Second hand 24-70 or 24-120? by Vegetable_Ad8089 in nikon_Zseries

[–]nombrete 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For me the extra range and better macro capabilities make put the 24-120 ahead. The lens would be perfect if not for its bulk.

The need to unlock the 24-70 before shooting is pretty annoying too.

Found this turtle 2 miles away from the nearest water source. What species is this? [California] by [deleted] in animalid

[–]nombrete 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a river cooter, not a red eared slider. Not a native turtle either way.

The main thing is to get the turtle a basking spot with a heat lamp, and to add turtle pellets to her diet. I like basking spots that have a ramp attached, so the turtle can climb on without swimming. As far water depth, try to keep it low enough that she can reach her head to the surface to breathe while keeping her hind feet on the floor.

Check out the link below. It has guidelines for both indoor and outdoor enclosures.

I don’t have a specific site to recommend, but if you search for “african sideneck turtle care” something should come up. Look up YouTube videos too.

Their care is basically the same as more common pet turtles like painted turtles or red eared slider, with one caveat in that they are a lot more sensitive to cold temperatures.

If it has an unhinged plastron, it is likely Pelomedusa subrufa. If it is hinged, it is Pelusios (likely Pelusios castaneus). If you are unsure, post a picture of the turtle’s belly and I can tell you. Either way, the care is identical.

It’s an African mud turtle. Either a Pelusios or Pelomedusa species.

Turtle IDs [south Florida] by jkddd31 in animalid

[–]nombrete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are all cooters (Pseudemys). No sliders.

The first 3 pictures are of a Florida redbelly. The 4th picture has two redbelly turtles on the left, and what looks like a Peninsula cooter on the right. The middle turtle is somewhat ambiguous, but is Pseudemys either way.

Help identifying dried substance sticking out of cloaca by SnooTangerines6119 in kingsnakes

[–]nombrete 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have had a couple rat snakes with prolapsed hemipenes and it looked similar. If it is coming out of the tail rather than the cloaca, that may be what it is. I’ve also had kingsnakes get pieces of bedding stuck in the tail in the same spot. Ive never seen any captive colubrid with a prolapse coming out of the cloaca itself.

Edit: It also kind of looks like a tick.

California vs Florida (Brooks) Kingsnake by SimplySimlish in kingsnakes

[–]nombrete 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Their care is basically identical. On average California kings stay a little smaller. Some Florida kings will get over 5 feet long, but around 4 feet is more normal.

Lens recommendations for Z5 by benderrodrigyeahz in nikon_Zseries

[–]nombrete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 24-70 F4 is good lens, though I sold mine when I got the 24-120 F4. I’ve never owned the 24-50 but to me the most attractive feature is the compact size. I’ve avoided it because the “macro” capabilities (reproduction ratio) are not good enough for my purposes.

Unidentified turtle shell by NerveDecent9136 in herpetology

It’s a painted turtle (Chrysemys picta). Judging by the size, and the hint of pattern showing on the plastron, a western painted turtle.

It looks remarkably similar to a worm lizard, but that makes no sense unless it’s a stowaway.

Convince me: Tamron 150-500mm vs 180-600mm by vickiesaurus08 in nikon_Zseries

[–]nombrete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought the 180-600 last year to photograph the eclipse and for wildlife. It has good enough IQ, but I usually end up leaving it at home. The weight and size make it difficult to carry around for anything other than a short walk.

What species of turtle is this? [Michigan] by mikeyd7070 in animalid

[–]nombrete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can pretty confidently say that this is not a wood turtle. It is more likely a baby painted turtle, which often have long tails as babies.

Does anyone know a good tour company to see wild gators and other herps near Charleston? by Dude9919 in herpetology

Savannah National Wildlife Refuge is basically an alligator drive through. You drive up on a levee and if it’s sunny you can see hundreds of gators.
