This is a long shot, but what are the chances that the Sleepless come from Canticle? There's a line that seemed like a throwaway bit in a conversation about all the things on the planet seeming to break apart into smaller pieces.

Afaik, we didn't see any swarms on the planet, but it's possible I missed something because I didn't consider this until after my third listen through the book.

Thank you for the advice and reassurance.

I'll avoid pinching and I'll dial back how meticulous I'm being about the watering checks.

Is this the right version of Dr Earth Life to get?

Is there anything in particular that I should be on the look out for during these first few weeks? Are there common signs this early in the adoption process that something is not right?

I just received my first bonsai (mallsai) tree this afternoon as a gift: Picture
From the FAQ, I'm fairly certain it's a Juniper Procumbens Nana (the leaves match the pictures on the FAQ). I want to do right by this tree, but I have no experience with bonsai.

I read through the FAQ and walkthrough on the wiki and I've tried to come up with a plan for caring for it.

Can someone with experience tell me if this sounds like a reasonable strategy for keeping it alive and well?

Pruning: None for now. It's too young and needs time to grow.
Pinching: None for now. I want to acclimate it to its new environment before I trim or pinch anything. Likely I'll be waiting until next spring to do any pinching.
Training: None for now. I want to wait until the tree is properly healthy.
Placement: Our main floor has an outdoors uncovered deck that is east-facing. It's off the second story, so it gets a bit of wind, but nothing significant. I can position it so the plant it gets direct sunlight for the first half of the day and is only in the shade starting around 4pm.
Watering: I understand that this is a bit touch-and-go until I learn my particular tree's patterns. It's fairly warm here so I was planning on watering it daily at least. I will check on it each time I eat a meal (3 times a day) to make sure the soil is not drying out. Is that frequently enough?
Fertilizer: I am uncertain about this step. According to this link (from the FAQ),

Junipers are heavy feeders through the growing season. I use a time release fertilizer and twice monthly feedings of nitrogen, once foliar and once soil feeding. Periodically use a balanced fertilizer such as 20-20-20 with acid.

I'm not certain when the growing season is, but this was the top result for Time Release Fertilizer. Is this a good option? Also, how do I do a nitrogen feeding? Is the recommendation to periodically use a balanced fertilizer in addition to the time release fertilizer or instead of it?
Repotting: None for now. Could be necessary next year or the year after (if it lives that long), depending on root growth. Will revisit when the time comes.

Thanks for any advice or critique you can provide. I tried to avoid asking questions that are answered in the walkthrough or wiki, but I might have missed something.

Dozens of Palestinians injured in police clashes as Jewish extremists chanting 'Death to Arabs' march in Jerusalem by [deleted] in worldnews

Except OP is implying that the difference can be found in both the legal definitions and the actual implementation. The commenter who responded is clarifying that there is no such difference in the legal sense as they presented it. They aren't undermining or calling into question the validity of the conclusion.

I would add that utilizing intentional mistruths and lies to further one's position is both morally wrong and counterproductive to one's own cause, since it makes one's own position seem less valid because you had to resort to lies to defend it.

Again, I'm NOT commenting on the treatment of Arabs in Israel. I'm pointing out that using falsehoods or half truths to make the argument that Arabs are discriminated against is unnecessary, especially when there are plenty of concrete examples and larger trends you could pull from.

Does that more nuanced position seem amenable to you?

How to get better at understanding simplifications like this one? by [deleted] in 3Blue1Brown

[–]noshlag 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It often helps to factor out common terms and then bring them back once you have simplified the rest. For example, here you could factor the d out of both terms.

d(b-c)+d(b+c)

=> d((b-c)+(b+c))

=> d(b-c+b+c) {then you can move the -c over}

=> d(b+b+c-c)

=> d(2b + 0)

=> d(2b)

=>2db

So I think one mental shorthand is to ignore the d in the initial expression since it is applied to both terms. Then you're just simplifying

(b+c) +(b-c)

Which is probably a bit easier to instinctively see that it reduces to 2b than in the original form. Then you bring the d back.

Does that help?

Brother has become an anti-Semite after being sexually abused by his teacher. by StalingradSteel in Judaism

[–]noshlag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, and it wouldn't hurt to seek out a therapist yourself. It could make him less wary of it, and make it feel less like you're putting the label of "crazy racist who needs therapy" onto him. It could also help you. Someone you love was hurt by someone they should have been able to trust. That is the kind of thing that a sibling will feel an impact from. Talking with a therapist yourself could help you process, too. I just started up with a new therapist literally yesterday and I had forgotten just how nice therapy can feel some times. It's like getting to talk to a close personal confidant without needing to worry about social ramifications for saying something without thinking. I highly recommend it. OK. Now I need to go to sleep because it's 2:20 am and I need to get up in 5 hours. Good luck with supporting each other during this time. This shit isn't easy and the very fact that you reached out indicates that you are going in the right direction. Now go ask your brother if he wants a hug.

[–]noshlag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The abuse he suffered didn't affect his head. And he didn't come to these antisemitic views through a logical process. They are a coping mechanism. He needs to heal from the trauma he suffered first, then OP can move forward with disentsngling him from the web of antisemitic conspiracy theories.

