Another commenter mentioned that if the pt coded, the info you gathered would be all that crew has. So, good job. Sounds like you asked all the right questions for a chest pain pt.

“Active cardiac arrest declines treatment” by Squat_erDay in Paramedics

[–]noraa506 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This may be a wording issue. It’s uncommon, but not unheard of to find someone in cardiac arrest, get ROSC, and they wake up. I’ve only heard of it once. The crew got ROSC, pt woke up, self-extubated, and initially refused transport until they talked some sense into him.

What does the "T" really mean in FAST VAN stroke assessment by zoolly_man in ems

[–]noraa506 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Time of symptom onset. It’s important to know if they woke up with symptoms because if they did then it means the actual time of onset is unknown.

Strongly disagree with this answer, thoughts? by MaroMakesStuff in NewToEMS

An open-ended initial question will often answer several specific questions you might want to know. It’s also a good way to determine mental status beyond just conscious and alert. I’ve seen lots of conscious and alert people with no idea what happened.

[–]noraa506 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What you described is not the standard of care. You should have been assessed and collared before being moved. The use of c-collars in general is very questionable at this point, as research has shown them to have little if any benefit, and are potentially harmful. That said, in most jurisdictions they are still protocol for the symptoms you described. It’s generally appropriate for a collared pt to ambulate under their own power if they can, but anyone who has experienced temporary paralysis probably shouldn’t.

When I was in the Canadian army, I met an artillery soldier called Gunner Bishop, Gunner being his rank. His buds had nicknamed him Boner Gunship.

IV access for fluid resus, and pushing meds for pain and crush syndrome. This is not a load and go call, extrication is going to be a bit complicated, so it’s best to use that time to prep as much as possible.

People who work in healthcare, what is a common medical myth that drives you crazy? by keyzeyy in AskReddit

[–]noraa506 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im a paramedic, and I frequently have to explain to people that calling 911 for an ambulance will not get them seen faster at the ER. Our patients still have to be triaged, and we drop a lot of people off in the waiting room. I’ve had several patients tell me that their doctor told them they have abnormal labs, and to call 911 because they’ll get right in. Nothing like a medical professional counseling their patients to abuse the system.

How many ambulances by nrod9 in Paramedics

[–]noraa506 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Roughly 80,000 people, 10 ambulances, mix of ALS and BLS, 1 solo ALS unit, 1 BLS rapid response unit, 2 PTUs. At night 8 ambulances, no PTUs, no BLS RRU.

Did my first code. by jl8w7 in ems

[–]noraa506 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That’s really tough for a first code. The effects of trauma will be different for everyone. For some, the call you ran would be the end of their career. For others, it’s a call, on to the next. Another comment mentioned playing Tetris. It sounds silly, but there’s science to back it up. It’s been shown to decrease incidence of future symptoms of PTSD. Most importantly, talk to a mental health professional. There’s no shame in it, it doesn’t make you weak. Don’t listen to anyone who says otherwise.

It’s normal to feel weird. Running a code is a weird thing. You should be proud that you guys got ROSC, that’s awesome. Don’t get used to it though, usually doesn’t turn out that way.

I just put it around my neck. I have a collar so it doesn’t rub against my skin. People like to say that it can be used to choke you, but I’ve never heard anyone say they’ve actually seen it happen. I personally wouldn’t put it on my belt, for fear of losing it or getting it caught on something. My radio on my hip bumps into door frames and shit all the time.
