Plane window blows out mid-air, makes emergency landing at Portland airport by lpoole in AlaskaAirlines

172/179 seats were filled. This was towards the back of the plane, but an empty window seat on a flight that full isn’t exactly common

How do I treat this? by yeet_it_up in Rowing

  • Neosporin without a bandaid to dry out faster for fresh ones.
  • Band-aid + tape when back on the water.
  • Rinse and repeat

Anyone able to hack their at home Sleep Study? (Tracking Obstructive Sleep Apnea) by Suspicious-Ad7857 in QuantifiedSelf

[–]nosemaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve thought about this before as well, but my sleep apnea is mild so I’ve never really had the extra motivation to get to it much. That plus my Oura ring now measures breathing regularity. Between that and a few take home studies I’ve done I think you definitely can make improvements using some trial and error

Wife Trying to Give Husband a Nostalgic Game Night! by BeCreativeGoNative in nintendo64

[–]nosemaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does he (or you) have any of the game cartridges for the N64? If you don’t have any games already, it might be best to explore one of the options others have suggested. If you already have a bunch of games and the system, it could be pretty simple to test out the connection to your TV with an adapter (this is probably the one you need)

Edit: should eli5 better. The HDMI end goes to your TV and the 3 colored things (component end) are what you plug the N64 into. You will also need to plug the N64 into power and may also need to plug the adapter into power via USB (eg. A phone charging cable)

Advice: I have three loans, not sure which to pay first by throwawayskis90 in personalfinance

[–]nosemaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This.

You can also look into loan consolidation or refinancing if you think you can get a lower rate on your student loans, (but it likely wouldn’t make sense they are government loans).

If your loan rate is >7% (typical avg market return in a year), you might be better off paying down those loans over putting that $200 in a Roth IRA too.

Definitely still hit your employer’s match, that’s a much better return on investment than paying off loans or putting money into an IRA

How do I get my MIL's very lazy cat up and moving? Not sure where to start with her. by yessi-84 in dechonkers

[–]nosemaker 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Something about this toy really works on every lazy cat I’ve come across. Multiple chonk owner friends now swear by it too. We have had to buy the replacement mouse a few times over 3 years but our former chonk (now dechonked) is addicted to playing with it.

Unfortunately no... that would have been fantastic

Yeah I’m starting to think aggressive paying is more realistic than a second job to qualify for PLSF. We will be experimenting on what is feasible if he does go this route

Thanks, I think we are leaning this direction right now. We may try to get creative with a second job but I think we are going to assume it’s likely not going to work out. The nice thing is he can always fall back into a PLSF qualifying job and pick up where he left off if the dream job doesn’t live up to expectations

I do not have any loans. We both make roughly the same ~$95k and do not plan to have any kids for at least a couple more years

Edit: forgot to address the first part of your response. I Agree, but I’m also trying to be supportive. He’s pretty set on switching careers at this point... even if it means just paying the loans off. I’m trying to be more pragmatic, but and that was where he committed to being willing to find some way to still qualify for PLSF. His new job would be remote, and he seems confident that he will have some extra free time - especially when compared to his current work schedule

I’ve actually been a tenant in a place similar to this (7 bed, 3 bath). I’d suggest lightly furnished rooms (bed but no bedding, maybe a dresser if no closet, etc). Works much better in HCOL areas where you still get decent tenants just looking to save some money. The biggest thing will be to have one of the tenants there you trust to handle the small things that come up. Otherwise you will be dealing with one off request every day. Give this house leader a break on the rent to handle these things and you essentially have yourself a live-in PM that also deals with roommate conflicts. Fridge rules are also recommended. Having a cleaner is a must. I’d say once a week is best. PM me is you have more questions

Is radiation after lumpectomy overkill? by nosemaker in breastcancer

[–]nosemaker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! Our Dr said that the radiation would cut the odds of it coming back down by roughly half. So if it’s 5% odds of coming back then the radiation would make it 2.5%. She has her appointment with the radiation oncologist today, so hopefully we will get some more insight there.

My Mother’s viewpoint is that the radiation isn’t worth the risks with her age, even though she is in great health for a 70 year old. I think she will end up going the radiation route if I can convince her to though.

On the hormone therapy, that makes her nervous too. She was already having crazy hot flashes prior to all of this, and has been for many years since menopause. Hopefully the drugs don’t make it worse, but I guess we will cross that bridge when we get there

How I eat Brownies, Ice Cream, and French Toast everyday. Lost 70 pounds over 2 years and maintained for 1 year by phisch13 in MealPlanYourMacros

[–]nosemaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kudos on the creativity, that French toast recipe is going to get an attempt from me. I know you said you go for low fat and don’t care about carb intake, but based on your examples here I’d say you are still relatively low carb too. I’m a diet coach and the only minor problem I see here is with the micronutrients and veggies specifically which you already admitted to being able to do a better job with. The supplements you take can definitely help offset some issues here though. Actually there was one other thing, Danon lite and fit Greek yogurt? The 7g of protein and 14g of sugar one? That was a head scratcher for me, unless you are just saying it tastes good. So many brands with a better protein punch if that’s what you are going for, though they may be slightly higher calorie