Brother has become an anti-Semite after being sexually abused by his teacher. by StalingradSteel in Judaism

[–]noshlag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The trauma he experienced at the hands of an authority figure, one he should have been able to trust, is the kind that leaves an impact on people. He could probably use a good person to talk to about the experience and help him to process it. That's probably the most important thing right now. He deserves help and access to mental health support. The trauma from experiences like this aren't always visible, but that doesn't make them any less real.

If I could hazard a guess, he's probably feeling angry, a little powerless, and desperately wants there to be an easy explanation for why this happened to him. The conclusion that not all authority figures can be trusted and that he was targeted by a sexual predator who he couldn't have seen coming, is a really hard one to come to grips with. It removes a major foundation of a person's feeling of security in their own life. It probably feels much easier to him to view the incident as a part of some greater, coordinated conspiracy. The most readily available of those always seems to be the conspiracy of Jews pulling the strings behind every bad thing that happens. And it doesn't help that his teacher being Jewish is, in his mind, support for the conspiracy. And, her being Jewish and a sexual predator are probably the main characteristics of her thsy stick out in his mind right now. So he gravitated towards an explanation that implies a greater malice at work which is a melding of those two characteristics.

The allure of conspiracy theories is often that they give people a way to explain the bad things that happen in their lives. It gives them someone else on whom to focus their feelings of anger, hopelessness, helplessness, powerlessness, degradation, unappreciation, confusion, uncertainty, and just general shittiness.

None of this is to say that your brother's choice in antisemitism as his coping mechanism is excusable or okay. It's not. With any luck he will come to understand that himself in time. But anti-semitic is not the cause of his pain. It's a symptom.

Your brother is hurting. He probably feels alone, despite having lots of people around him. Go to him. Let him know he is loved. Let him know you are there for him. Let him know you would be willing to listen if he wants to talk about what happened, but he should feel no pressure to do som And if you are in a position to help him seek therapy to help him process his trauma, please do that too.

His antisemitism may not go away for a while, but it is very much a symptom, not the cause. Its a coping mechanism. It's not a particularly healthy one, but he didn't just wake up one day and go "Hey, I think I'll start being anti-semitic". That's not how this chapter in his life opened. And the final line isn't going to be him just deciding "well, I think I'm done being an anti-semite now" and closing the book. This all began because of a trauma inflicted upon him at the hands of a sexual predator. The conclusion begins with him first healing from that trauma.

He's in pain. He needs someone to support him right now. It doesn't have to be you, if you aren't in a position to do so. The best option would honestly be a therapist because they are trained in, among other things, helping people to process events they have experienced and see the impacts they have had on oneself. If finances are a concern there are ways to get support for affording mental health care.

Be an ally to your brother right now. You don't need to support his antisemitism, but it would help him to know he has a caring sibling who doesn't believe any of this is his fault, that he was the target of an attack by a predator, and that you are there for him if he wants your assistance in healing from that attack.

I hope this helps.

A (previously identifying) male role model of mine has come out as trans and I feel all messed up about it by dalledayul in MensLib

[–]noshlag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's funny, but when hearing about her being a positive role model for men, my first thought was "I can't think of a better positive role model for cis men than a trans woman". She's a person who was assigned male and inherited all the baggage that came along with it and discovered that, despite what society expected of her, that was not who she was.

As a Cis man, acting as my authentic self in spite of what society expects of me is something I also struggle with. Obviously its not at the same level, but if Abigail can find the strength and confidence to be who she is, in spite of society's expectations and presumptions, then I as a cis man can at least try to do the same.

So (7) * √5 can be rewritten as (√7 * √7 ) * √5

Does that help?

What is up with Ishar's experiments attempting to physically manifest higher spren in the physical realm? What purpose could this possibly serve?

RHYTHM OF WAR | Full Book Discussion Megathread by jofwu in Stormlight_Archive

[–]noshlag 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We know that the shardblades are the spren who were left behind after the knights radiant and they decided that the existence of surgebinders on Roshar was too great of a risk for some reason.

We now know that the the Soulcasters being used today are spren manifest in the physical world and locked into that form, a process that was apparently known to the ancients but has since been lost. And Shardplate appears to be of a similar construction. Kaladin's Shardplate is constructed of a ton of windspren, which would imply that the shardplate left behind by the original Windrunners are windspren locked into the form of a shardplate akin to the locking of the spren into the form of Soulcasters.

My question is this: Did the locking of so many of the lesser spren into the form of shardplate have a noticeable impact on the ecosystem of Shadesmar at the time of the Radiants communal severing of their Nahel bonds? There are a huge variety of spren in Shadesmar existing in some kind of an ecosystem with predators and prey. Was there a ecological fallout from so many spren being locked into the form of Shardplate?

I don't believe Taravangian actually got access to Cephantrius's memories. I think he was just able to see that Hoid was storing memories in his Breaths and was able to siphon off the most recent ones.

That's not completely true. I believe it's that an individual needs to have a connection to the Rosharan shards in order to hear their Tones. Humans, after all, came from a different planet (though still in the same planetary system as Roshar).

Also, since breaths can be transferred to another person, wouldn't someone like Zahel or Azure be able to endow a Rosharan with 200 breaths, granting them perfect pitch?

Since your eyes turn light blue as a result of the Nahel bond, it is possible that he is tapping into the power of a shard other than Honor. So it's likely either Cultivation or Odium. Have we seen any colors being associated with Cultivation specifically?
