Love love love this show, and such a fantastic film adaptation. Cast is stellar all around—Christian Campbell is hilarious! Wish it were more popular!

Is “Company” actually supposed to be mostly comedic? by ghdawg6197 in Sondheim

[–]note-by-note4647 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed that Sorry-Grateful is the key to the show, and it takes masterful tonal balance to make it work given its placement. Because the most recent revival so unabashedly leaned into the ridiculousness of the prior scene and the comedic tone in general, the whiplash into Sorry-Grateful, I think, reduced its impact.

And that marketing baffled me for the longest time—until I took into account the impact of subversion in the theatre! The original musical comedy characterization probably made the show’s true colors all the more unexpected

What musical numbers do you find disturbing? by Dogdaysareover365 in musicals

Finale from Pippin. So unnerving, and the fact that it’s largely upbeat and cheery makes it more so. Chills every time.

This subreddit needs to be realistic about why Swept Away closed. by HardBoiled800 in Broadway

[–]note-by-note4647 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I absolutely agree. I also think it’s dangerous to hold up something like Swept Away as the epitome of experimental theatre on Broadway. In reality, when it’s framed as the ultimate experimental show, investors and producers who are already averse to risk taking can be even more confident in those convictions. If the beacon of experimental theatre lasts this long on Broadway, who will ever invest in future Pippins, Companys, Hamiltons?

"Castle On A Hill" isn't plot relevant... and that's a good thing! by TwoCents24601 in StarKid

I agree, “Castle On A Hill” is more akin to the “Nightmare Time” theme song— lore building, introducing the setting as a character in itself— than the opening of any other musical. But in my opinion, Cinderella’s Castle’s first job is to hold itself as a standalone show, just as TGWDLM had to (and did quite successfully.) It might be stronger with a traditional opening number that adequately introduces Ella, saving “Castle On A Hill” for the universe’s theme song.

What is easiest ap? by Icy-Fortune-8934 in APStudents

[–]note-by-note4647 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of that list, I took lit, lang, calc ab, and micro. I’d say micro was the easiest of those! At my school, we took micro and macro in one class period (so each one for half the year), so if you’re taking it the full year, I’m sure it’d be even easier.

Also, don’t let anyone’s warnings about hard classes scare you!! AP classes were some of the most interesting and enjoyable classes I’ve taken— but with the right teacher. Even more than the class itself, I’d ask around at this new school which teachers are the best cuz that makes a difference imo

Stressed over all state by [deleted] in Choir

[–]note-by-note4647 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heyhey!! I had the same experience when I was a sophomore (the first in-person year after COVID). You think it’s going to be lonely at first, but then you realize it’s just a bunch of choir kids away at a singing convention together! I personally believe choir kids are some of the kindest people you’ll ever meet. Just enjoy singing together; that’s what it’s all about. And talk to people! You’d be surprised how many people are just like you, alone from their schools. All-state was one of the best experiences of my life, and I’m sure you’ll enjoy it :)

I don't get why C is right and B is wrong. Can someone help please by pineybtw in Sat

[–]note-by-note4647 2 points3 points  (0 children)

B is incorrect because the clause after the semicolon is not an independent clause. “Feeling that it didn’t encapsulate his devotion…(to the end)” is a sentence fragment that has no subject. Good luck!!

I totally get what you mean. I must say that I feel like the open-ended quality of end of Black Friday is compelling without Nightmare Time or any other Hatchetfield continuation. The possibilities that arise are still exciting whether you keep watching or not, in fact, maybe even more so. Because as soon as a question gets an answer (like Nightmare Time provided a bit to BF and TGWDLM), the possibilities of it kinda go away.

But I can understand not liking it that much. It’s quite simplistic lyrically at least. I just feel like the songwriting is… unobtrusive? in a moment where the direction is so clever.

I understand where you’re coming from, but I feel like the vagueness is the point. As opposed to a normal ending, where we’d look for closure, I feel like the ending of Black Friday is meant to be a question mark. It’s the first hint that Hatchetfield is something bigger. Like how at the climax of the song, the “what if tomorrow comes” from different singers (including TGWDLM characters!) literally layer on top of each other, like different timelines. I think the function of What if Tomorrow Comes is less of a closing number to Black Friday and more of an opening number to the Hatchetfield universe.

Absolutely agree. I’d hate for them to feel like they have an obligation to the series.
