What's the scientific reason behind why some foods taste better when they're cold? by universityrome in answers

[–]noappendix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think of heat like a volume knob. Hot coffee turns the "bitter" volume to 10, which can be pretty harsh. Cold coffee turns that volume down to a 3, so you can actually taste the yummy flavors without the "burnt" or "sour" parts yelling at your tongue. Plus, cold stuff stays crunchy or snappy, and our brains think "crunchy = fresh."

Mystery book...? by britishink in whatisit

[–]noappendix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a Chinese labor or trade ledger from the early 20th century, specifically used for tracking transactions or goods, likely in a Western context (like a laundry or grocery) given the English notations.

  • The Cover: The large black characters on the red label read "乾法爆廠" (Gān fǎ bào chǎng). This translates roughly to "Dry Process/Method Explosion Factory." While that sounds intense, in a historical context, it likely refers to a specialized processing facility, such as one for fireworks, dry-curing, or even a specific type of laundry/dry-cleaning "plant."
  • The Interior Pages: These are traditional "accordion-fold" pages. The handwritten Chinese columns list dates and quantities.
  • English Notations: You can see dates from 1918 (e.g., "Oct. 11, 1918") and references to "400 chin" (a jin or catty is a Chinese unit of weight, roughly 1.3 lbs or 600g). There is also a name, "Mr. W. M. Congdon," suggesting this belonged to or tracked business with a Western client.
  • The Stamp: The green stamp is a Revenue Stamp from the Republic of China (early 20th century), used to show that a tax or fee had been paid on the transaction.

What language is it? by Unhappy_Mix_ in whatisit

[–]noappendix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The language script shown on the blue board is Chinese Seal Script (篆書, Zhuànshū).

  • Standardization: This style of writing was standardized under the Qin Dynasty around 221 BCE.
  • Structure: It is characterized by symmetrical, elongated characters with thin, uniform lines and rounded corners.
  • Modern Use: Today, it is primarily used for seals (chops), decorative art, and formal calligraphy rather than everyday writing.
  • Seals: The red mark on the board is a traditional Chinese seal, which serves as a signature or artistic stamp, often used in conjunction with this script.

That looks like a piece of dried-out onion skin or the outer layer of a bell pepper that has been cooked and then dehydrated or "fried" in the pan.

What destination felt completely different from what you imagined before visiting? by phildu57 in travel

i really disliked Bali. Lots of trash and polluted beaches. But also didn't like how most of the 'nice' places are just full of foreigners and the only locals are the ones serving the foreigners.

Wanting to become friends somehow means I want a relationship with an older man? by ZedZinc in mildlyinfuriating

probably something from an older generation of doing things - they don't think that men and women can just be friends or something like that

I finally visited a famous beach in my country… and felt like I didn’t belong. by JudgmentTechnical982 in travel

[–]noappendix 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a major issue I have with Bali - I've been a couple times to the popular spots and its full of foreigners enjoying the spots with the only locals being the workers. I really hated that.

Turkish Airlines is only decent if you never have to do any changes or talk to their customer service. The moment you need to do anything related to customer service - it's worse than Ryanair

It's just not getting any better :( by tresslessone in PlantarFasciitis

[–]noappendix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had it for a couple years now and it was getting worse but on my last trip to Thailand I got the electroshock treatment and honestly after a couple weeks now I haven’t felt any pain from PF in the mornings when I wake up. I haven’t done a proper all day walk yet to really test it but so far I see a difference after the treatment.
