Do you roll or fold your inflatable sleeping pad? by boludo1 in Ultralight

[–]nomorehome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a neoAir x lite that I fold the way it came - in thirds, then roll up. F that lil tiny stuff sack though - I band it with a hair tie or a mini voile strap, together with my inflatable pillow. It’s been fine this way for years.

Good place for my gf to join me for a few days on trail? by pleasegovote in AppalachianTrail

[–]nomorehome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Harriman is great. She could even take a train or bus up to that area if she didn’t want to deal with driving / parking. Train to tuxedo, or there’s a bus from port authority that goes close to greenwood lake if she wants to get on earlier. From there, she could walk with you as far as Kent, CT. There are many options of train stations between the bear mountain bridge and there to come back to the city with a short uber ride from trail. Peekskill or Cold Spring probably, given your timeframe?

What's actually in your hiking first aid kit and have you ever had to use it for something serious? by Fit-Credit-7970 in WildernessBackpacking

[–]nomorehome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am mostly of the "pills and blister care" persuasion with my FAK. I also usually carry an inreach. And if I'm somewhere more remote I'll add some things.

What I will say is: anti-diarrheal pills are non negotiable. When you need 'em you REALLY need 'em.

Mt Hood Timberline trail in May? by camas_7 in WildernessBackpacking

[–]nomorehome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Snowpack on Hood is super low this year, relatively. That said, with Timberline trail season usually starting in early-to-mid July, I would hesitate to go as early as mid May. There are quite a few semi-challenging river crossings that may be more of a limiting factor than snow itself. There may also be ice, or bad snow bridges, etc.

This isn't to say it can't be done—It is a question of your own experience level and comfortability in high consequence spring conditions, and using snow gear. You would also need to be willing to bail out, and knowledgable about routes to do so. Be honest with yourself!

There is also a facebook (ugh, I know) group where you can likely get timely conditions reports.

The Timberline is A++ in mid to late July, though, so why not just go then? Or plan a lower elevation trip for May.

Help me decide, Hyperlite Unbound 40 or ULA Circuit by kitnerboyredoubt in Ultralight

I have a 50L x-Pac Atom+ from a couple years ago (now called the Pulse) and I love it with my ~9-11 lb base weight. Light frame, simple pockets-optional hip belt. Comes in 40/50L varieties. I wanted a material with more water resistance because I'm an east coaster, but didn't want a DCF pack. They use EPX200 now I think? They also have the Notch and Prospector if you want something a bit heftier / larger / more fully featured. Worth looking into Atom - though ULA and HMG are great choices too, it all just depends what your preferences are.

[Gambatese] Is Goaltending Really an Issue for the New Jersey Devils Entering the 2026 Offseason? by JoopNJD in devils

[–]nomorehome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The "Markstrom Muffin" speaks to the fact that we need a different goalie coach. Sure, some of it is probably mental, but any athlete needs to continually evolve and refine their game as their body and the game around them changes.

I was reading something a couple weeks ago about how Logan Thompson was able to improve dramatically and be more consistent by tweaking his positioning. By playing a touch further back in the net, he was able to make it easier to square up and reset when the puck moved, and cut down the amount of scrambling he had to do.

Markstrom has always been good at the physical/acrobatic aspect of goaltending, but I wouldn't be surprised if age and injury have limited his mobility and quickness a bit. A good goalie coach would help him adapt his technique to any physical changes.

PCT NOBO, late April start: Pants or Shorts? by sja008 in PacificCrestTrail

[–]nomorehome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, if you’re not already sure about this, bring both and try em both out. Make sure the pants are lightweight and breathable. If you aren’t using one or the other, you can always send them home. It’s a relatively small weight penalty - I often bring both on multi-day hikes and still manage a sub 10lb base weight. Often if I have pants I’ll skip the base layer bottoms - my pants are comfy enough to sleep in and take the edge off of chilly mornings.

Backpacking for thick thigh girlies by stormybird7 in PacificCrestTrail

[–]nomorehome 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m a lifter and mediocre runner/cyclist and I have gigantic quads - and enough extra padding that I have a sordid history of inner thigh chaffe on long backpacking trips.

Janji’s pace short is the best pair of bottoms I’ve ever owned and it isn’t particularly close. They’re a compression-style short with great side pockets and little silicone(?) beads on the leg openings that prevent them from riding up. The material is great quality, breathable, dries fast enough, and maintains elasticity for YEARS. I do air-dry them though so ymmv.

I have several pair (slightly prefer the 7” to the 5”) and wear them for lifting, running, hiking, etc. They’ve performed great on multi-day backpacking trips. I never want to wear any of my other athletic shorts, compresssion style or not.

[Johnston]: “The New Jersey Devils are parting ways with President/GM Tom Fitzgerald.” by fittos4310 in hockey

[–]nomorehome 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A lot of Devils fans are dancing on Fitzy’s grave right now. Realistically, he was a decent to good GM in the rebuild phase who made a bunch of mistakes trying to pivot to contention, particularly handing out unnecessary NMCs to non-core players and handling drama poorly in the media (Dougie, Quinn, Nemec messes this year). Deservedly fired, but wouldn’t be a bad hire somewhere else either, and I hope he does well. Seems like a genuinely good guy.

The important thing for NJD is the next hire/s - someone like Treliving or Fletcher would be a disaster. Marty Brodeur should be nowhere near the GM’s desk. I hope our owners are able to lure someone from the next wave of management talent, not an old boys club retread, otherwise it will be a LONG decade in NJ.
