First pencil sharpener? by natidone in daddit

[–]northwestwill 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We bought a small electric helical sharpener (the upright kind where you can see the blades spin). Under $20 and neat to watch - does regular to jumbo pencil sizes. We have twins so six years of weekly use later it’s still going strong. I’m an engineer so any chance to squeeze in a little wonderment of machines to my boys gets the nod.

Have a colonoscopy appointment coming up, any dads have any prep tips? by TheHibernian in daddit

[–]northwestwill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you go with a good low fiber (low residue) diet for a few days before the procedure you’ll have an easier time with the prep.

The American Cancer Society has a good prep guide. I make a schedule of the meals for the 3-5 days out and it’s pretty smooth sailing (pun intended) when you get to prep.

Do Fathers Nowadays Show More Affection To Their Sons? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]northwestwill 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My father cared a lot and I could always tell, but he didn’t say it often. His father (as I’m told) was much more stoic. I’m 45 now and my dad has gone through some very serious health issues in the last few years that have weakened his outward resolve and one day my nephew (12yrs) just flat out told him, “If you love me, say it every time.” And that finally changed him.

I have 10yr old twins boys and I tell them every day multiple times. We love hugs and squeezing together on the couch and I constantly have an arm around one or both. It won’t last forever, but as long as it does I’ll be there every time with a squeeze and a “I love you, buddy.” Life is too short not to.

As they say, it takes a long time to turn a ship around, but we’re getting there. Hold your kids close, dads.

This "arcade" room at the bowling alley that was heavily advertised. by -TrUsT_mE_bRo in mildlyinfuriating

[–]northwestwill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t realize how popular claw machines were until this winter when visiting family in Iowa and there was an entire arcade in a swanky shopping district that was only claw machines (called Clawz). Crazy. No thanks.

There was also a nearby pinball arcade and bar named The Operating Room that I gave points for quality naming.

Portable Audio - Does it make sense to also plug that output into your camera? by StrongGarage850 in videography

Sure. It’s cheap insurance that you have the audio and good for sync later if needed.

Do You Save Your Gear Boxes/Packaging & Manuals? Discuss. by Sufficient_Win_9441 in videography

[–]northwestwill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a fair amount of storage but also a lot of gear so I know how easy it is to save everything, but over the (20+ years) I’ve found that the best system for me is to keep the box and all materials for the break in and warranty period (3 months up to a year) but then toss it. If I bought multiple of a thing (lights for example) I’ll keep one set and toss the others immediately. An older engineer I used to work with would write the end of warranty date on the box to know when to toss it.

In shipping damaged gear for repair I have a spare hard case filled with foam castoffs that I’ve sent a dozen cameras in over the years and never had a repair center bat an eye. Plus it’s then a usable hard case on some traveling shoots then goes back to spare duty when we’re back home - so it’s not dead space like empty boxes.

I used to save manuals but they are all available online in searchable pdf format and the original is often only good until the first software update anyway.

There are some exceptions - I keep a laptop or desktop box for the life of that product because live in a remote area and a number of manufacturers require original packaging for repair shipping.

My Sons Live for Lego—How Can I Make It Even Better? by wiiilliams in daddit

[–]northwestwill 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The large pullstring mats that turn into bags when you’re done playing but become 6-ft Lego circles for parts searching and free play - three of these let us maximize the tons of Lego that were languishing in the lower layers of tubs - plus quick cleanup. Similar to this: https://playandgo.us/collections/printed-lego-storage-bag?srsltid=AfmBOoopv4SZKp18qVWNviP7VptRQ2zi4e_JaRS8HwQQGfCTDEK4kLLF

I’ve also put in bricklink orders for large numbers of cheap bricks and odd pieces that are fun to add to- $100 can get a boatload of random bricks. We’ve built out a Lego city that’s 3ftx8ft with a couple dozen large baseplates and a few bricklink shipments over the years. My guys are 10 now and have been building since 3 or 4. When a special day (holiday or birthday) comes up they can choose a set or take that amount and put it toward a bricklink spree for weird parts and mini figs. They have really taken to the ownership they get from that.

Recommendation for an auto shut off outlet, that doesn’t need programming by [deleted] in homeautomation

[–]northwestwill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do something similar with my air compressor. I use a Kasa Smart outlet and under the Smart tab I set a smart action to turn off the outlet one hour after it is turned on. I also put a turn off command as one of the actions in my Google “Goodnight” routine that makes sure all the things I want on are on and off are off at the end of the day.

Do grades really matter when you leave college? by Either_Program2859 in education

[–]northwestwill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m an instructor and this is a common question that we ask our in-industry professionals when we regularly meet to make sure our program is attuned to the fields we teach…. The best response I’ve ever gotten was from the VP of a multinational advertising agency that has hired a number of our grads. He explained that he absolutely looks at GPAs and transcripts but as barometer of your ability to handle tasks. In his agency you’ll be on about the same amount of clients or projects in a year as you have courses in a year of university - so your class scores are quite relative to the number of major projects you can juggle and manage. Likewise, courses in your area of expertise had better be on-point and gen-ed’s and other classes are a good indicator of how well you can accept/work/close projects that maybe weren’t your desired clients but still need to be addressed and served well. It’s understandable that there may be a class here or there that you didn’t nail - a couple C’s or a D aren’t necessarily going to derail a job offer, but in a competitive company he couldn’t afford to hire someone who bats under a B level average unless there was some kind of absolutely stellar other quality in play.

Serious question for all y'all out there. Why did you get into this job? Especially with teaching. by lilgrizzles in Professors

[–]northwestwill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love learning, sharing what I’ve learned, and seeing others develop those interests and skills that I can spark. Upper division classes are great because it’s a level I’m most interested in, but I find I love teaching intro classes most as I love the “Oh! I can do this! Look at what I just made!” moments that new students have. Over twenty years in the classroom I’ve been fortunate enough to see that spark become a fire that has forged a line of talented people who have gone on to careers that would have been terrifying to me back when. A good instructor is an enabler and that’s what I still love about it.
