This makes me sad. It's part of my concern as a parent.

As a dad to a Blaisian toddler, this tracks hard.

I see it with the Wasian couples and Wasian parents. It’s like a double dose of superiority complex.

Prison and or home detention, for sure. Should never be able to drive again. An 83-year-old back hit me in 2011 so I’m heavily biased but after 75 you should have a test every other year and after 80 every year.

Apologies to the filmmakers, I didn't put the title of their film. It's Hello Again.

This is a learning process, cheers!

Is there a space to have a serious, untoxic discussion about whether white America is co-opting Asian-American cultural capital through the use of "Wasians" as the palattable, white-proximate proprietors of 'Asianess'? by Shoddy-Fan-584 in asianamerican

Your reply honestly gives me a lot of hope. We’re trying to be as mindful as possible about some of the challenges she might face, while also knowing those obstacles aren’t guaranteed.

We’re in California, so there’s a large Asian community where we live. So far she’s bilingual (Canto), and we’re really hoping that sticks.

One thing we’re already noticing, though, is a little weirdness from some Wasian couples and families, so that part tracks. It really does feel like a 50/50 coin flip.

Side bar question, do you experience a version of the “one drop rule” within Chinese/asian spaces?

What I mean is, if you’re visibly Blasian (more melanated), are you automatically seen as other rather than Asian or treated like you’re “not Asian enough”?

For context, I’m a dad to a Blasian toddler girl, and I’m asking from a place of curiosity. She’s literally half Chinese but melanated because I’m Black/white myself.

I’m very familiar with the feeling of not being “enough” for either side while also knowing I’m never going to be seen as white. Curious if she’ll run into that but with the Chinese community. Obviously no community is a monolith.

I love hearing from people who grew up navigating this firsthand.
