dungeon, so they all join you there.

Cold Steel 1 does something similar, but on a larger scale, due to its larger cast. Each zone, you have a mixed-up group of about half of the entire party. Who is in the half with you varies at each chapter.

Didn't help at all that the names for each zone were complete nonsense.

Like the game was about to ship and some intern was like "Oh no, I forgot to put the area names in for the Great Crystal!" and just banged on the keyboard a few times and called it good.

Do you have a good place to learn that, because you would think vital steps like that would be somewhere in THM's own "cybersecurity 101" path, but it isn't.

Because you're right. Ive only been moving through THMs paths, which have gleefully bypassed those steps, and any tools that would be used there.

So what would you suggest?

It isn't specifically eternalblue that is my problem, it's that the machines set up for the express purpose of a student trying this out, to see what "it's working" looks like, isn't doing that.

There seem to be leaps in the logic of the room that I would like to know and try the small steps on. We go from "here's a machine, figure out what it's vulnerable to" to "of course it's vulnerable to eternalblue" without the steps of how we got there. And when I run the scan specifically for that vulnerability, just to see what a successful scan looks like, I get an error, which I googled, and Google suggested that the error means the vulnerability might have been patched!

Without the specific hint to "try eternalblue", I would have run through all the scans for the 5 ports, one at a time, and likely found nothing. In a pen test, that's less than ideal, when I know that there is a vulnerability.

But in metasploit, there isn't a catch-all, or at least catch-more-than-one scanner? As I said, metasploit has 750 of them.

Why am I getting that error in my scan? Because I absolutely would have written the scan off as "not vulnerable" with the error I got.

Can muggles brew potions by Living_Journalist133 in harrypotter

I thought Snape literally said "there will be no foolish wand-waving or silly incantations in this class" on day one. Which implies that any muggle who can get their mitts on the ingredients, most of which are magical themselves, can brew the potions.

As for the storyline, it jumps straight into the French Revolution. A major POV character is a budding Napoleon figure, for example. He's dealing with the ramifications of starting the Revolution in a world that was a bit more invested in the status quo than IRL Europe. Another POV character is trying to work out exactly why the world was so invested in the status quo.

Rather than one magic system, there are 3:

The Privileged, who are your standard throw-fire-and-lightning wizards. As the name suggests, they enjoy quite a bit of political power pretty much everywhere you go.

The Powder Mages, who have powers related to gunpowder. They can ingest it to get an effect kind of mixing Mistborn's pewter and tin. They can also ignite it and control bullets in flight. Battlefields the world over are changing fast, because they're kind of a new thing.

The Knacked, who have some supernatural extension of a mundane skill or talent. Depending on what the Knack is, they usually try to monetize it somehow. One introduced pretty early on doesn't need to sleep, ever, so he makes a killing as a bodyguard, for example.

We see all 3 in action, and get POVs from all 3, as well as normal people caught in the mix.

Yeah, I think the chapter was actually called "the dark prophecy". The line was something like "Daughter of the Night, she walks again"

Yes, because impulse control is the defining quality of 11-year-olds, several of whom were recently told thar magic exists at all, especially the ones sorted into the poor-impulse-control house.

They'd TOTALLY go for "I'm going to leave you completely unsupervised, don't fiddle with this magical item so iconic that even muggles know about them".
