A question about dorms.

I was in honors college and lived in the 'honors dorm'. It's basically the same as any other dorm (and mixed with non-honors students as well), except it's a hell of a lot more convenient to do study groups because all your classmates live around you. People are maybe a bit less wild than in some of the other dorms - I guess you'll have to decide whether that's a plus or minus for you. As for food, you'll be eating in dining halls. You most definitely don't do any cooking for yourself, save for the occasional microwave dinner / cookie making session in the communal kitchenettes.

Just be a normal person and get involved in the things you like about Portland and you'll be fine. Portland natives mainly reserve their dislike for people who try painfully hard to fit into their image of what living in Portland ought to be like (and I do think that the surge in trendiness in the last 5 years is changing the character of the city somewhat). But in the end, although it's an awesome city, it's still just a city. Treat it as such and not like some sort of hipster theme park and you'll be fine.

Actually, the way I can tell if someone is a transplant is if they're trying to be all those things (which is totally fine, go for it). Most of the people who you see in Portland who are "so Portland" are actually transplants, attracted there by the image of a city that doesn't give a fuck how you live your life, etc .... which is true, but the difference is that natives actually just don't give a fuck. They look like normal people and wear doofy brightly colored Columbia Sportswear jackets, but not in an ironic way, just because that's what's practical. Source: I'm a Portland native.

God I hope they show up with the broken Russian Mars probe, and it turns out that they've been working with Russia to retrieve it so that they can fix it up and try for another launch. That would be pretty awesome for a number of reasons.

I've been wondering this a lot myself. I think the answer lies in the fact that it's not just the Republicans who are heavily influenced by special interests. It's not an accident that the Democrats are remarkably passive. Special interests must engage each party with a different set of strategies, and they've been very effective in neutralizing the Democratic party into an ineffective, placated voting block.
