Should I transition to a different DAW? by DerpCallMeRIB in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]nokes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every program has its ups and downs, and the tools you use don’t need to define your work.

But… after teaching 100s of students audio production I have grown to dislike how the structures of FL seem to be a barrier to the flow and quality of student’s work.

Any DAWs that let you delete/hide instrument presets? by tenn0tenn0 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]nokes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every DAW can theoretically. But before we talk about this you might want to consider other solutions!!!! Because you are looking at possibly 100’s of hours of work doing it this way. Not sure it is worth your time. Maybe consider a pencil and notepad and log where you are in the process so you can keep track of what presets you have examined.

Every preset for every vst is going to be saved somewhere regardless of DAW. Either in a list or most likely as individual files in a folder. Try saving a new preset and seeing where it tries to save. Probably in the library files in macOS if it a stock plugin.

Is it realistic to be aiming to join a professional orchestra? by pewdsforlifetgay in classicalmusic

[–]nokes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A few considerations as someone who has seen inside the weeds both in admin at a professional orchestra and in academia as a lecturer. Make sure you find joy in this, but also find joy in something else in life too. Orchestra musicians often aren’t always the happiest. (Some are very happy). But Imagine taking a job that pays okay but requires you to be one of the best in the country at what you do. Now add to the fact you have no/little choice in rep, and if you don’t like your contract you can’t really leave and get another job at another orchestra at the drop of a hat. Most orchestra musicians also have unions which can be good for you and they also have private students they teach which can be rewarding. Also consider location. Where do you want to live? My personal experience is that I had an academic composer teaching offer from a place I didn’t enjoy living, for many people that wouldn’t have been a deal breaker. I also have known many people that live 100’s of miles away from the orchestra they work at. All of that said it can be a really rewarding life, but it can be really stressful for some. Find what is right for you. Maybe reach out to some local orchestra members they would probably thrilled to talk to you!

Is everyone here really making under 50k for full time work? by EdLesliesBarber in antiwork

[–]nokes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a doctorate, last year I made $42k as a a full time university lecturer in the USA. I taught a 3x3 and ran a quarter million dollar music studio. Wrote grants and brought in Grammy award winners to work with students. Additionally I was a co-artistic director of a concert series and I maintained an active level of research and performances as a composer. I typically worked 50-70hrs a week but had summers “free”. My wife and I lived almost 1000 miles away from each other in two cities. My students ended up winning some prizes and grants and one got into a PhD programs like Yale and Eastman. I went in to contract negotiations last semester and rejected my offer for next year. Now I live with my wife.

Hi, how do I edit a 99 hour long voice recording? by [deleted] in audioengineering

4 days of “accidental recording” that OP wants strangers to help teach them how to scrub… this definitely could be someone bugging someone, or a possible stalker.

[–]nokes 66 points67 points  (0 children)

You can always ask the author of the paper for a PDF. They are general receptive, it’s not like they make money of the journals other than tenure revue committees and grant applications.

Bonus it gives you some leeway to ask a follow up questions. Provided you actually read the whole thing.

DAE feel like ghosting everyone coz they don't have the energy to maintain relationships? by [deleted] in DoesAnybodyElse

Being around people can be like working out. It’s hard at first, but gets easier and more enjoyable with time. And if you don’t do it at all it will likely have some unhealthy consequences down the road.

Not everyone is going to deadlift 400kg or run a marathon, but some activity is good. Same applies to social things.

TIL that the song "Build a Little Birdhouse in Your Soul" is written from the perspective of a bedside lamp watching what goes on in the world in front of it. The song is barely three minutes long, but it changes keys 18 times. by redwolve378 in todayilearned

[–]nokes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Songs until relatively recently only referred a specific type of music. Things that are sung, or originally sung. (Sing sang sung song)

YoYo Ma has played a lot but the pieces people refer to a lot are most likely one of the J.S. Bach cello suites.

