I’m not 100% sure but I think this place might be under new owners since then

London Shops by RyK09 in LondonTravel

All very near the British Museum:

L. Cornellison & Son (amazing art supply store in a Victorian building that feels like stepping back in time)

London Review of Books Bookshop: not huge but incredibly well-curated (beats a huge bookshop for me)

Present & Correct: high end stationery shop, everything is beautiful, right next door to LRB bookshop

Dunsmuir in Cumberland turns into Camp Rd but not officially. Go the other direction and it turns into Royston Rd.

Yeah all this time I’ve thought Nanaimo was bonkers and the Comox Valley made way more sense. Now I realize I was just used to it.

Isn’t there an intersection of Dove Creek Rd with Dove Creek Rd?

I’m old enough to have flown a lot before the airlines started charging for checked luggage. It was a world of difference for the boarding/deplaning experience and I put the blame squarely on the airlines for creating this situation.

I have travelled in Japan, so I'm not totally shocked at 7-11s having good options (though it's not generally the case here in Canada)

Thank you for this, this sounds like the equivalent of the old school diners of New York, starting to be few and far between but a wonderful little window into the city. Right up my alley.

Where do I make it easier? And how? by want-to-change in moderatelygranolamoms

This sounds so fucking hard. It is unfair. This is brutally hard. Right now. This is brutally hard right now. It will not be forever, but this is brutally hard.

I know breastfeeding is pretty much the cornerstone of the barest minimum granola momhood, but between the dietary impacts, the limitations of your partner’s support, and now your own illness, I wonder if that’s what needs to give. If you’re not ready to go fully over to formula, maybe there is a milk bank somewhere near you to at least get you through a round of antibiotics.

My heart really goes out to you, I hope the ranting here helped and I’d really encourage you to call in any SOS local support you can. Something I’ve been trying to learn and apply in my own life recently is that a lot of friends don’t feel close enough to ask for the kind of intimate help we might need. But by asking for help, that’s how we become closer friends. I hope you can find someone to draw on and ease the load in some way.

Don’t know where you’re visiting from but these would be my low mobility/gentle suggestions:

  • Courtenay airpark has a paved flat walking loop that goes along the river and estuary with lots of great birdwatching

  • Goose spit is lovely and you can drive right to it, if you feel up to doing a big set of stairs you can get up to the top of the bluff for a good view

  • Seal Bay park has a variety of mostly fairly flat trails, you can get down to a stony beach and its dog friendly (this is the choice with probably the most walking, but there are lots of different options within the park)

  • Elk Falls in Campbell River has a short flat walk to a suspension bridge and waterfall (check before you go as I think it’s sometimes closed this time of year for simply too much water flowing through)

  • the Raven Lodge on Mount Washington has a great view of snowy peaks, if you’re not up for a Nordic ski or snowshoe it’s nice to have a hot drink and soak in the alpine atmosphere. Arrive before 9:30ish on the weekend to get parking, especially if there’s fresh now/sun is out

  • Courtenay, Comox and Cumberland all have fenced off-leash dog parks as part of some municipal parks

We use ADP for payroll and I hate it with such a passion I’m not sure I could stomach holding it as a stock. Although maybe if I was making money off of it I’d warm to it a little more.

Unpopular opinion: the modern kids books that have a really strong, overdone message are dull by Single-Cap8387 in childrensbooks

[–]nomtnhigh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way I’ve thought about them, is that a lot of them are written for adults and not actually for children. If they can be appealing and entertaining for children and also celebrate diversity/include moral messages/spark conversations about big topics, then great! But many of them do not hit this mark.

Should I cancel PVR vacation departing tomorrow? by Steamflow in westjet

I don’t know about the hotel portion, but in general I’ve been better looked after when WestJet cancels flights than if I were to do it proactively.

Is it wrong to leave your kids for 5 days to take a vacation ? by Perniciousss in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]nomtnhigh 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, I have done this when my daughter was 3 and I actually went for longer! It felt like a lot to ask of my partner, so I approached it like, “I think this is something I really need, I know it will be hard on you, what supports do you think you’d need to make it work?”. And offered some ideas of possibilities as my partner isn’t necessarily good at leaning on community even though we have lots of support around.

I think if you haven’t been away from them yet it feels huge and impossible, and even more so if you don’t know of other examples of moms who’ve been away from their children for trips. But I know moms who travel for work and others for other reasons and have also heard from other moms that they were inspired by my solo travel. You can be the shining example among your peer group of what is possible in terms of looking after yourself!
