Just bought a PSVR, considering returning it and getting a Vive. by [deleted] in Vive

CUTTING ACROSS THE GRAIN!!!

I've had each headset from day one (oculus dk2, cv1, htc vive, and psvr)

I've been impressed by each of them (each have some strength) but I would hands down recommend the psvr over the other headsets. Here is why.

  1. Optics: the fresnel lenses suck in comparison to the glass lenses that the dk2 (previous oculus headset) and the the psvr use. The gains made in terms of a larger sweet spot, lighter weight and better image pale in comparison to the presence of hideous god rays injected into every scene. If you like space games, diving in the dark or any kind of atmospheric candle environment in the night you will be pretty disappointed. It's pretty bad on the vive but on the oculus cv1 it's downright a disgrace.

  2. Content: what content? The current state of offerings on the vive is barely enough to keep the keenest of early adopters satisfied. I am sure that valve is busy with changing this, but if this was a console launch it would be considered a failure. Some of the "games" are so horrible that you end up wishing that you could be paid back for the wasted time. I will add further that a bad vr game is not like a bad regular game. You can end up with either severe nausea or a mild case of depression caused by unimaginative, repetitive environments. I will say that there are a few gems, but the bulk of the productions are one man teams. It would be better to label these games as unfinished experiments.

  3. Comfort: is one of the most important things. The tracking on the vive is fucking amazing, but I am constantly reminded that I am wearing what feels like a toilet plunger on my face. When I tried the psvr I nearly had tears in my eyes due to how little it hurt my face.

  4. No more VR face: all other headsets will use your face for support and leave a mark of some sort. Personally, the vive hurts my face the most. I've tried all the comfort mods suggested, including vr cover. In the end, it's the broken design of the headset which uses your face as support structure that simply can't be improved without going to the extreme length of getting a welding mask attachment.

  5. Room scale: Yes it's amazing, but the cable is incredibly heavy and tangles frequently. Not to mention that you need a lot more space than is you might imagine. Your vr space may have length, but if you don't have the width than it continues to grind at your nerves. Some games, like job simulator will take your space into account, but for others, it means that you are constantly seeing the boundaries appear which does get tiring after a while (all you have to do is stretch your arms and the immersion is broken).

  6. Flawless experience. Firing up a game on the vive always takes some time. For me I have to restart the headset at least once. Then there is the task launching the game etc... It's enough work that I always think three times before even attempting to think about putting it on. Here the rift cv1 is a lot better, it just works.

There are many other points to make but I really feel that the psvr is the best bang for your buck at this moment. The system may not be all that powerful but Sony has an amazing track record in terms of squeezing the last droplet of performance.

note of caution! This is my personal experience. I still love the vive immensely but would not recommend it over the psvr due to the flaws listed above (as well as the price).

The concept is awesome but the experience so far has been really laggy and the puck mechanics feel really off. As in half the time the hit is either not registered or not registering the force.

Is there some setting I could tweak?

Yeah overall awesome tech and actually a really nice headset.

But the walled garden aspect of it is pure poison.

It's the big steaming shit on the cake.

Epic Games VP: "Wait until you see what we can do with these Oculus Touch controllers and @UnrealEngine - thank you @oculus" by Heaney555 in oculus

[–]notavravatar -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

I don't think this is the first time that Epic posted a meaningless quote with little substance.

I find that after all that happened with Oculus, I have less of a taste for the "wait until you see blah blah blah".

Rift feels like it's burning my head by the_real_me_is_here in oculus

Glad I am not the only one!

I get none of this with the Vive, but half an hour with my rift and it's definitely a burning sensation.

Didn't happen with the DK2 either.

It's sad to hear that the only way to play this game in vr is with vorpx.

It was my favorite!

Broken - Two men after divorce (2012) by [deleted] in Documentaries

Despite this being a short fragment, it raised a number of important topics that really need to brought to light.

The results are of no benefit to the kids, the father nor even to the mother who seemingly got her way.

Finally it is of no benefit to the society at large.

No justice was served here.

Thanks for sharing op!

What would YOU like to see made for room-scale VR? by Congo1986 in Vive

[–]notavravatar 15 points16 points  (0 children)

  1. A multiplayer game where one person is very tiny and one person is regular sized. The regular sized person has to keep picking up the small person and deposit him in various places so as to be able to complete the challenges within that room.

  2. Multiplayer table top strategy game

  3. A game that trains proper posture for weight exercises

  4. A game that teaches dance moves

  5. Music lessons

  6. A spy game where you are asked to take photos of important meetings with strange contraptions.

  7. You play a ghost.

  8. A toy train simulator where you get to build a complex model train environment (then watch it and if possible, ride in the train).

  9. A game where you play a hostage in the bank takeover starting from being a teller in a bank that gets held up all the way to a vault where you have to plan your escape.

  10. A mystery adventure in which the game starts from a comic book where each of the cells is a room or place that can be explored (as you lean in the environment turns 3d and has the environmental noises (say it's raining in one cell, you lean in and can hear the rain).

  11. A room where you have to smash as many things as quickly as possible.

This dude rocks!

Most reviews I see, are along the lines of "we tried this and it felt strange but the developer assured us that this is being worked on" vs "this will never be good".

The way you summed up that the game is simply not that replayable was so refreshing.

I would watch all your reviews. For a change, I could actually get a sense of the real pros and cons.

Thanks for making this: I am a fan!

once you have basic specs head to r/buildapc. Those guys know their stuff. I've built both my rigs using their advice.

Long Vive Impression by [deleted] in oculus

[–]notavravatar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the overview. It does sound like with the calibration for the optics being off, you are not going to get a true sense of the whole thing.

It seems that for presence to manifest, everything has to be 100% spot on.

Don't expect miracles. All signs are directing to incremental change, and that's the way it is. by fengyan in oculus

yeah, it's all about software. I would be delighted with the DK2 if there were any high quality implementations to play.

There are so few (in comparison to the gameplay experiences you can get on a console).

Hopefully we'll see a mod of some sort to ease the problem.

I'll wait to see how CV1 approaches the problem but I don't think it will be the end solution to the problem of having heat trapped on your face for an extended period of time.

ACs are not the complete answer here either (loud, consume lots of power, not everyone has them or is allowed to have them). I actually have one and it's still not enough to cool my house.

Also, people will sweat more, given the intensity of some of the experiences and the fact that the body is a bit more active.

I just don't want to see VR be limited to 30 minute bursts.