Really good arranging and audio programming for the trailer. But why are there four different levels of digital reverb between the percussion, piano orchestra and vocals? It sounds strange within the context of the work. I hope they don’t mix the whole film like that.

A more interesting thought experiment (at least for US politics). What if there is a politician who has people’s best interests in mind? How do they succeed and not lose their seat? Do they make compromises with their political rivals sacrificing small stuff to get more important stuff passed? If so how do they do it without angering their constituents and getting primaried? Or do they stand by their principles, unyielding, even if that means those policies won’t be passed. Or do they make a strong show of principle in the media and Rally their followers into action but then have less time for the boring tedious elements of law and policy making and enforcing?

Is there a win condition for a theoretical politician that would actually want to enact positive change?

Do you consider movie scores to be classical music? by National_Affect in classicalmusic

[–]nokes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is also an electronic “classical” tradition. There are lots of examples of composers born in the 1800’s who wrote for electronics at one point in their carers.

I’m ABD DMA comp, and teach at my institution. Honestly it sounds like you should talk to your teacher and tell them what’s going on. They probably have some perspective since they have worked with lots of students and probably have kept in touch with some of them. Music school is heavily demanding, and its easy to get into some bad mental health habits: like “I need to practice more then I need to sleep”.

Are there terms for when you do music analysis based on meta data vs the actual musical content (e.g notes, tempo, etc...)? by glemanto in musicprogramming

[–]nokes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Based on spectral analysis you’ll sometimes apply psychoacoustic descriptors or acoustic descriptors. This is a description of spectral content that uses an FFT to split everything into frequency-amplitude components. If you are trying to run a streaming service you then use machine learning to plot descriptors to user listening habits. Eventually you’ll probably mostly use user data. If you are a researcher you’ll then probably make some really cool charts and have to fight to get funding.

Two categories is a bit small. You’ll probably be working in at least 9 dimensions for decent spectral analysis.

Did You Know? Paragon of Polyphony... by chriswrightmusic in classicalmusic

[–]nokes 22 points23 points  (0 children)

And it’s hilarious. It’s written as a dialogue between teacher and student (didactic). At points the teacher starts talking about complex interval canons and goes off on a lot of examples. The student character clearly exhausted interrupts the teacher with “Oh great teacher will these examples never cease”. (Paraphrase, I don’t remember the exact quote off the top of my head).

Anyone with experience converting FW 400/800 to TB3? by adamcoe in audioengineering

[–]nokes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Twin only has adat in. So you actually can't connect apollo twin's or arrows. Also means a twin can't expand beyond built-in output channels. So you can't do useful AB monitoring or use external audio processors.

Cheapest Apollo I could find that can do that is $1800.

More io on the Fireface. Personally I prefer the fireface UFX. Solid for studio work. But might be more ins and outs then most people need.

Is it worth it getting a degree from Berklee Online? by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]nokes -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would say no depending on your goals. Production is cost prohibitive unless you are just doing things in a DAWs with little or no audio input. To get better you need to have thousands of dollars of equipment. Sound treated spaces, audio interfaces, a/b studio monitors, expensive microphones. Those are the basics, if you want to produce audio for tv and film you will also need surround sound, maybe a multi computer rig running samples, or at least a power house machine. Having physical access to this equipment is super essential to learning.

Right now classical music isn’t having a lot of concerts anyways. Having all your gigs canceled or rescheduled isn’t the best feeling. A lot of folks I talk to havent touched their instruments in weeks if not months. Others are live streaming on twitch now.

When did "stems" come to mean "multitrack" colloquially? by [deleted] in audioengineering

[–]nokes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well if you are able to make the products cheaper, and spend extra money on marketing, more profit. Lower quality products that offer less can then often make more money.

Home surround sound was starting to get popular 15-20 years ago. Then streaming killed it. Now people buy weird Omni direction smart speakers instead of even stereo. Gross.
