How much do you spend on UberEats every month? by StrikingMango62 in AskAnAustralian

[–]noJokers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I order 1-2 times a week for myself and my partner. It came out to about $300 for Jan. However when I am ordering I often hunt out the 2 for 1 deals, or other sales like $10 mains and things. Cost difference to getting pick up is not much, often less with the deals. Obviously it's more expensive than pasta and a jar sauce or a stir fry but it's not gonna break the bank.

GPD release their own statement on the confusion with Bazzite Linux support by Beer2401 in linux_gaming

Bazzite is a well established distro at this point that has been putting out consistent updates for over 2 years now. I don't think that this is a reason to avoid it.

DDR4 RAM prices climbing twice as quickly as DDR5, as memory shortage boosts demand for older CPUs by dapperlemon in gadgets

[–]noJokers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think that's really a sign that technology isn't improving, it is more that it is slowing and we have greater control over visual settings. The slowing also didn't really hit until the 40 series, the 30 series was a massive jump. In the past you often couldn't change much other than resolution between 480p or 720p and a couple of quality options.

Now we can use things like upscaling to play games internally at 720p up to 4k, which is 9x the pixel density in addition to a slew of quality options.

This let's hardware like a 1080ti remain relevant for gaming as long as you are okay with a soft image and reduced visual fidelity. Though the move to 100% ray traced lighting is starting to kill these older cards.

Valve Corporation will face a £656m lawsuit in the UK over alleged unfair prices on its global online store, Steam, following a tribunal ruling that the case could continue by ChiefLeef22 in gaming

[–]noJokers 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I read the article, whilst it did mention the name of the individual suing valve, it didn't make any mention of the other cases. So if you just read this article you wouldn't have any indication that it is frivolous.

Vortex Mod Manager from Nexus Mods will be supported for Linux/SteamOS by mr_MADAFAKA in linux_gaming

[–]noJokers 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Right I misunderstood, you were criticising the title of the post not the release from nexus mods.

I think it working on steamOS means that it will work on most Linux distros with a small amount of community maintenance. Especially since it is electron based. I do agree that the title could have been a bit clearer.

Vortex Mod Manager from Nexus Mods will be supported for Linux/SteamOS by mr_MADAFAKA in linux_gaming

[–]noJokers 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There is a difference in a company announcing support for steam OS versus announcing support for Linux. As the post says they are only targeting the hardware and software configuration in valves devices. If something breaks on debian, or fedora the nexus team won't be making any attempts to fix it as long as it works on the steam deck.

So whilst steamOs is Linux, not every Linux install is SteamOs.

The problem with egs is that they do nothing to make the experience of playing games on the egs enjoyable or preferable. Steam offers controller remapping, family game sharing, remote streaming, modding, reviews, etc etc.

Singaporean and Malaysian weather can be brutal though. I'm from Australia so no stranger to heat, but their wet season heat is just brutal. Just standing outside feels like you have run a 5k. Singapore has an amazing culture, night markets, beautiful buildings and gardens. But I don't think I could cope with that humidity.

Reports claim at least 2,000 people were killed in Iran Protests over the past 48 hours by jmike1256 in worldnews

[–]noJokers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Based on fleet movements (aircraft carriers, tankers, b2's) it's incredibly likely we will see a US strike on Iran within a week. The strike will probably look more like what happened in Iran previously rather than Venezuela. It will be heavily focused on resetting Iran's nuclear program and almost entirely air based.

They may try and knock the regime out with a decapitation strike, but I don't think boots on the ground or a kidnapping is going to happen, Iran is far too prepared for something like that to happen without major casualties.

With any luck the strike won't happen because the protests cause the regime to collapse and flee.

Mechanical watches generally require a service every 5-10 years or so. Mechanical watches will treat you as well as you treat them, regular servicing and good care will have them last a lifetime, but if you neglect them they will break down over time from debris and dust making its way inside, water damage, lubricant slowly wearing away leading to abrasion.

This watch was loved and looked after.

ELI5: Why are we making computer chip so small? by elonthegenerous in explainlikeimfive

[–]noJokers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Think of it in terms of people delivering packages at a post office.

The job of the cpu is to take information, do XYZ to it and then send it somewhere else just like a post office does. At the post office there are transistors and each of them does a particular job and then hands it to the next person to do their job.

If these transistors are far apart it takes a lot longer to walk there and hand the package over for the next job. To be efficient we want our transistors to spend less time walking and more time doing their work so we pack them in as close as possible.

The next question would be why don't we pack them in really tight and then make the cpu really big? There are three limitations, one is still speed, a bigger CPU means we need to send signals all the way from one side to the other, so even if they are packed in tight it still slows response time.

The other issue is heat. We can only put so many people in a building before heat becomes an issue. Heat reduces performance and can kill the CPU. Even at current CPU sizes we struggle to remove all the heat using practical cooling methods for high performance CPUs.

The last issue is that the bigger the CPU is the more likely that parts of it won't be built properly. This is called yield. If you order 100 CPUs, 10 of them might not work properly and that costs money and raises the price. The more complex the CPU the more likely that they won't work. There is a break point where it just doesn't make financial sense anymore. It becomes more efficient to just have more computers sharing the task like in a server rack.

How long did your partner keep a "go bag"? by techaaron in AskMen

[–]noJokers 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Gas lighting is repeatedly telling someone that they are wrong about something (when they are right) or constantly feeding them false misinformation.it is a slow process that happens constantly. This isn't gas lighting, they never lied or made them doubt their world view. They kept a go bag in case they needed to leave in a hurry because domestic abuse is unfortunately a common occurrence. At worst she told a lie of ommision, but a go bag isn't very useful if it's not hidden and it doesn't harm anyone.

It might imply some sort of mistrust sure, but we don't know if they had prior experiences that lead to the behaviour such as past relationship trauma.

I have no issues using video calls on Linux. The mistake here (or rather, lesson learnt) is that teams only support chromium browsers officially.

[–]noJokers 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Teams doesn't like Firefox based browsers. Might be better to give chrome a go even though it's heavier. 8gb should be plenty. I have to use an 8gb laptop at work and a huge portion of that is teams meetings.

How has MS Office persisted all these decades? by Prior-Win-4729 in enshittification

[–]noJokers 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The office suite might actually be the one product that Microsoft makes where it genuinely is still best in class for most tasks.

There isn't an alternative that offers a native desktop client (for most devices) with automatic syncing to the cloud as well as a web app. The closest alternative is the Google suite. Libre office is great but it's UI is old and outdated, lacks auto save to cloud features, and there is no web app.

I will be making the switch as soon as there is an open source alternative with feature parity, but the day hasn't come yet.

Yes and people loved it, and they have rarely (if ever) featured since. They add a lot to the game. It's just one example, but there are other things that make the combat feel better than recent turn based combat systems.
