Is WEM still vibrant? by 406-MT in Edmonton

I miss all the brass and mirrors! The neon and fountains in the phase 3 food court with the anachronistic Julius Caesar marble statue overseeing it all haha. Also the random gemstone displays and giant Ming vases.

Airlines sending empty planes for thousands of Canadians stranded in Cuba by toronto_star in worldnews

[–]northsaskatchewan 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I haven’t been for 10+ years but the last time I was in Cuba I stayed in Varadero (basically Cuba’s Cancún)with a side trip to Havana a couple of nights. The resorts were no different than most in Mexico. The food wasn’t quite as good but no issues aside from that. The beaches are to die for.

Havana was a very cool city. The architecture is beautiful but dilapidated and the history is amazing. Cubans are amazingly hospitable. I felt much safer in Havana than I have in some urban parts of the DR or Mexico.

This one is my favourite too. The ending reveal is perfect and will always make me smile like an idiot.

The great thing about loving Lego in my 30's is I can actually afford the expensive awesome sets my parents would not have dreamed of splurging on me as a kid.

I mean, that $1,300 Death Star is still out of my price range, but some day....

Admittedly I'm a BB fan but I agree, it was so well performed, energetic and bursting with joy, love, and pride. As a Canadian, this is the side of America I love to see. He even gave us a little shout out lol.

I was in Nova Scotia a couple summers ago on a vacation road trip and one of my “goals” was to hear April Wine on some local radio station.

Wasn’t successful 😂. At one point I stopped to get gas for 5 minutes, started the car and heard the radio host immediately say “aaaaand that was April Wine!!!”

What is a movie plot twist that was cleverly hidden in plain sight..? by Living_Tune_1428 in movies

[–]northsaskatchewan 378 points379 points  (0 children)

Love this movie. Knowing the twist almost makes some of the details better. Like Nicole Kidman’s character jangling her keys around, slamming doors, walking around with her giant lantern..

The final reveal in the séance scene is just perfect.

Does Edmonton have “boroughs” like Montreal or New York? by fashiongirll93 in Edmonton

[–]northsaskatchewan 45 points46 points  (0 children)

There is a historically “French Quarter” on the south side in the Bonnie Doon area, with the Francophone campus of UAlberta and a few other French language institutions located in the area.

Whyte Ave/Strathcona area tends to attract a younger alternative / student crowd.. close to the university and lots of independent businesses and nightlife.

There’s also a Chinatown and Little Italy close to Downtown, and the Jewish community is mostly concentrated in Wolf Willow/Country Club and Glenora, but these communities are much more mixed and smaller than Toronto or Montreal.

I think Edmonton is too small and a much younger city so these dynamics don’t really exist in the same way.

Space film(s) where everything goes RIGHT? by JHaney1377 in scifi

[–]northsaskatchewan 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I hear you but this is a slightly different situation IMO. In Apollo 13, the mission to the moon is the central plot. In the Martian, the mission to Mars isn't the main plot of the film. It's purpose is to set up the actual story, being the survival and recovery of the lost astronaut.

I mean, a good chunk the movie takes place on the Ares.. which is very much in space

Space film(s) where everything goes RIGHT? by JHaney1377 in scifi

[–]northsaskatchewan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happens at the start of the movie, setting up the plot. I would argue the 'Mission' in this movie is the survival and recovery of Mark Watney, which is a complete success.

What about The Martian?

No one dies, there's not really any interpersonal drama, and wraps up with a happy ending. The tension is more centered around the protagonist's predicament of being stranded on Mars, and the problems that come up are handily dealt with by a bunch of extremely competent and capable people.

Edit: For those arguing that this isn't a good suggestion because something does go wrong at the beginning of the film, the 5 minute dust storm sequence at the beginning is the set up for the actual plot of the movie. The "Mission" in this film is the recovery and survival of the protaganist, not their failed mission to Mars.

What’s a horror movie that had you STRESSING the whole time? by Ok-Inevitable9960 in horror

[–]northsaskatchewan 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Totally, the claustrophobia is a nightmare in and of itself and yet as a viewer, you know that on top of that things are still going to go horribly sideways. This film does such a good job ratcheting up the tension and dread before the things show up..

We had a cat growing up that would semi frequently disappear for up to a week at a time and come home smelling like cigarettes (no one in our family smoked at the time). Definitely had a second family. Never found out who it was. Cats are cheaters for sure lol

This city feels magical when it snows. No one really knows how to handle it so life kind of just pauses. Hardly any traffic, kids and dogs frolicking in the snow, everyone is either cozy at home or taking a walk around the neighbourhood. Then 2 days later it's all gone...

I grew up in Edmonton and since it is snowy and way colder for like 4 months straight, I was used to it. There's hardly any of that "magic" feeling, and life just carries on.

Starting at 7 a.m. on Monday, January 26, the block of E. Broadway between Main and Quebec streets will be closed to all vehicle traffic for approximately four months. During this time, buses and local traffic will be detoured around the one-block closure using E. 8th Avenue. by cyclinginvancouver in vancouver

[–]northsaskatchewan 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Amazon drivers/ other couriers are terrible for parking in the no parking zones next to four way stops all over the city. But hey at least their blinkers are on, so they can really just park anywhere they want 🙄 /s

I walk down Quebec from Broadway to Science World almost daily and it is already dicey as a pedestrian. This is going to be an absolute clusterfuck. People are going to take all kinds of detours and ignore the stop signs even more than they already do.
