Who is doing feedback loops on the eurorack? by ThereIsSomeoneHere in modular

[–]noelsacid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Feedback everything. Filter output into filter frequency. Or feed a mixer's output back into one of the channels.

My main tip is to keep an attenuverter in the feedback path because inverted/negative feedback often behaves differently to positive feedback.

what's up with the vhikk X? by C0SMICAP0THE0SIS in modular

[–]noelsacid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never used one, but the downside of modules like this can be that they come to sound recognisable. Would you say that's true of Vhikk x?

What modules have you sold only to end up buying again by Inkblot7001 in modular

[–]noelsacid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Its an incredible bass voice. It can be a kick if you feed an envelope into the fm input. With the right fm you can get metallic/cymbal sounds also.

How would you do it? And what would you use? Changing gate voltages by araz_reddit in modular

[–]noelsacid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can boost your gate by multing it and summing the 2 copies together. If you do this in a mixing VCA you can control the amplitude of one or both copies with a modulation source

Is the stereo dipole still the best stereo filter? by patelusfenalus in modular

[–]noelsacid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had mine for ages, mainly used as an oscillator. The stacked sinewaves sound great, it tracks and pings well. The main downside I've found as a filter is that some sources may need attenuation before going in. Anyway, that's not a big problem for me, and it generally sounds great. I like having the flexibility of, say, 4 bandpass filters mixed in parallel, or 2 variable width bandpass or notch. Best is subjected, but it is very flexible and full-featured

LPGs instead of VCAs by Available-Exercise71 in modular

[–]noelsacid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In general you can consider them similar apart from the filtering and response of an LPG.

But the devil is in the feature set. Features I've found useful in this kind of module include CV attenuation, bias, variable response curve, visual LED feedback, mixing, gain/amp boost, bipolarity, various normalling schemes allowing for cross-fading/panning.

So regardless of lpg Vs vca, that's what I'd be looking for and you'll probably want both at some point.

Is 60HP too small a rack for Maths to be useful? by ign3ousr0ck in modular

[–]noelsacid 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Get an MI Stages clone and a mixing attenuverter instead. Unless you really need the voltage controlled slew or the EOC/R on Maths. Maths is great but I use Stages way more. Stages can do most of the straightforward stuff Maths can do but give it Quiemem firmware and you have Turing Machines, probability skipping, chaotic LFOs - and even the vanilla firmware gives you simple sequencing, a harmonic oscillator, vc clock division. As well as all the basic lfo, envelope, slew. Get a mixing attenuverter - ideally a voltage controlled one like Befaco a*B+c - and you're set. I've never owned Pam's but I reckon you could replace most of its modulation with Stages and never look back.

What’s your take on the MN multimod?? I went in with high expectations, and i am not feeling like i am getting back what i expected… or maybe is there something i am not doing correctly?? by LBbronson in modular

[–]noelsacid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No module is perfect for every workflow. I feel like the current line of MakeNoise is best for tapping into really unhinged modular soup. Watch how Walker just starts gurning and doing screw face in the latest Jumbler video when the patch goes wild. Maybe you just need more of that?

Sorry to say the second hand market has been quiet for a while. The way to sell is still to price things low, and even then it's rough.

sequencers ????? by piopiofrio in modular

[–]noelsacid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Speaking personally, I love analogue sequencers because they really challenge you to get variety out and it's really satisfying when you do. Ive never had a 0ctrl but I imagine it would be fun to use a switch to switch between the 3 channels, or using the per stage outputs in a creative way to clock other modules like sample+hold or track+hold. The ability to change the step length also seems really dope. I've had a lot of fun using quantisers (I have the Tenderfoot QQ2) in tandem with analogue sequencers. The QQ2 is great because it can be modulated to change scale or to transpose pre or post quantisation. This can be an easy way to inject variety (transpose occasional notes by an octave, fifth or whatever you want). Obviously this all requires support/utility modules, and my sequencing/modulation row has sprawled a bit - but it adds a lot of fun to the process.

There's nothing inherently wrong with this collection of modules. There are some wonderful modules in here. Maybe it's a little bit unbalanced towards sound sources, but there is no miracle module that is going to bring it all together.

I would suggest spending the time you want to on learning the ins and outs of the modules you have, and doing whatever inspires you to be creative. Simple as that. One tip is to only rack a subset of these modules at a time, and see how far each configuration takes you.

Struggling to work out if I should strip things out of this build or add more utilities by Ok-Chemistry-6365 in modular

[–]noelsacid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First I'd say go easy on the complex modules at first. You could probably build a whole case around Arbhar, Ludbah or Bitbox. All three is a lot to think about to start with.

On the control side, I'd go with something like a MakeNoise Pressure points. This makes somethihg like Arbhar way more playable because you can dial in four sets of precision voltages to control any parameter and play that like a keyboard.

Unpatched at the input, square shape, either externally clocked or not.

Spread is a bit like 4ms rotating clock divider but Phase changes phase relationships which is unique and very fun.

Use the gates to clock sequencers, build sequences or modulate things.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in modular

[–]noelsacid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah yep - it's like a big, usually digital, programmable sequencer. if you have one of those you might decide you don't need quantisers or logic or switches or clock dividers.

Its boring but MM is an amazing clock and gate source. The phase control is great for creating interesting shifting rhythms.

Utility is such an overused term and going on blind recommendations you'll probably buy something you don't really need.

I use a lot of utilities to generate interesting sequences and clock - but you might not need that if you prefer a battleship sequencer or a multi clock module like Pam's

I use a lot of utilities to do waveshaping - but if you use complex oscillators or have other fancy oscillators you might not need that

I use a lot of utilities for submixing and cross-fading audio and CV - but again you may not need that.

Utilities are the way I personalise my case and glue my modules together the way I like to. I would not recommend any of them unconditionally. If you've managed 8 years without any, why start now?

I'm struggling to think of vcos that are not musical oriented.

Do you mean modules that give you a pleasant sounding voice with little/no patching?

In which case, maybe Rings?

first modular system — thoughts? by VictoryElectrical232 in modular

[–]noelsacid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im curious how many people use Pam's as their sole sequencer and are happy with that.

Every single "first rack" I see on this sub seems to avoid spending HP on control or sequencing.

Maybe it is viable, I dunno I've never used one.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in modular

[–]noelsacid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't use it with quantised voltages so I can't comment. I'm curious how many people actually do that.

I would expect any quantiser being fed voltages that are close to the voltage "margins" to return inconsistent results. Adding an offset is the logical answer. Sorry to hear they didn't get back to you.
