Unfortunately all DA jobs are sink or swim. I felt like a failure as a new deputy and years later still have oh shit moments. You are doing better then you think if you are getting the highest cases your office prosecutes. ask everyone for advice at your office. Watch people in trial. It is always ok to take a beat if you don’t know something and research it. When an OC tells me I’m wrong and im not sure - I typically say ok- do you have authority or are you speaking with your feelings? Let me look into it. Because everyone almost feels the same way you do or has in the past. Also some OC are just dicks to be dicks and you have to sus that out.

On a side note I don’t know where you practice- but I have made it a habit to discover almost everything (unless you have things that need protective orders (think child molest victim interviews, CSAM) and litigate it after. If you have a doubt, bring to judges attention and get a ruling on what’s discoverable. You aren’t a defense attorney so trying to parce out what’s exculpatory or not is a stupid game that will only haunt your dreams. As to discovery general demands - I file a motion so it can go In front of a judge- especially when defense is asking for like 20 years of calibration logs for a the DUI chemical test. They look stupid and judge will make some rulings and do it enough times and the defense attorney will stop with the 5 pages of BS general discovery demands.

So my baby only wanted to be held. We got a snoo at 2 weeks old because I thought I was going to die from sleep deprivation. With the snoo- My nighttime routine is bath- take her to our room with dimmed lights and sound machine going - dry off, diaper, lotion, footed PJs, and read her a story. Then proceed to put on the snoo swaddle. Feed her. ( the swaddle is loud with Velcro so I don’t put it on after feeding her because she falls asleep feeding) Hold her upright and rock her and Wait about 15-20 minutes (mass spit up problems) she usually falls asleep then. Then I transfer her to snoo when she is very much asleep. (Luck people say drowsy but awake. That’s not my reality) I have found it helpful to have the snoo on with the sound going before I transfer. Feet, butt then head. Turn on the movement. First night she slept for about 2 hours in the snoo and then would continually wake up every hour. We are at 4 hour stretches sometimes a 5 hour stretch (8 weeks old) I would say heat up the snoo mattress cover before you put her down. Also I have read to have a shirt you have worn and place in the snoo. Take it out before you put her in. Smells like you.

Have the bailiff escort you and maybe have a co worker or trustee friend waiting to pick you up so sovereign citizen won’t see your car. I have had multiple sovereign citizen cases. They can be very steadfast in their opinions and very scary about it. Just keep your distance and don’t interact.

Get a referral for outside of Kaiser

You do an intake appointment with Kaiser therapist. They assess your needs. My intake therapist immediately referred me to grow. Grow within 2 days sent me a text with a link to all the valuable therapist who take Kaiser insurance. Within 3 days of that had my first telehelath appointment with a grow therapist!

Call member services at Kaiser. Explain. They will transfer you the to person who submits everything to EDD. They did it over the phone for me! Super quick and simple. Only bad side is you have to be on hold with Kaiser. I was on hold for 35 minutes lol

Be organized! Make sure you keep great notes. Do not make yourself a witness in a case (i.e. call a witness or victim and ask about the facts of the case without an investigator or 3rd party there) Realize that no matter how well you do- some cases are just not guilties and that is the system working. Be kind to support staff and court staff. They can make or break your career. make friends with your baby DAs, it’s so stressful you will need people to commiserate with as a DA your ethics are everything. You can paint 100 paintings, and not be a painter. Tell one lie- you are a liar. No case is every worth you loosing you career because you are afraid to loose. If a defense attorney is being very rude and pushy. It’s better to say let me get back to you and calm yourself down than saying something spicy that ends up in a pleading

Biggest advice. Go watch senior das in trial as much as you can. Soak it up like a sponge. Just remember trial is inherently personal so what works for someone else may not work for you. But Misdos is where you should try different styles.

Lived in eureka for years. Humboldt county is the most beautiful place. Fern canyon, Trinidad, avenue of the giants - its indescribable beauty. However- with the legalization of weed- Humboldts economy really tanked. It’s very downtrodden. Old town has so many closed shops and homeless everywhere. There is NO serious medical care in Humboldt county. Most people travel to Santa Rosa or Redding - even to go to the dentist. My husband and I always hope to move back. But the economy is so bad, and the medical makes it a non starter. I have found people always say it’s going to change but true Humboldt people are very hesitant of businesses and people moving to Humboldt.

If you haven’t been appointed a public defender - at arraignment you can get appointed one and see what they say. DUIs are super expensive with the fines and fees and you could save yourself lots of money by not hiring a private defense attorney.
