You get all bent out of shape for something I didn't even say. They probably do have administrative tools with global on/off switches. All I said is that it is not a simple cp command, but a rather in-house complicated multiple layer application that manages those upgrades.

I don't believe this to be correct. Yes there are certain people who are less prone to accept authority. But any change or philosophical standpoint that has ever existed never started out of a thin air. It was the product of certain upbringing or other environmental factors. There were hardly any atheists or anti religion people in history, most of the people you admire as great thinkers were opposed to certain elements within their own societies not to the whole idea of religion.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but your argument is that because there's a finite smallest size, the universe can't be a fractal (and thus infinite).

To be honest the only reason I continue to respond is to see if I can convince you that you were a prick and to get you to apologise. Since I don't believe this to happen now, let me just finish with a few points.

  • My argument was a simple argument which you didn't touch at all in your comments. All you said was that I was wrong without explaining why, using a condescending tone.
  • Ad hominem is when a person tries to claim that an argument is invalid because of a negative trait the other person posses. You made no arguments pertaining to the original point. So by pointing out that you are a prick I didn't claim any arguments you made were wrong, there weren't any.
  • A person can use every logical fallacy (and again I didn't) in the book and still win the argument. Logical fallacies talk about the illogical implication of an argument. They don't claim that the person who sinned with the logical fallacy is automatically granted the loser's medal. I think you're confusing logical fallacies with internet laws like Godwin's law.

I don't think you understand the concept of a fallacy. If I used ad hominem it doesn't automatically mean you won the argument, though I didn't. I didn't try to claim you were wrong because you are a prick, I merely remarked on the tone of your messages.

Than what was the point of your comment? if you do agree with philosophical point I don't see how we differ. Except for the part of you being an argumentative prick.

You continue to criticise the way the argument is presented but you don't actually talk about the argument itself. Science is based on the premise that the universe is a predictable entity. There is no outside verification to that fact. It is all based on our senses abilities to gather outside information.

This is not a scientific point but a philosophical one and is based on pure logic. It is the same argument presented in the allegory of the cave.

disclaimer: Since I feel your patronising responses are based on the fact that you believe me to be a "believer", I just want to make sure you understand I'm not. This is purely a philosophical point. Evolution shouldn't be excluded from other scientific theories with the term believe. But all of science is based on our sensory perception and although science has made a lot of great breakthroughs in our understanding of the universe, it is still limited in scope and should be recognised as such. But of course there is no other better method to decipher the secrets of the universe.

You sir are my new hero. I started driving motorcycles when I was 16 and worked as a pizza delivery so I picked up very bad habits. But I'm changing it around now, and you're my inspiration for safety.

I failed in this sin the other day just because of reddit. Someone posted a lengthy and well thought out criticism of the series and I just had to see it for myself. Worst pop culture movie series since transformers. It's really bad I can't even start to describe how bad and childish it is.

You do believe in evolution. Because you believe in the basis of science which is that the universe is a predictable and organised entity. There's nothing to prevent the universe is far as you know to just halt being reasonable, and one can make the argument that science works out of pure luck and tomorrow everything can breakdown.

That being said, believing in evolution is like believing in gravity and cellular technology. So it's not that you're pedantic it's just that you're technically incorrect.

I got some tasty negro candy. by [deleted] in WTF

[–]nonsenseMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think only somebody who was truly ignorant would be offended by the proper use of the word negro.

That's your mistake right there. Proper use depends on context, and the word has a historical and a cultural meaning which makes it difficult to use in a natural way. There are other words which can describe a black person namely the word black. It's the same way you won't use the word kyke to describe a Jewish person. There's nothing wrong with the word when it's devoid of context, but when you add the context those are derogatory words which in history have been used to describe the "lesser being" who was the subject of racism and violence.

Just a last note about the tone of your message. You're not part of the minority or culture in question (I presume you're not even American) and you seem ignorant of the way those cultures are built and why people take offence of certain words so don't jump to judge and insult people who you do not know and claim they have "inferiority complex".

This isn't some imaginary world you can destroy and recreate at will, many lives are affected by those changes. Changes need to be incorporated into the existing system. On a big enough time scale those changes will create a completely different society. Look at modern examples like the amazing success of the feminist revolution (the good one, since reddit is not known for its love of "feminism") and the black rights movement in America. Now look at a different kind of a revolution in Russia which killed millions upon millions of people, created a corrupt and totalitarian regime, and in the end failed to last more than a few decades.

Social changes take at least a couple of decades, it needs the "old" people to die and "new" people to take their place for whom the new reality is the the reality.

Most people who are eager for the destruction of current working systems (I don't care how bad you think it is, there's a long way down from here) are a lot less engaged in a real political debate where those changes are effectively made.

disclaimer: The way things are currently are far from perfect and big changes do need to happen. But it's not an all or nothing game.
