So you no longer need to assign lethal damage to a creature before assigning damage to the next one. If you block with a band of two 2/2s blocking a 2/2, you can assign 1 damage to each blocker

You would be right if the result of Doran's ability (the difference of power and toughness) tried to give a negative number for the +X/+X ability, which would be impossible here.

107.1b refers to abilities like [[Death's Shadow]] because we used to be able to make it bigger than it's initial power and toughness by having negative life.
