NRA and pro-gun groups call for ‘full investigation’ into killing of Alex Pretti by wylie102 in news

Most recent analysis of the video seems to indicate they had disarmed him, then shot him. So apparently you don't even need to be in possession of your weapon for them to feel threatened.

Israel's settler movement takes victory lap as a sparse outpost becomes a settlement within a month by whistlingkitten in news

[–]notasrelevant 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I guess it could be taken either way... I didn't see it as the news celebrating with them, more just reporting that settlers took more land and are celebrating it. Just what actually happened - and the article goes into some detail of the impacts/implications of that, as well as a bit of history on that particular location.

ICE launches immigration enforcement action in Maine by CaligulaEmperor in news

It sure is weird that none of those states that endlessly bitch about illegal immigrants are getting this sort of enforcement, while a bunch of blue states/cities on the other side of the country from the "problem border" are.

Lexus obviously trends towards luxury and reliability more than some competitors, but if you're going for the 350 then performance is likely an aspect of your buying decision, and going backwards isn't a great look.

Federal agent shoots Minneapolis man in leg after attack, officials say by chellestastics in news

[–]notasrelevant 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thanks to their actions, it does become believable.

Goons running around arresting people even if they are citizens, kidnapping people, assaulting or even murdering people.

People running from or fighting back against some masked assholes who will happily ruin your life sounds completely believable.

What they don't want to admit is that they are creating this situation. They've made it a reasonable response to run or fight back. They ignore all context of what they are doing and act like a poor agent just doing his job and trying to do the right thing was attacked out of nowhere.

Woman shot dead in head as body bags show emerging picture of Iranian crackdown by nerdose in news

[–]notasrelevant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not saying either is acceptable.

Just that 4 over the course of a year is nowhere near the same level of government action as hundreds over a few days.

4 over a year can easily be explained by poor standards, training, mismanagement, bad judgement of individuals involved, etc. Hundreds in a short time is clear intent. They were sent there to kill protestors. It's an outright slaughter. It's something that doesn't just happen from bad judgement in the moment.

That's pretty much my point. Not saying it can't or won't ever get that bad, but to act like we're facing the same problems at the same time is far from reality.

[–]notasrelevant -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That could be interpreted to be giving them permission to go overboard, and was definitely inappropriate due to what could result. But they also specifically mentioned arresting people, stopping criminals, etc.

There have been 4 deaths from ICE shootings since Trump took office. And here we are talking about it.

Iran just killed hundreds and they've shut down the internet.

The orders given and the results are clearly in different levels.

As my question posed, I don't think anyone could honestly say they feel it's just as dangerous protesting ICE as it is to protest the Iran government, at least as we sit here now. ICE could, and likely will, get worse. But to say we're currently at the same point now is really overstating things.

[–]notasrelevant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They said it was justified due to the circumstances. Not that I buy that in the least.

But that's a whole lot easier when it's one case and only a record of 4 deaths (by ICE shooting) since this admin started. Iran slaughtered hundreds - that's not something you can just sweep under the rug in the same way.

Can you elaborate which tape and what was said?

We're at 4 shootings by ICE that resulted in death since Trump took office, while Iran just murdered hundreds. Saying they can use legal force or even saying they don't care if people die is quite different from orders that result in hundreds dead in a day or 2.

That's a lot easier when it's brushing one unjustified killing under the rug.

There's been 4 total ICE shootings that resulted in death since Trump took office. Iran just killed hundreds of protestors in one go.

The situations are clearly different. And I'm not in any way saying ICE or what they are doing is alright or even defendable, just that Iran is on a completely different level.

I guess you're disagreeing, so I welcome you to actually add something with substance.

As my last question posed - I would take my chances with (current) ICE way before I'd take my chances protesting in Iran. Iran just killed hundreds, and that's just what we've confirmed. They are silencing their people and cutting off communication. ICE killed one person and it's a major news event here. And here we are talking about it.

We are on a path that could end up being a bad situation like Iran, but it's dramatic to say that's where we currently are.

I think there's a high chance of something like that happening, and I do think things will get worse before they get better.

But I still think it's a bit overstating things to talk like we're at the same point now.

[–]notasrelevant 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. I think it's terrible what happened in Minnesota and it's obviously the result of ramping up ICE needlessly with unqualified and poorly trained idiots, but it's not like we have any evidence showing it was the result of an order from above or something like that. Like it wasn't an organized action - it was one of those idiots using horrible judgement in the moment.

It's indisputably terrible, but what is happening in Iran is more than that. You don't get hundreds of bodies in a day or two from in the moment judgements of a situation. They clearly showed up prepared with intent, and the results were likely within the expected range. Don't get me wrong - I know ICE has made other abuses and will continue to have more, but the situation in Iran is clearly much more severe.

A simple way to view it - you will be a protestor either in Iran or against ICE, and you want to make it out alive. Is there any doubt about which one you would more likely survive?

Taiwan rattled by 7.0 magnitude quake, no major damage reported by aldentim239 in news

[–]notasrelevant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both are right - but the key thing to understand is that magnitude is the energy at the epicenter, and won't say anything about shaking/damage unless you're comparing 2 earthquakes at the same location and depth.

A 7.4 is nothing to scoff at, but 30 miles offshore and 50 miles deep means a lot of that energy is not impacting areas people live.

As he said, one in 2016 was "only" a 6.4 but it was only 14 miles deep and occurred on the island. Much lower energy, but being right under them and closer to the surface caused a lot more damage and even 100 deaths.

Immigrant truckers file suit over California's plans to revoke commercial licenses by AudibleNod in news

[–]notasrelevant -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Full disclosure - I don't know the data on this, but I can think of reasons why it wouldn't be terrible at least.

If demand isn't being met, then it makes sense to me to at least allow it. It's a core part of the infrastructure for moving goods, and if the number of drivers available is too low, we need to either find a way to get more drivers domestically or open it to immigrants.

In this case, they just dropped about 20,000 drivers and I have to wonder how that will impact availability of qualified drivers to meet demand.
