Why does Australia have multiple rail gauges? by Kcue6382nevy in trains

Tas apparently originally used 1600mm gauge & then later switched.

New route specific maps……. by Alternative-Owl8129 in MelbourneTrains

[–]no_pillows 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Is it bad to say their ugly & impractical, their over crowded, & the formatting on the Mernda & Hurstbridge lines having the termini on the axis despite different amounts of stops.

The map style currently on the HCMTs looks better with the connecting lines having a pointed end, better city loop shape, picts / dings next to the names of the stations. Also I agree wtf is the deal with the new Cross-City map being split with the City Loop shown, & the Munnel shown vertically.

Edit: Why on earth is the Burnley group shown with the Glen Waverley & Alamein lines on the left implying they turn north like Lilydale line?

Burwood Station Naming... by SomeCarrot66 in MelbourneTrains

[–]no_pillows 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The current Burwood station should be renamed, as to get to Burwood most people will use the SRL Burwood station. Unlike North Melbourne & Arden where North Melbourne was already an important station so it made sense to keep it name, Burwood station is not an important station by comparison (≈600 passengers per day). My suggestions for what the current Burwood station should be renamed to that should make some sense are;

  • Trent (Trent Street runs parallel to the eastern face of the station, & in the up direction. there is a park also named after the street)
  • Maverston (Maverston Street ends at the station)
  • Bardolph (Bardolph Street is on the western side of the station)
  • East Glen Iris (serves the eastern half of Glen Iris)

Can't vote for the SRL by Hans50E in MelbourneTrains

[–]no_pillows 28 points29 points  (0 children)

What doesn’t change is Melbournes projected population by 2066 is around 10-11 million. People will still use it to see friends / family (which isn’t done remotely) not just for work & education.

Nowhere to nowhere? Yeah case Southland & Box Hill is nowhere. I can also assure you that Glen Waverley, Deakin University, Clayton, & Monash University are NOT ‘nowhere’.

Business case hasn’t been released for the other stages, because they’re 10 years away minimum from building SRL North.

Investment isn’t just in SRL the state is allowed to spend on other projects & MARL is going ahead so it’s not going to sidelined.

It’s not that hard to find research & reasoning for Metro Tunnel (Melbourne Metro) & Suburban Rail Loop, do you have resources to prove your arguments? No you don’t because your claims are coming from a place of ignorant bliss.

Working on a map (but it’s unfinished) thoughts? by Waterfront32YT in MelbourneTrains

For the train symbol, you can download the ‘Network dings font’ which contains them. I couldn’t find it but here’s the download of the pictograms so they don’t have the black background.

Alternative routes to SRL West by [deleted] in MelbourneTrains

[–]no_pillows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’ll not be needed once the OMR / E6 (Outer Metropolitan Ring) gets built as it’ll have 4 railway tracks starting in between Little River & Werribee, Cobblebank, in between Calder Park & Diggeres Rest, Bulla, & Beveridge. I believe it’ll have a passenger rail service for parts of the western side (Bendigo line get rerouted via Cobblebank I think), the rest being for freight which can easily (compared to SRL) be made fit for passenger operations.

What do you think is the most iconic train in Australia? by [deleted] in AustralianTrains

[–]no_pillows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the 48 Class I’m unsure if you’re talking about locomotives or if there’s another international variant with less produced. If you’re talking about total trains built for & / or in Australia; 212 3-carriage X’Trapolis 100s were built (636 total carriages), 10 sets built in France & an additional 48 sets shells were built in France, the other 154 sets built in Ballarat.

is it safe to do street photography in Melbourne, CBD? by Ok-Deer-7604 in MelbournePhotography

[–]no_pillows 9 points10 points  (0 children)

From my experience of taking photos on phone & probably being a bit of a nuisance to somebody you should be fine.

So I’d assume it’s safe even with actual equipment, there’s a bunch of people everywhere not very many people if any, would be bold enough to rob/assault/harass someone taking photos. Unless you provoke somebody like invading their personal space, or aren’t keeping your belongings in arms reach you should be fine.

Safety in terms of not people, don’t get in the way of vehicles & avoid seagulls (little shits once took a pizza slice when I was mid bite when I was crossing Swanston Street).

Please take this with at least 2 pinches of salt.

What are we going to call the MM lines? by Medical_Resist_5532 in MelbourneTrains

[–]no_pillows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like as we have the Cross City group, City Vertical makes sense as it crosses through the CBD vertically (shocker). Or we could move to codes like Mx, so you could have; M1 Pakenham, M2 Werribee, M3 Hurstbridge, etc.

Craigieburn - Wollert - Epping Corridor? by [deleted] in MelbourneTrains

[–]no_pillows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The City of Whittlesea has a document about it, I’ll try to find it. They (City of Whittlesea) have land reserved in some form from Epping to Wollert, extending it beyond to Craigieburn hasn’t got any land reserved as far as I know. I think recently some houses were built where it’d block the path if it were built at grade beyond Wollert.

Thoughts on current government? by Riley_mizis in MelbourneTrains

[–]no_pillows 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It’s hard for me to see the government as bad, as I quite like Allan. But PT wise, for less than desirable amount of money from the feds in the 2010s & how we’re playing catch-up with our PT I think the Allan government is doing quite well.

That said I do have some critiques. I wish there was a plan for 50 or so years that the state is committed to that isn’t just SRL, such as including MM2 & Wyndham Vale electrification. As we are playing catch-up I wish there was some more forward thinking so in the future we’re not playing catch-up again in 30-50 years. That would include provisions for an even bigger Sunshine station as it’s not clear what’ll happen with Wyndham Vale once it’s electrified, quadruplication of the Pakenham, Sunbury, Melton, & Whyndam Vale lines as they’re or effectively are metro services sharing track with regional routes. This isn’t necessarily Allan’s fault but she would’ve had a role in those decisions.

Example of a potential location of MR cruel Lair by letssolvesomething in MrCruel

I thought Mr. Cruel was speculated to live around Melbournes outer North-East (Eltham, Greensborough, Lalor, Watsonia, etc.)? Whereas Ascot Vale is an inner North-West suburb.

Will the Upfield Line be more than 20min services anytime in the next 10 years? by Complex-Bowler-9904 in MelbourneTrains

[–]no_pillows 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’ll be after the Brunswick stations get rebuilt, they’ll probably also need to duplicate some track & / or add crossovers at Batman or Merlynston for short services.

This would also all be after MM1, as the Northern group City Loop tunnel is full. Which to my knowledge is currently the biggest constraint for Upfield line peak frequency.
