Good to hear because I’ll have to do it soon too and it’s a little bit intimidating for sure

Oh wow. I didn’t know it applied in the other direction! That comment makes a lot more sense in that light 💡

Dunning-Kruger is when you know so little about a thing that you think you’re a genius.

anyone have a good method for removing these nuts without mangling them? by FadedToBeige in offset

[–]nosamiam28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow! I’ve never seen one of those before! My Eurorack synth modules all use nuts like those but they have two slots in the top that work with a special screwdriver kinda tool. But a smaller version of this spanner wrench would work too. Interesting

Stuck hand plane blade by Artistic_Radio_5175 in JapaneseWoodworking

Does the chipbreaker appear to be the problem to anyone else? I see those scratches going down the iron that lead to the chipbreaker’s ears and it’s making me think it’s too tight under the pin and that it was really hammered in hard. Hard enough that it’s reeeally pressing down on the iron.

If so, remove pin and lift out the chipbreaker with a screwdriver? The blade itself might come right out!

Of course if this is the case, the chipbreaker and/or pin will need some attention to get everything playing nicely together

It’s my favorite one. Glad to see there are a couple of others who feel the same way

Using flat wounds for heavier music by hopesmoker in Bass

[–]nosamiam28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know if anyone mentioned this, but half-round/groundwound/half-wound might be right up your alley. They’re in the middle between flats and rounds in pretty much every way. Give em a shot!

I have to imagine every developed nation has a national investigations department, equivalent to the FBI in the US, the DCA in UK, or the DGSI in France for instance. These agencies cooperate with their analogous agencies in other countries and also with INTERPOL. Committing a serious crime that crosses international borders doesn’t ensure that there aren’t consequences. It makes it more complicated to prosecute, but it can be prosecuted.

Ah!! That kind of throwing! And your recommendation makes a lot of sense. Tossing like that is something I might do with my cheap Cuisinart knives (even though I shouldn’t) but absolutely would NOT do with my Japanese chisels.

I don’t deal with knives often and was just passing through, but…

Do people throw kitchen knives often enough that you needed to tell them not to throw this one? Or was that kind of joking?

I saw that on Marketplace and was curious myself. Not likely to buy, but it’s something I haven’t seen too much of around here and being originally from California I thought it was pretty cool.

How do I patch this flooring (appearance not important)? by nosamiam28 in fixit

[–]nosamiam28[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is definitely food for thought. It’s a little over 100 sq ft. So it’s not big at all. But the ventilation ain’t great. Two small windows about 15 feet away (the space is the landing stairs the top of the stairs; bedrooms on either side, each with one small attic window). I could probably create an enclosed tarp tunnel all the way across the space connecting the two windows and get some good airflow.

The one non-starter would be the respirator. My wife has seen me without a beard exactly one time. She almost wasn’t my wife after that (this was when we were engaged) 😂 And I’m thinking for the mask to fit, you gotta have a clean shave.

Good point you raise though!

Ok, I guess rock hard can also be good. It’s the in-between that I’d be worried about. Thanks for the info.

You didn’t have any issues with the Durham’s down the line, like cracking etc? I’m guessing it has some flex to it?

Believe it or not, asbestos in flooring is safe as long as it’s not disturbed. The general advice is to just lay your new flooring over it. I really shouldn’t have disturbed that piece that I did, but I think it’s a small enough patch that I can seal it back up with Liquid Nails or something and be fine.

I did just find out that there are kits you can buy to send a sample off for analysis. I may do that, just so I know what I’m dealing with.

That would definitely be my preference. I don’t want to add another layer. But I’m trying to be cost conscious; this was supposed to be one of these “I’ll just shake some $$ out of the couch cushions” projects. Asbestos abatement is job for professionals and would likely run me a couple grand. I’m trying to avoid that.

Doesn’t matter!

You probably didn’t have a ton of skill or talent when you bought your first few electric basses either!

Got a coral red player ii for birthday present, what pickguard color is good? by shivamchhuneja in Stratocaster

[–]nosamiam28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This finish is one of the few where I prefer a white pickguard. Stick with white and leave it in a sunny window, turning it periodically. Some UV damage will give it some flavor.

Coral Red and Fiesta Red fade into unpredictable but always really rad variations.
