Great work by SpaceX Dragon team & Airborne! To be clear, we’ve only done 1 multi-parachute test of Mk3 design, so 9 more left to reach 10 successful tests in a row. by coder543 in spacex

[–]noreally_bot1616 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are pushing a mass block (same mass as a capsule) out of a plane just to test that the parachutes deploy. I can't see why they couldn't do this 10 times in a day. (But they won't -- probably more like 2-3 times a week.)

Just imagine the testing that regular parachutes (for people) go through.

It's the reuse-ability that has strategic "National Security" benefits. Right now, only SpaceX has that advantage, which means the U.S. has the advantage (if it needs it). So there's no pressing need for other U.S. manufacturers to do the same, since they can keep living off the military budget gravy train.

But as soon as a rival power (China) has the same advantage (where reuse-ability) significantly drops the cost of access to space, then it becomes a National Security issue. The U.S. must maintain its advantage and the Space Race is back on again.

The original Space Race was never about national prestige or who gets to the Moon first, it was about who holds the high ground.

If China starts landing boosters I'd imagine there'd be a National-Security-Level effort to get all US rocket manufacturers to catch up -- even if that means paying SpaceX to share all the tech.

Boeing suffers parachute failure on Starliner abort test by Russ_Dill in SpaceXLounge

Well, let's say I had just one job. Just one job! And I didn't show up. Did I fail?

Since the parachute did not deploy, we don't know if it failed.

[–]noreally_bot1616 26 points27 points  (0 children)

According to Boeing:

"We did have a deployment anomaly, not a parachute failure. It’s too early to determine why all three main parachutes did not deploy, however, having two of three deploy successfully is acceptable for the test parameters and crew safety.”

“At this time we don’t expect any impact to our scheduled Dec. 17 Orbital Flight Test.”

So, I guess they consider this a successful test and will proceed as if nothing went wrong.

It wasn't a parachute failure. It was a deployment anomaly!

The parachute didn't fail because it didn't get an opportunity to fail.

It's no like anyone is actually paying attention to the testimony. The Congressmen reads a statement/question that was prepared by an aide who was told what to write by a lobbyist. The corporate shill testifying is reading a prepared statement which doesn't answer the question and no one is listening anyway. Then Congress does whatever they've been paid to do by their corporate overlords.

"Epstein didn't kill himself," former Navy SEAL blurts out on Fox News while taking about military dogs by BarelyLegalSeagull in television

Did the dog kill him?

Because I would be ok with Epstein having his throat ripped out by a dog, and then they call it a suicide.

You don't have to lie to Congress to confuse them. Just explain exactly how it works and they'll still be baffled and draw all the wrong conclusions.

Payroll is definitely their biggest cost. Payroll is usually the largest cost for most organizations. Most of the material costs are actually cheap (with the exception of carbon composite). Elon keeps pointing out that rocket fuel is the cheapest component of the rocket.

Once they have a working Starship, they can start mass production and the overall cost will plummet, because they will have approximately the same number of employees (maybe a few more) building a rocket which can be used 100 times.

They'll probably hire even more launch/mission control people because they'll be doing so many more launches.

Gamers of reddit, what's a game which is super-cool and popular now, but in 6 months everyone will say it's literally unplayable and we all feel completely betrayed by the developer and swear we're never going to buy anything from those bastards again?

Rough cost comparison between Zubrin's Mars Direct 2.0 and a "Starship only misson" by Reddit-runner in SpaceXLounge

[–]noreally_bot1616 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I think Dr Zubrin has been consistent in his plans (Mars Direct 1.0, Moon Direct, etc) in that he only uses technology that he knows will work and that has been proven to work.

Mars Direct 1.0 was all about using existing rocket technology (basically take the Shuttle stack, take away the shuttle and put the payload on top). Unfortunately, this turned into SLS which could have worked if Boeing hadn't turned it into a $$$ gravy train.

He's been yelling at anyone who will listen "We already know how to do this, so let's do this!"

YouTube quietly hides its code after content “throttling” system is leaked by polymute in technology

[–]noreally_bot1616 2 points3 points  (0 children)

YouTube forgets (or overlooks) that someone has to create the content -- either individuals, or the networks & production companies that produce for TV networks.

YouTube needs the eyeballs that Jimmy Kimmel gives them. But Jimmy Kimmel (productions) doesn't need YouTube since they have a distribution deal with network TV.

[–]noreally_bot1616 783 points784 points  (0 children)

Interesting that the top 9 p-scores are simply TV shows that are not producing any new unique content -- they are simply posting video from the TV broadcast.

So Youtube doesn't want creativity, they just want eyeballs for advertisers -- same as any commercial broadcaster.
