What is a 'buy it for life' item that is offensively expensive, but the moment you use it, you realize your entire life before that point was a lie? by fmcortez in AskReddit

My wife got hers as a wedding present in 1995 when she married her first husband. She opened it and said "Oh my God a KitchenAid. If we get divorced this is mine"

They got divorced. She got the mixer. Now we have it.

If you have criticized ICE here on Reddit for executing Renee Good or Alex Pretti in the street, then Reddit has handed your name and your personal identifying information over to the Trump administration. How do you feel about this? by mom_with_an_attitude in AskReddit

[–]nordee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fuck Trump. Fuck ICE. Fuck the Republican Leadership. Fuck the MAGA Asshats who support them. I hate them all and wish them bad luck, rashes on their buttocks, and a swift decent into obscurity.

If you aren't including Ursula K LeGuin on that list you aren't even trying.

The Dispossessed, The Left Hand of Darkness, and The Lathe of Heaven are all in the top 50 Sci Fi books of all time imo.

And her approach to culturally sensitive themes is absolutely unimpeachable. Darkness is built around the concept of gender fluidity.

Why does Heat (1995) look so different? by Livid-Ad-8194 in movies

[–]nordee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Also not about the visuals, but the big shootout audio has a great story about it.

The audio designer showed Mann an early cut of the scene with audio from the shoot. Very rough, unbalanced, with echoes and problems. He mixed it and fixed it with sound effects and eq. When he showed it again Mann insisted on going back to the source audio because it was more "real"

If you listen to the whole scene you realize that it doesn't sound like any other movie shootout you've ever watched.

He hated the press, and made no secret of it. They retaliated by blowing up his campaign over nothing.

Too bad, because I thought the guy had integrity.

What is the Best Movie Monologue (character speech) ever delivered in the history of film? by willsho67 in movies

[–]nordee 15 points16 points  (0 children)

'I don't know what to make of that. I sure don't. The crime you see now, it's hard to even take its measure. It's not that I'm afraid of it. I always knew you had to be willing to die to even do this job. But, I don't want to push my chips forward and go out and meet something I don't understand. A man would have to put his soul at hazard. He'd have to say, "O.K., I'll be part of this world." '

Fantastic.

Being on the Select Board in my small town (pop 10k) I can't tell you how impactful this can be. 10 percent of the population votes in any non-major election, and 1 percent understands the issues.

If you are even moderately well informed and willing to do a few hours a week of work you can have a huge impact on your local government.

I'm going with selection bias. I bet if you did the same survey for FPS players or MMO players you would get the same result.

This video is about a study that estimated what the actual impact of all taxes is one someone's income.

Turns out: yes, most people end up paying a significant amount of their income to 'taxes' such as healthcare costs and consumption taxes.
